The movie is probably in the wrong genre, seeing is it I rented it on VHS in the Sci-Fi department. Buy, anyway I rented because I thought I had seen it one time when I was younger and sure enough I was right. But last night I'm watching this documentary called the Master's of Horror narrarated by Bruce Campbell and it showed alot of past horror films by Romero & Carpenters, and others. They show "They Live" and now I'm thinking, this was a horror film? Well anyway, I'll let you all draw your own conclusions and I hope you enjoyed the flick as much as I.

They Live isn't pure-bred horror, but it's horror enough to be mentioned in horror documentaries and discussed on horror discussion boards. I just bought the DVD for ten bucks...cool.

They Live is a great film. I'd consider sci-fi/horror kinda like how The Thing was. "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick some ass and I'm all outta bubble gum." Classic!

I bought the VHS two weeks ago and I was more than pleased to see it again.
The fight scene between the two heros is amazing and you think this will never stop.
Good movie from Carpenter, definitely my favorite director, Argento being my favorite in fact, well so Carpenter is close second.

I saw it loooong time ago and all I can remember is that it was a cool movie about alien invasion, that the aliens could only be seen with special sunglasses and that it had a really really long fight scene in it. That`s basically all I can remember. That and the fact that it was directed by Carpenter.

Speaking of the fight sequence, it is actually one of the fights featured on the Ultimate Fights DVD.

Just watched it again tonight and I have to ask, has anybody else noticed a certain similarity in the fight between Roddy Piper and Keith David and the Cripple Fight between Timmy and Jimmy from South Park?
"CRIPPLEFIGHT!!!"

They Live is a class movie - Roddy Piper's Mullet is supreme!

Piper's got more of that Canadian "Hockey Hair" than a Mullet.

Yeah, I read about Hypnowar: They Live 2 in an old issue of Fear from mid '89. That issue also mentioned Gremlins go to Las Vegas, Roger Rabbit 2, and Spaceballs 3: In Search of Spaceballs 2
Zing!

On a South Park behind the scenes on VH1 they explain how the used the 'They Live' fight sequence shot for shot for the 'cripple fight' on that episode. It's pretty damn sweet seeing these two kids whooping each other's ass - and a damn fine tribute by Parker and Stone! Well done!

I just watched "They Live" again the other day, it was on TBS or something. I hadn't seen it since the 80s.
I hated it when it first came out. John Carpenter had such a great reputation at the time, and you always hoped for the NEXT BIG THING when his name was attached to a project. "They Live" was a lot of stuff, but it sure wasn't the NEXT BIG THING.
Looking at it years later, though, I can appreciate it. Rowdy Roddy is hilarious as the lead--it's like the world's stupidest man found those sunglasses that are fooling the world. I mean, standing in the middle of a crowded store, saying "Ew, you're ugly when I put my sunglasses on" while noticing that half the crowd is alien...well that's pretty damn stupid.
Then he looked surprised when they started chasing him.
Classic.

This film kicks ass. So many cool one-liners from Roddy Piper not to mention the hilarious and crazy fight scene.
"I've come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and i'm all out of bubblegum."

Just bought and watched the DVD last night. I've been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD again forever. Very good movie with an excellent fight scene, some great one-liners, decent performance from Piper, and a pretty funny ending.

I really love this movie. Its funny, its paranoid, and its good chessy fun. Kind of like an 80s version of a Kafka movie. Not really horror movie though.
Buut what is up with that stupid ass fight scene. It went for like 20 freakin minutes. What the Hell is the point of that. I thought it would never stop.

I think the point of the fight scene was that there was no point to it. It was completely unnecessary, but I loved it nonetheless.

The fight scene helps make the movie even that much better. Sure it's pointless but it kicks so much ass. Hey I just realized I made a pun.... *sigh*

The fight wasn't supposed to be that long. Piper & David actually sparred during that sceen. Basically, they fought for real, only pulling their punches so they wouldn't seriously hurt each other.

I have a problem with this. I remember reading on Matt's webpage he saw science fiction as more of a setting than a straight forward "genre". I pretty much agree.
A movie set in the future with technology and aliens doesn't have to be science fiction. The Alien series, to me, was straight out horror. Aliens were the monsters this time, and damn freaky ones at time. Space was used instead of a campground or a house. I saw Virus as sci-fi/horror, the terminator is action/sci-fi/horror, the thing as HORROR, ect.
And WTF is Flatliners doing in sci-fi?????? Can someone please explain this?
I havent seen They live, but just ordered it, so will let you know what I think. Most likely it will fall under the same category

I've always wondered why this flick is called "They Live", when "They Live" sounds like the title that one would give a zombie flick or somethin'.
Anyone know or have some speculation as to the title?

They Live, is about Nada, who comes to town in search of a job. He gets a job at a construction site and goes down with other homeless people to an area where they are fed and sleeps with other homeless people on the street. Nada, witnesses people across the street in a church doing strange things so he walks in and finds a box of hidden sunglasses. Nada, talks one of the sunglasses and when he puts them on he sees the world in a whole new way. Billboards and signs each have hidden messages in them and when he looks at people some of them are aliens so he sets out to destroy them but first he has to convince others to help him to wipe this alien race out who appears to be most of the wealthy peoplke and leaders of the city. Many people think that the Nada, character inspired the video game character Duke Nukem, and there is a fight scene in the movie between Nada, and a man named Frank, which was supposed to last 20 seconds but instead lasted over 8 minutes making it the longest fight scene in film history. An intriguing idea and a entertaining film which is grade A, popcorn fun.
