I just heard that Pearl Harbor is coming out on a 4 disc DVD collection. I bought the first release and it is very annoying to see them come out with a new edition so soon after the last one was released. Not that I didn't know it would come out with another but it is annoying when it comes out so soon after the first. Pearl Harbor wasn't the greatest movie in the world but I bought it because of the documentary that came with the special feartures. I wanted to learn more about the bombing and I enjoyed it. I'm not a rich person so I can't really afford to buy it again and more then likely won't. Makes me wonder what I missing that they didn't show on my version...I mean 4 discs...there must be a lot on them. I don't know maybe it's just me but when they release these new editions so soon after the first release I get the feeling of really being ripped off. Just my opinion though.

This is usualy due to contractual issues. Studios set things like video release dates months in advance, if the SE is not ready by then, tough.
It can also be due to copyright issues, distribution rights (UK Schmoes take note the Life Of Brian SE is iminent, Python are waiting for their deal with Paramount to expire)censorship, or the slowness of the process of collecting the material.

I don't buy discs that I don't believe to be the final version, simple as that.

I got Pearl Harbor this past Christmas from my girlfriend's brother. I didn't really want it because I have known from day one that the 4 disc R-Rated Director's Cut was going to come out eventually and didn't want one copy that I wouldn't watch. Oh well, at least when I buy it tomorrow I will only actually be buying 1 movie since I didn't pay for it the first time...

This is why you should do your research before buying a movie. It may seem like a hassle, but its worth it. I held off buying the 2 disc pearl harbor because it was announced before that 2 disc set was released that a 4 disc set was on the horizon.

The so called "Doubled Dipped DVDs" happens all the time, just have to do some research to avoid all the pain

I don't know about where you live, but at my local Best Buy it's on sale for $29.99 plus a $5 rebate and it also says that inside the box, or at the store there will be a send away rebate for another $10 if you have proof of owning the 2-disc set, like the receipt and/or a UPC, so the grand total would be only $15. Not bad.

Well... it WAS announced even before the release of the first release that there was going to be a bigger edition.

I'll second that. It took a supreme act of self-control to prevent myself from buying Almost Famous when it first appeared on DVD knowing that a Special Edition was in the works.

I generally make it a point to not purchase a no-frills DVD until I'm absolutely sure it won't be later released with bells and whistles (which is why I haven't yet added Summer of Sam to my collection).

Except since I'm such a LOTR nut and I hate the 70s version, I'll buy bothe the 2-disc ed. and the Platinum Series Ed.
