Yeah I saw this one on AMC. It was directed by Wes Craven and stars Bill Pullman. It's pretty interesting.

A tense voodoo flick with shades of Elm Street. One of Craven's better efforts, although I could just be saying that because it's one of his least talked about efforts.

A tense drama, definately shades of other Craven films but it is one of his best and most unsettling. Some scenes are not graphic but the idea is so well toyed with that it is just as if not more effective.

DUDE! putting it down in writing just makes me relive that poor man's pain. Easily one of the most tense scenes in any movie. "I wanna hear you scream!"
Right up there with Hellraiser 2 as one of the trippyest flicks ever.
Eyes without life...Sundered heads...Piles of carcasses...These are pleasing words to me...

A great movie that I almost like better than Nightmare 1 & 7. It's amazing to see that Wes could make such good movies when he's made such crap as well (I know some people really liked People Under the Stairs but I thought it was shit).

The Serpent and The Rainbow is not for the faint of heart. It's not an overly gory movie (it has it's moments though) but it's sheer brutality is unflinching. It's an absolutely outstanding movie from Wes Craven that proves his talent and what's become of it over the past few years. Very creepy stuff.

I thought the movie was pretty good. Having it based on a true story was cool too.
The film actually reminded me a little of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
It had its moments. Bill Pullman wasn't bad, & Paul Winfield is always worth watching.

Its an excellent flick, I think I would even say that its one of Wes Cravens best films. It shows the whole voodo culture from a very realistic point of view, and I really appreciated that about it.
Except for its special fx filled ending (wich I liked too!) the film looks and feels the way voodo really is. Its a scary film in a real sort of way, mainly because #1 its based on a real life story and #2 Craven had some voodo consultants wich helped make the whole thing more real.
I recommend it 100% for people who want to get a real look at
voodo.
Heres the cover of the Wade Davis book that the film is based on:

The Serpent And The Rainbow, is based on the book of the same name by Wade Davis. The film and based on a true story about Wade Davis, who in the film is called Dennis Alan, who is an anthropologist and botanical explorer. Dennis, goes to Haiti, to investigate folk ceremonies in the rituals of turning people into zombies using powders and rituals. The whole film is set in Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. along the way several people are after Dennis, to cover up what he has learned and adventure pursues. The film takes awhile to get into but is beautifully filmed in the Dominican Republic, and gets so unique and interesting at the ending that I turned out enjoying it and I'm sure people fascinated with this type of study will enjoy it too.Wes Craven, is good at directing bizarre and unique horror films like this and I look forward to his next film Alice, based on the adult video game where Alice, escapes from a mental clinic and kills her way through Wonderland. I hope that Alice, will be getting an R rating and not a PG-13 rating because when giving the right script and material Wes Craven, can turn it into a well made horror film.
