I just saw the DC and I can give you indepth look at what was changed.
Before the attack:
Actually not much. The pacing is much better but that's it. All rumors about large sections of the romance being removed (As well as the Evelyn nude shot) are false.
The scene where the Betty talks about not likeing church has some new dialouge, and some pre-existing dialouge appears to be from diffrent takes.
The scene where Evelyn and Danny are swiming in the ocean has a couple of diffrent camera angles and has been shortend removing the conversation in Danny's convertible.
The "Spine-tingleing feeling" scene with Dan Ackroyd has been expanded to contain some extra dialouge about the Navy's concern over the missing Japanese fleet.
There is also some ethnic slurs during the Dorie Miller boxing match.
The Attack:
The DC's most drastic changes appear during the attack. The attack now runs longer and is much more violent and brutal.
Here's a list of the most notable changes.
1 All of the scenes of people being shot or blown up have been digitaly altered to appear far more gory. Now when people are blown out of sand bag baricades instead of whole bodies you see bloody limbs and torsos go flying. Also during the films many straffing scenes we now see huge chunks of meat and body parts being blown off the falling people. If you look closely during the "nurse staffing" scene, when Evelyn and Sandra are ducking down by the fountain, you can even see a man get cut in half by the 50mm rounds coming from the staffing Zeros.
2 There are several new scenes on Battleship Row where we see sailors on fire, getting bloodily shot, and brutally dismembered by by shrapnel. This includes a extreamly graphic shot of a severed head.
3 The scene with Miller and Capt. Bennion now includes a brutal shot of Bennion moaning and crying as he holds his intestines in his hands. We also see Miller try to put them back in his stomach.
4 The hospital scenes now include graphic shots of battlefield sugery and amputations, as well as close-up shots of severed limbs laying on the floor.
5 There dozens of new non-graphic shots through out the attack basicly making it longer and more complete. There are NO new scenes involving the USS Nevada or or the B-17's however.
Dolittle Raid:
The are only two real changes in this area apart from some extra dialouge and profanity.
1 The scene around the campfire with Rafe and Danny before they start training is completely removed.
2 A whole new scene with Dolittle adressing the troops on the ship the night before the mission has been added.
Final thoughts:
The film moves alot quicker now and is more suspenceful before the attack. The attack itself is 100% more intense and violent. (It richly deserves the R rating.) The Dolittle Raid is paced much better. Overall this is definately the superior version of the movie. But if you hated the movie becuse of the romance your opinion probably won't change much.
However if you are a fan of extras this the the must own DVD of the year. It has the most extensive extras ever produced on both the History and the film. The interactive Timeline on Disc 4 is amazing. It spans over 100 years and has everything you could ever want to know about Japanese/American relations before the war. Seriously you could write a paper on the info presented.
Plus the Production diary and "Deconstructing Destruction" peices on Disc 3 will provide the most comprehensive look of filmaking and fx creation ever put on a DVD.
The 3 documentaries on Disc 3 are also very good paticularly the one on Dolittle.
Comentaries over the film are also very good. I highly recomend the Michael Bay comentary as he adresses the charges of Historical inaccuracies and cheezyness of the romance. You might be surprised by some of his comments.
