View Full Version : Who likes Anime?

I'm just starting to get into it. I was introduced to Anime with Ghost in the Shell. Since then I've only seen a few (Akira, Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop. The Animatrix) but I love the genre.

My favorite is The Animatrix because it has so many different styles. Hopefully a sequel to it will be made in the future.

I only own one anime and that is Ninja Scroll.

*raises both hands and waves them*

For me, it's always nice to hear that someone has just got interested in anime. It's still very much a niche genre in North America. It's too bad, I wouldn't have to spend as much money as I do right now if it were slightly more popular.

I recommend you to visit the Studio Ghibli thread in the Foreign Movie Forum to have a further information about good animes, but what i can tell you for now is that i also love anime. My favorites are:

1. Grave of the Fireflies (9.5/10) - touching and realistic war movie, centered in a family of a Japanese soldier of the II WW.

2. My Neighbour Totoro (8.5/10) - an enchanting child's movie.

3. Princess Mononoke (8.5/10) - epic tale about war and our aggresiveness against nature, against what's nothing more than life itself.

4. Spirited Away (8.5/10) - weird but magical trip trhu a looking glass to a world of marvels.

5. Perfect Blue (8/10) - Lynch-esque psychological thriller centered in an actress which is stalked by a psycho.

I've never been a fan. I just can't get into them. I guess I watched too much Loony Tunes when I was little.

I like specific ones.

Pretty much all of the studio Ghibli flicks as well as:

Grave of the frieflies
Perfect Blue
Akira
The Venus Wars
Vampire Hunter D

Can't stand it. Worst genre ever.

I have recently been getting into anime. I loved Grave Of The Fireflies and Spirited Away. I also found Kiki's Delivery Service highly enjoyable. I was neutral on Princess Mononoke (need to see that one again, been a while) and I couldn't stand Perfect Blue. I know everyone loves this movie but I just found it unbearable to sit through. It got on every one of my nerves.

So yea, overall I consider myself a blossoming anime fan.

Yo.

My list of favs:

Cowboy Bebop (YEAH!!!)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (see my avatar)
Trigun
Akira
FLCL
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Animatrix

By the way, BakeTheCowMoo, what anime have you seen that drove you to that "conclusion"?

Well, I like the genre, but I haven't seen very many - only Spirited Away (8/10), The Animatrix (I gave each short film on it a different rating - I do plan to buy the DVD sometime, though), and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (also 8/10 - I own the DVD of this one).

Unless the first two Pokemon movies count, though (2/10 for the first, 4/10 for the second - the first is in my all-time shitlist, but the second is still pretty bad, too).

Although I do plan to check out Perfect Blue sometime, though.

I once was a big fan of anime, but I still have a few to see. From what I've seen I've either liked or loved.

My personal favorite being the magical and delightful My Neighbor Totoro. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, Grave of the Fireflies, Akira were all superb ones as well. Even though I don't LOVE Vampire Hunter D as much as I used to, I still enjoy it. I was even once a huge fan of Sailor Moon and now I still like it. Haven't seen Perfect Blue, Cowboy Behop and a few others but I would like to see them. I often go to my friends for advice on good animes since they're all bigger fans of them than me.

I'm pretty much a newbie to anime but i've always liked the genre ever since I was young.

The ones i've seen are

Vampire hunter D: bloodlust
Angel Sanctuary
Fake
Princess Mononoke
Some of the Cowboy Bebop episodes

I haven't seen too many, but what I've seen is very good.

Anime is fantastic! I absolutely love the genre.

Some of my favorites and of course recommended are...

Devil Man
Vampire Hunter D
Macross Plus (The Movie)
Fist of the North Star (The Movie)
Return of the Overfiend

Pretty much anything done by Manga is badass.

But in all seriousnesssioso, the majority of anime pretty much sucks. I especially hate the "humor" involved, which usually involves one person doing something mildly embarassing and the other person collapses on the floor because of it. Akira kicks major ass though, so does Ghost in the Shell...

Akira and Spirited Away are masterpieces. Akira is an amazing Sci-fi flick filled with amazing visuals of the future and Spirited Away is a great fantasy that just makes you feel better as a person. It's amazing how much better I felt about life and everything it offers after finishing that movie.

Ahh anime
ive always wanted to be involved in good animation so obviously, it brought me straight to it. At a young age i saw Akira and Ninja Scroll aswell as Ghost in the shell soon after, eventually i took a trip to the vid store to see what they had, and got out the first Urokokstin?...(cant remember the spelling or name mutch), but anyways it had heaps of sex n it and i was watching this by myself at only 8! Alot of Studio Ghibli's stuff when i was too young to remember so i look every now and then for them. N.G-Eva got me completely into the anime genre(s) and i usually buy a few a year and catch them on tv whenever they are now rarely shown. And i know that watching them in English is sacrelige to some ppl but im not gong to waste my time reading subtitles when im missing out on top of the line animation! the good thing is dvds have both languages so i can now see both! :D

I'm planning on checking out a few Anime series in the near future. I'm thinking about the Ninja Scroll series and another show called Berserk. I just bought the entire Cowboy Bebop and Trigun series on Ebay. Can anyone comment on any of these (i'm pretty up to speed on what Cowboy Bebop is about though) and perhaps recommend any other standout shows (i've heard good things about RahXephon). Any pointers appreciated.

Actually...some of it is I think. There's an attention to detail in the best that Anime has to offer that doesn't exist in even the very best western animation has to offer. Although I found Metropolis slightly disappointing (still an 8/10 though) the animation throughout was nothing short of breathtaking. Same goes for most of the stuff produced by Studio Ghibli. Just check out Spirited Away. Wow. There's a stunning amount of detail in almost every scene of that movie. Stuff going on that has nothing to do with the actual movie itself but helps to enrich the world within which the movie is set. Another movie that blew me away with the sheer beauty of it all was Voices Of A Distant Star. I'm not trying to denigrate western animation. There's some great stuff out there. It just seems that the majority of the stuff that comes out is either Disney or, worse, sub-Disney. Anime seems to provide far more fertile ground for the imagination.

The Trigun series is probably my favorite anime ever. Its about a guy with a 50 Billion dollar(something like that, Im recalling on memory.. REALLY expensive, ok?) bounty on his head because he supposedly destorys any town he comes in. So obviously, lots of people want to kill him. Lots of great action, good storyline, and its really funny to boot!

I love anime, though I don't watch it that much... very hard to get where I live. Among my favorite movies...

Vampire Hunter D (The cheesy 1980 version AND the cool, gothic 2001 sequel)
Battle Angel Alita
Akira (Still have no idea what it's about)
Devil Man (Cheesy, and with the GAYEST ending ever in part 2)
Ninja Scroll
Fist Of The North Star (Storywise it's utter shit, but you can't go wrong if you like over-the-top gore)

Of course, there are some crap animes out there as well:

X: The Movie (Makes absolutely no sense)
Urotsukidoji (Pointless, disgusting and a bad excuse for tentacle sex scenes)
Tekken (The worst video game adaptation ever. Street Fighter with Van Damme is an Oscar winner compared to this).

I used to be a MASSIVE fan of the genre but over the last few years I've somehow lost interest. I only own 2 animé on DVD, The Animatrix and Akira 2 Disc Ltd. Edition (R2), but I've been considering purchasing Ghost In The Shell and Violence Jack - The Complete Collection lately. I want to get back into it, I still have countless animé recorded on VHS, but I guess I don't have all the time in the world these days.

Me loves animation (heck, I have a Looney Tunes, Spumco and Pixar fetish), all kinds of animation, so yes, I like anime.

Granted, shit like Pokemon or Hamtoro gives me a headache, but the more higher demograph stuff like Cowboy Bebop or the films like Akira or Princess Mononoke can be brilliant. The animation style can be very lush too, even moreso than Disney's most expensive films.

So anime get's a thumb's up your as...I mean, http://www.joblo.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif.

I judge an anime movie or series just like a judge any movie or series; so in other words, I don't like it or dislike it simply because it's anime. Lots of my friends are die-hard anime lovers and have tried to hook me, but so far to no avail. The only anime I love is One Piece, a really funny, unique, great series that hasn't been released in the US yet, but you can get DVDs with english subtitles on eBay. It's fantastic stuff.

My favorite anime movie is Grave of the Fireflies (7.5/10).

JCPhoenix
01-05-2004, 10:05 PM
Grave of the Fireflies 10/10
Naruto (TV Series 9/10...the one mark off is for all the damn flashbacks)
My Neighbor Totoro 9/10
Laputa: Castle in the Sky 9/10
Spirited Away 8/10
City Hunter: Magnum of Love's Destination (called something like that) 8/10
Kiki's Delivery Service 8/10
Golden Boy (Miniseries 6 Eps) 8/10
Perfect Blue 8/10
Princess Mononoke 8/10
Macross Plus 8/10
The Animatrix (as a whole) 8/10
Ninja Scroll 8/10
Porco Russo 7/10
Nausicaa: Valley of the Winds 7/10
Sailormoon (TV Series 3/10...soooo repetitive. And i'm ashamed to admit, i've seen quite a few episodes. Never saying how many though.)

I believe those are most of the anime movies I've seen...only a handful (and i'm not including Pokemon movies etc...i have been unfortunate enough to witness one full Pokemon movie...shiver)

i only watch one anime show and i started cause my cousin was watching it one day so i decided to sit and start watching it and by the end i was like, next one, then the next one, etc etc...the show is of course NARUTO!!!

I've also seen parts of the Trigun series but for some reason i can't remember a single bit of it at all so i obviously can't rate it :p.

Heh. My Trigun and Cowboy Bebop DVD box sets arrived today. The Trigun episodes seem fine. Great picture quality, sounds fine and the subs make sense. The same cannot, however, be said for Cowboy Bebop. The picture quality and sound are fine but, fuck me, the subtitles must have been translated by a lobotomised monkey. I don't know if i'm going to be able to persevere to watch the damn thing. They are really that bad. Serves me right for being a tight wad. I've got my fingers crossed now that the Studio Ghibli box set i'm waiting for isn't going to suffer from the same problem. The Cowboy Bebop set only cost be £10.00. The Ghibli box set was £35.00.

The subtitles were likely translated from Japanese to Chinese, from Chinese to Korean, and then Korean to English...or some such line or cross-country translation. A lot of folks agree the English dubbing on Bebop is better anyhow.

This is why sometimes paying full retail price ISN'T such a bad thing... :D

Psychocandy, do you know of any films that are entirely like the animated segment in Kill Bill Vol. 1 (if you've seen it)? Or if you've seen the Pearl Jam video for Do The Evolution, are there are movies animated like that? I think Todd McFarlane did the video.

I0m not the biggest fan but I DID watch the entire "Blue Seed" and "BoogiePop Phantom" and utterly adored both. I have also been catching episodes of "Nightwalker" lately, I like that too.

Oh, and there was an unnimaginable wave in Mexico for "Dragon Ball Z/GT" when I was in fifth grade (and one for "Pokémon" when I was in seventh but I never really cared about it) and I did watch every episode.

Come to think about it...I DO like anime.

In reference to you interest in anime that looks and feels like the sequence in Kill Bill. Hmm. It was animated by Production IG who previously worked on Ghost In The Shell and Blood: The Last Vampire. Other movies/series you could check out are Golgo 13 and the Crying Freeman series. The latter starts off well though and proceeds to become less interesting as the series progresses. If you enjoyed the animation in the Do The Evolution video then you should check out the Spawn cartoon. Much, much better than the movie adaptation. Far closer to the comic both in terms of plot developments and the amount of violence on display (in fact the cartoon is more violent than the comic...go figure). I'll think about this some more. I can perhaps come up with some other suggestions.

i like anime for the art but anime's get on my nerves after a while for a stupid reason. the charecters constant perfect hair i mean they are supossed to be in a post apocolyptic world and the charecters look like they just got done doing there hair or just came back from the barber so there hair is always perfect or exotic it always gets to me even when i was enjoying kill bill all the charecters in orin-ishii's origin sequence had great hair. but i will get over it the art allways makes up for it in my book.

My favorite is The Animatrix because it has so many different styles.

First off, only one episode of Animatrix was anime. All the rest were just animation. Having a Japanese person on your crew doesn't mean your movie is instantly anime. Finding Nemo wasn't anime, and I guarantee there were some Japanese people somewhere in the studio. It's the same here. Most of the Animatrix was European work. That's why there are so many styles. Because most of it isn't anime.

Okay, back on topic. A few of my favs:
-Ninja Scroll (9/10)- Fun, engaging, fulfilling. Sweet.
-Akira(8/10)- If not for the psychobabble ending, would be 9.
-Trigun (9/10)- Minor subtractions for small things.
-Hellsing (10/10)- Just wow. The music, the action, the style. Amazing.

My shitlist:
-Project A-Ko (unratable)- The whole premise of the show is that people will do anything to see panties and T&A. The less sexy and the less fulfilling you make these shots, the more people will watch. Apparently, some people think that not getting what you want is a good reason to watch more.
-Anything too 70s- Speed Racer, origional Gundam series, etc. (unratable)- "Oh no you have won and now you have won and winning you have won and now winning is winning and you have won fair and now we have lost becasue you have won. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!HAHAHAAH!!!" Complete crap.
-Tenchi/Love Hina/etc (Romance comedies) (6/10 and lower)- 99.999% of these series is formulated. Affeminate guy, one girl beats him up randomly (beating up = hits him once), and no problem ever gets solved. Show me the first 60 seconds of an episode and I'll tell you exactly how it ends. Just take the main problem of the episode, come up with a compromised and half-ass solution, and have the appropriate character mess it up. For example, the episode starts off with everyone having no money for food. The episode will end with everyone starving while one character loses/runs off with the money they managed to earn during the episode. Every time. At the end of the series, the main character will find empowerment because of his achievements, despite losing so much (Not getting the girl, or not achieving KuBlu Super Hyper Action Stance, or not getting into college, or most of the time all of the above. If character achieves any of these things, they must lose even more of another.).

Will the movie hae theatrical release in Australia? I hope it does.

I'm new to whole amime thing saw my first a couple months ago there was a Hellsing marathon on WAM! after watching that I went right out and bought he Hellsing boxed set. I've also seen the Vampire Hunter D films and those kicked ass.

I've got Akira,Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bebop(Series&movie)saved on my netflix rental queue.

So yeah I'm pretty new to anime but I like what I've seen so far.

I just noticed about ten minutes ago whilst browsing through the listings on Sky in the UK that the Sci-Fi channel is running a couple of anime show back to back in the wee hours of the morning. It seems that they run an entire series then immediately replace it with a new one. Right now they are showing Neon Genesis Evangelion and Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. They finish up this Saturday then starting a 5am on Sunday morning they start running Gasaraki and Excel Saga. After they finish showing them...sometime in March they are showing Martian Successor Nadesico and starting Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 from scratch again. Then when those finish they are starting Neon Genesis Evangelion and Excel Saga again. I'm just getting back into anime in a big way after having taken a break for a number of years. It's great to see a UK channel programming some regular shows (even if they are on a pretty dumb time...5am...idiotic). Do any of these show come with a high recommendation from my anime loving fellow schmoes? Any info appreciated. (I already know that Neon Genesis Evangelion is a masterpiece).

After reading I tried a couple of animes and here's the result

Boogiepop Phantom - :o
Witch Hunter Robin - :(
Serial Experiments Lain - :o

and went back to the good old Gundam series

Gundam Wing - :)
GUNDAM SEED - :D

then watched some Macross: Do you remember love... and... strangly enough hated it
and realized the only good MAcross series/movie/ova is Macross Plus.

I also received my ESCAFLOWNE dvd set including the movie and all 26 COWBOY BEBOP episodes on dvd from china.

I'll start by saying that I've always disliked anime. Nothing really specific about it, it just leaves me kind of sour. And it's not that I'm uneducated on the topic... I went to the anime society at my local university for about three years straight just because it was free movies.
But all that aside, I was at my friends house the other day, and one of the "Fist of the North-Star" movies was on in the background. It was some of the most spectacular cinematography I had ever seen in my life.

It was really pretty good and much more heart felt then i expected. Its extremely bloody but i think they went to the extreme with it to show the brutality of killing.

One thing that shockd me most about is despite the packaging its really not an action movie but a love story and "got me" with its honesty. 8/10!

It took me a good 5 hours but I got through Virus Buster Serge.

It ain't the best animé, but it has got some pretty cool fight sequences in it, an interesting story (which gets really good come the final few episodes) and may have just got me back into animé.

Volume 1 (Eps 1-4) - Basically, we are introduced to Serge, STAND, their fight against viruses, just the basics that get a story going really.

Volume 2 (Eps 5-8) - More of the fight against the Virus threats, and we slowly start to find out bits of Serge's past.

Volume 3 (Eps 9-12) - There's a few surprises in store for Raven, Macus isn't too happy about STAND and Serge tries to find out more about his past whilst attempting to finish off the Virus threat once and for all.

8/10

Not bad for £20 :)

I got' a question:
After checking out End of Evangelion I got the Neon Genesis Evangelion series (from amazon . . . little did I know it was available at the local best buy). When it arrived I popped in the first disk, and after the opening credits the screen started to shake/jump every time a scene, angle, etc. changed . . . which obviously rendered the stuff pretty unwatchable.
I try the 2nd disc. Then the fifth.
They were all like that.

So since amazon doesn't have a refund policy that works if you open the thing I exchanged it for another, which is fine . . .
Usually.
I only have a PS2, and that acts as my DVD player. Is there any possible way that this series boxset doesn't work with playsation 2 (or has the glitches that I listed above)? Is there anyone who has NGE and can tell me that it works just fine on PS2?
Because the problem is I can't get my money back, so if when this new set arrives it STILL doesn't work I might just have to get a DVD player . . . which is fine, I suppose, but I'd still like to know if it works on a PS2.

I'm pretty sure all Region 1 copies of the Evangelion box set have the "Eva shake"...it's something of a trademark for the series, if an unintentional one. Something about it being transfered from a bad tape or something. Anyway, while at first it is glaring and somewhat annoying, by no means does it render the series "unwatchable". You get used to it after a few episodes. And the series itself is worth the technical flaws.

Well, says me, anyway. :)

. . . huh. Oh well, as long as I'll get used to it. Right off the bat I was intentionally paying close attention to see if it happened all the time, so I suppose if I relax and watch it'll just kind of blend into the shows.

I wouldn't call it crude, it just isn't as overly polished as most Disney stuff, so it almost comes off as that. Stuff like Akira definitely looks more polished.

I love anime
Some of my favorites are:

Vampire Princess Miyu (OVA) and The Regular Series - This probably tops my list. I love how Miyu hovers between being good and evil. She has her own ways and humans can never ever really hope to understand her completely. The show is all about mood, coupled with occasional action.

Noir - Good series. love how everyone has their own secrets and agendas.

Street Fighter 2 The Animated Series - What can I say? I've been a street fighter fan since I was a kid. But, I do have to say that even though the show is fun, I think they really ignore the overall might and coolness of Chun-Li (my favorite character).

Escaflowne The Series - Simply a fun show to watch.

Sailor Moon - I know its corny, and meant for little kids, but I can't help but like it. I love watching the mishaps of Serena and her struggle to be both a leader and true hero.

Stand-alones:

Blood The last Vampire
Read or Die
Armitage (both parts)
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Ninja Scroll

The whole thing plays like a videogame cutscene, but it's shot like a 2D-anime, so sometimes I forget they were 3D charatcers. I want to know, can anyone reccomend any good Fantasy anime? I'm not really looking for stuff like Evangelion right now. More, in the lines of Full Metal Alchemist. Some I can think of right now are Last Exile and Vision Of Escaflowne, which I'm planning to catch. Anyone knows of any other fantasy ones?

-Record Of Loddoss War. A classic of Fantasy anime. But it's more like "epic" fantasy (like the Lord of The Rings).

I finished the series a pretty long time ago and still have that first pic of Ed from the movie, the series finale leaves us with a pretty bad ass concept for a movie but then again, where did you read the movie's synopsis ???? Can u post it here plz ?

The last episodes, the ones with the Central City (depends in what version you saw the show) and it's mysterious underground kick major ass, especially since we first see it in the Japanese 4th opening scene.

Version of the show? There's an alternate ending?! PLEASE explain!

Anyway, I saw the japanese uncut series (no Cartoon Network) and yeah, the final episodes were fantastic. But there's plenty of information about the movie on the net. For a synopsis, check out that link Dead Halloween just posted. For a trailer, go here. (http://www.hagaren-movie.jp/index2.html). It's on the 10 o'clock button (it's flash).

What confuses me is that in the trailer Al is back in armor-form, but the synopsis says that it IS a sequel to the show. Not sure how that is.

Fist of the North Star (my favorite anime series EVER)
Ninja Scroll (classic)
Vampire Hunter D (I don't believe it's "terrible" the way many do, but it hasn't aged very well)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (my first anime :D )
Yu Yu Hakusho (great series, still trying to collect all of them)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (awesome giant robot show, pretty much made me quit watching Gundam altogether)
Trigun (anime+western = good times)
Ninku (only got a few episodes, but I like what I've got)
Wolf's Rain (more like I sort of like it and my g.f. owns them :p )
Soul Hunter (I despise "cute" animes, which my g.f. seems to own tons of)
Inuyasha (see above, I never understood this show or had any like for it)

Now, I'm going to come out and say it. I'm a huge and I mean HUGE DragonBall Z (I also like GT and the original) fan. Dead Halloween would know about the huge DBZ trend about 7 years ago in Mexico, I was in 5th grade, totally obsessed. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (blah, blah, blah, I don't give a damn how humans and robots are alike and not alike, just have some kickass action somewhat like the first movie)
Inuyasha (everytime I've tried to watch this show, a massive bloodlust has welled up in me and I have to turn to Postal 2 and GTA: San Andreas to stop from injuring someone.)
Dragonball (Z, GT, whatever. I just can't get along with this show. I payed attention to it and tried to watch it, but the thing is, I can't get along with the yelling for two minutes before they do something and how growing your hair out and it suddenly bleaching blonde is being any "tougher"?)

A few things that are against DBGT

1 it only lasted 50 some eps because of low ratings
2 GT was not made by the oringal creator(Akira Toriyama) of the DB/Z series Toei wanted to milk the cow some more. Akira had little to do with the GT series.

I did actualy like GT over regular Dragonball which always jusr seemed weird as hell.

My main gripe with GT was that the animation was pretty shity for most fo the series, even over the worst Z episodes. The villians(except for Omega Shenron) were damn lame, and i hate Goku being the only one ever doing any of the fighting/saving. It seemed like all the crap they went through with all the other characters in the Z saga went to hell once these guys took over.

..that being said, i did appriciate the MUCH shorter fights then the ones in Z. Sometimes that series wore me out waiting for a fight to end. (whenever they have a flashback in mid fight to an earlier episode of the same fight, u KNOW its gone on too long.):p

That was one long ass five minutes.

When i read the manga, i was surprised at how quick and brutal the fight read, and how much more intense it was without all the drawn out bullshit the TV show threw at the viewer to hang on to complete the season. :p

oringally Frieza was going to be the end of DBZ (so thats why i think frezias fight lasted so long) but the fans wanted more so cell and buu sagas were made. About the 5 minutes deal. It can be said that frieza either lied or was just plain wrong. I admit the longer DBZ went on the more boring it got its generally a good series. Also take into account that Early DBZ was highly edited for content by Funi and Saban. if you only watch Dub you are missing out on some of the story.

It's one of the most popular animes right now in Japan, followed by Gundam Seed Destiny.
I haven't watched it yet, but I heard Cartoon Network USA has the liscence of it.

Recently, I just finished watching the first Gundam Seed. It's the first Gundam series I've seen complete and I think it was good. It has some interesting character and a good plot. The animation in some episodes it's really bad, especially in fight scenes, it seems that they reuse many animations frames frecuently. The mecha (robots) was good, but previous Gundam series had better designs.

Anybody seen an anime movie called Mind Game? I just finish watching it and overall its pretty good but i have mixed feelings. The premise and visual styles are both great, but the pacing is quite exesive ( fast parts too fast and slow parts too slow ) not to mention a little bit absurd, but the ending and its sheer level of complexity ( along with the aformentioned frantic excessively fast pacing ) was something to behold, and the fact that this ends up being a simple, touching movie about life in the end really drives it home

8/10 ( although it might change since it was truly just too much to handle at times, i almost never say this but repeated viewings might help )

The onyl anime to really catch my eye was Cowboy Bebop, especially the movie. I think if it was live-action it would be insanely successful.

"Full Metal Alchemist - The Conqueror Of Shambala" was released in Japan last Saturday. Got great early word in reviews (eventhough most say you shouldn't see it if you haven't seen the series, which, well . . . duh) and escalated to #2 at the B.O. #1 being SW3, which is really popular in Japan.

I can't wait for it to be released here.

3 mini reviews for anime out this week-

Samuri Champloo volume 4- The series is picking up steam HEAVILY and could turn from pretty decent stuff to something on the level of Wolfs Rain and Beebop for me if it continues to pick up steam. Character pasts are revealed and some of the bet action in the series is displayed here.

Volume 4 score- 9/10 Series score so far as a whole- 8/10

Steamboy- while not as good as Akira...what is? This is a more light hearted fare but still worth picking up. An extremely solid adventure movie full of great character development and some truly fantastic art.

Movie score- 8/10

Ghost in the Shell volume 7- The last installemnt ends with a bang, and things did not end at all like i was expecting after the almost depressing end to the movie. Lots of twisty turns and i loved every minute of it. As a whole i wouldnt say the series stands amoung my favorites of all time(due to lack of character development compared to Trigun, Beebop, Wolfs Rian, FMA) but the over stroy arc with THE LAUGHING MAN comes to a great conclusion that left me fully satisfied and wanting even more from this series in the future.

Overall series review- 8/10

Just finished Full Metal Panic! and it's second season Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
http://animepro.gamigo.de/p4cms/media/Datenbank/Full-metal-panic-a/full_metal_panic-bild.jpg
Plot:
"Mithril" it's a secret Counter-terrorist organization who have technology more advanced than any country on the world. They discover that some terrorist are after a Japanese school girl called Kaname Chidori for the secrets that she carries. MITHRIL assigns Sagara Sousuke, the youngest member of the orginization who has growed up in the battlefied, to protect her without her knowledge. Sousuke enters her school as transfer student, but not knowing nothing about how to act as a normal student he always ends screwing up things and putting Chidori and himself in embarasing situations.

What I thought:
The two seasons are pretty different from each other. The first season it's most Action/comedy, while the second its more Comedy.
The first season it's pretty good in it's first half, but it gets a little boring at the second half when it gets more serious.
The second season called "Fumoffu" it's shorter (12 episodes). I laughed a lot with "Fumoffu", it centers more in Sagara and how he gets Chidori and her entire school in troubles. It somehow reminded me to the first seasons of Ranma 1/2.

Overall:
Full Metal Panic! - 7.5/10
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu - 9/10

The new anime channel kicks MAJOR ass. I almost faint. This is how it went.

They started transmission with "Hellsing", when it was over, "Up next: Wolf's Rain". I lose it, right? When WR is over, "Up next: Full Metal Alchemist."

Needless to say, I had to be rushed to the nearest hospital. When I came back, I watched the first episode of ".hack//SIGN" (which I loved), ".hack//Legend of Twilight" (which I liked) and an episode of "Di Gi Charat Nyo!" which was so inane it actually entertained me.

Oh, also, saw the first two episodes of FLCL. WOW, that's one wacky anime.

Found this while flipping through TIME:
Since the 1960s, kids of all nations have enjoyed the quests and antics of Astro Boy, Robotech and their TV kin. But in its feature-film form, anime (Japanese animation) boasts a graphic artistry as potent as Disney's or Pixar's--or Goya's or Bosch's. Here, some anime for the ages.

PERFECT BLUE SATOSHI KON, 1997

A cute 'n' sexy pop singer decides to become a movie actress, then realizes she is being stalked by a fan who loves her a leetle too much. An adult thriller inspired by the giallo suspensers of Italian director Dario Argento, Perfect Blue deftly translates the live-action shock style into lurid-luscious anime visuals while mulling the notion that celebrity is a stroke of good luck punishable by death. Have creepy fun with Perfect Blue; then move on to Kon's Millennium Actress, another, gentler mix of suspense and movie lore. It's an anime tribute to live-action Japanese films, from delicate family dramas to the Godzilla epics of a devastated Tokyo.

SPIRITED AWAY HAYAO MIYAZAKI, 2001

The most noted name name in anime, Miyazaki makes child-friendly films that bring kids into magic worlds where pigs (Porco Rosso) and witches (Kiki's Delivery Service) fly with equal ease. Spirited Away, Miyazaki's masterpiece, is set in a spectral bathhouse. Ghosts of every species set traps for plucky young Chihiro-- or help her step out of them. Here is a fantasy land as rich as Lewis Carroll's, a netherworld as poetic as Dante's, to transfix the child in every moviegoer.

BAREFOOT GEN MORI MASAKI,1983

The Japanese monster movies of the 1950s were one pop metaphor from the only people to have been the targets of an atom bomb. Barefoot Gen is another: a memoir (by writer-producer Keiji Nakazawa) of a boy's life in Hiroshima before and after the blast. Gen, on his way to school on Aug. 6, 1945, must become a man amid the city's charnel rubble. The stench of burning bodies will adhere to you; this is no movie for kids. It does have the awful poignancy of a national nightmare--and in cartoon form.

STEAMBOY KATSUHIRO OTOMO, 2004

A Victorian virus has recently infected two of the top anime-tors: Miyazaki set his latest feature, Howl's Moving Castle, in a fanciful antique England; Otomo retreated to 1860s London for the first anime feature he has directed since Akira. Steamboy, available in two cuts (get the 126-min. director's version), sets a complex spy plot chugging across its sooty landscapes, with villains pursuing the boy hero--in some great chase scenes--to harness a 19th century WMD. Only the lad's ingenuity can defeat them. That's the power of anime: it's a weapon of mass perception.

AKIRA KATSUHIRO OTOMO, 1988

Apocalypse, pow! The dystopic future (is there any other kind?) came to animation with Otomo's film version of his manga series--and, presto, haute anime proclaimed itself to the world. This psychedelic eye chart is set in 2019, the same year as Blade Runner, and paints its Neo-Tokyo with even denser splashes of noir on neon. The mix of outlaw attitude and brain-breaking speculation may convince you that the Wachowskis were channeling Akira when they wrote The Matrix. The special-edition DVD restores the original film in all its gaudio-visual splendor.

FLCL/Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri (2000) (OVA)

http://tienda.dreamers.com/imagenes/44568.jpg

"It takes an idiot to do cool things. That's why it's cool."

Plot:
While his brother is in America, young Naota spends some time with his brother's girlfriend, who doesn't stop teasing him. That's when an insane girl in a motoscooter kicks in and smashes Naota on the head. A three foot long bump appears later on, and the girl -who calls herself Haruko- stays in Naota's place as a maid. But then, an evil corporation's plan begins unfolding as a robot appears from the Naota's bump. Oh, that's right . . . and that's not the end of it.

My Thoughts:
If you're in the mood for girls in playboy playmate outfits airsurfing on guitars, a maid robot with a TV as a head kicking ass, a small robot dog that gets bigger as he eats cell phones, people getting cat ears or just utter insanity, then hop on the FLCL train.

This is probably the most insane anime I've ever seen (and probably the most insane anime ever), and even as I was forewarned about just how wacky it was, I was still surprised. I can't say I don't enjoy comedy anime. The little I've seen (Pita Ten, Di Gi Charat Nyo!) has really amuse me, but none of those have come anywhere near to being as insane or funny as FLCL is. The opening alone had me rolling on the floor with anime wackiness taken to the extremes mixed with top fucking notch animation and crazy character designs. I knew I was in for a crazy bloody ride.

FLCL is an anime experiment from the creators of everyone's favorite series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Can you mix a clever plot with bizzare comedy in only 6 very short episodes? Sounds difficult, I only expected this show to be a fun ride but nothing more. I didn't even really expect a plot, and I could have loved it if it had none! But FLCL decided to go and experiment. It worked wonders. The concept in FLCL isn't throroughly explored, since it has so little time, but the concept itself and to the extent that it is used is fantastic. You have a mistery on hands and the story does well when it develops. My big problem with the story is more of a personal thing, but it'll be addressed following.

The heart of FLCL (it does have a heart under the goofy exterior) relies mostly on the character interaction. Sure, none of these folks are particularily developed or realistic, but the way they relate to each other is where the hay's at. The relationship progression between Naota/Mamimi and Naota/Haruko is just fantastic. I loved how their relationship changes in such radical ways, but smoothly in the course of the short series. There is a heart warming moment in the final episode which I don't want to spoil . . . I'll just say it involved Naota crying. I didn't expect to "Aaaaww" at an anime series that suddenly mimics South Park (no, literally, what wiht that?) but I did. My problem was that I cared so much more about these characters interacting together, who cares in what way, than about the plot. So when the story suddenly went 'serious' (as serious as it got, which isn't much) I was bored.

The directing by Kazuya Tsurumaki (who directed the first part of "The End Of Evangelion" as well as some episodes of the series) was what won me over immediately. Not only is the animation some of the best I've ever EVER seen, I just loved how it was managed. This show oozes style! From the fantastic freeze-as-camera-pans-around in some scenes (loooove the kiss) to the absolutely mindblowing action sequences (Canti kicks so much fucking ass), it's all great. I was in awe and drooling. And what can I say by the soundtrack by "The Pillows"? Nothing except the fact that it fucking ROCKS. I'm not really into J-Pop (except some select few from shows) but these tracks were so fucking catchy and fit the images so well, I had no choice but to get the album, which I reeeeallly reccomend.

Another problem I had was the voice acting. Eventhough most actors got their parts nailed well enough in about one episode, I was really distracted by how underplayed some of the acting is. The character may be screaming and you'll only hear the voice talking normally. Thank god, this goes away soon enough but when it happened, it was pretty hard to look past.

Let me just emphasize on just how crazy the show is. Some parts have the show going 'manga' (you see manga panels and hear the voices) and is later addressed by the chracters as "too expensive and annoying for the cameramen.", at one point, the characters become South Park characters, people shoot people for no reason with odd unlethal weapons and that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you enjoy extreme wackiness in anime, this is your cake.

Overall Rating:
9/10. The flaws are not even real flaws, saying that the characters aren't really developed or that the plot isn't throroughly explored is almost unfair. This isn't the show you'll want to see if you want a thought provoking plot, this is the show you'll want to see if you like wild comedy and suggestive innuendo. It's a roller coaster you have to be ready for. It's just not for everyone.

Ok this may seems a little corny but I've been trying to remember the name of the anime that I use to watch when I was little and I was hoping that you guys could help me out. It was you typical girly anime like Sailor Moon. I remember that it was a group of girls (they might have been fairies or something like that), lead by the princess of the kingdom, that had to protect their kingdom against some evil force. Each girl had a power (i remember the princess had the power of the sun and the red head had the power of love) and a creature that shared their power. That all I can really remember beesides bits and pieces of episodes that would really be of much help. Thanks in advanced.

I have seen a lot of anime growing up because I spent my childhood in Japan. Some tv shows/movies that fall under that genre are some of my favorites (Cowboy Bebop rules all, a lot of Miyazaki's stuff) and some only tends to confuse me. (No offense to FLCL fans, but what the hell is this thing about?) With this in mind I rate anime like I do any other movie or tv show: how well the story is written, the connection i feel with the characters, and of course if it contains any random element that is so awesome it melts my face off. (Fight Scene, Car Chase, any scene containing some form of bad-assery.) In this sense, I'd consider myself just a movie a fan who happens to watch anime, not necessarily an anime fan.
