View Full Version : Should James Bond Be Killed Off?

HM Murdock

I was watching Moonraker on Saturday and I was thinking if they will ever kill off James Bond. Should they? I think that the francise still has way more life in it yet but sometime in the future do you think it would be better to let the classic spy go and remain in cinema history forever (hopefully without crappy spinoffs like James Bond Jr. and Jinx). It would be a huge movie that saw the end of Bond. After all the series has to end sometime.

I'd like the series to end. I don't really care how. They're just tiresome.

they should bring back sean for one last fling at it,coming out of retirement and then kill him off,the franchise should have stopped when he did.

Remember that James Bond movie where he saves the world and bangs the hotty? You know the one with the gadgets.... I'm pretty sure he says Bond...James Bond, in the movie.

Since the latest Bond flick made an enourmous amount of money, you won't see the death of the franchise in the near future. It's been going on for 40 years, so they are not gonna kill a milking cow.

I would like to see grittier Bond movies. The first 20 minutes of Die Another Day rocked, but after that it went through all the familiar cliches.

Agreed. Bond should go on to do a hundred more movies, and they should all keep the same recipe as far as I'm concerned. I love 'em.

I think Sean played the best Bond by far. The casting agents need to find someone who can really kick ass but still look good for the ladies. Does anyone have any thoughts who would make a great new Bond? I entertain this thought every time I watch a Bond flick.

My top pick: Jude Law (dashing, witty, gorgeous)
Second Pick: Russell Crowe (tough guy, smart, ass kicker, handsome when he wants to be)

If they do end they should copy that SNL skit where James has like 150 sexually transmitted disease some of which are found only in marine creatures. :D

They could always kill him off but have a clone of him return like what they did in the ALIEN series.

Although after DIE ANOTHER DAY I don't really care.

The whole STD joke reminds me of a skit on Saturday Night Live where a doctor told James Bond that he had an STD so he had to call every woman he slept with to tell them. Of course there were about 1773 girls to call. I remember one call:

James: Hello Octopussy? How's it been? Fine eh? Me too. Well I had to tell you that I have an STD. Hello? Hello?

yes it would be tragedic(sp??) but at the same time it would be so unique to kill such a mega hero that fans would appreciate it (as long as the death was something worth noting)

I THOUGHT that he lived. Haven't read it though. Isn't the series still ongoing?

He shouldn't be killed off, but they should return him to his extremely un-PC roots (which I thought they would do after TWINE, which looked like he was "getting over" his emotions, but they blew that one I guess).

I don't think they should get rid of Bond, but they really need to have a new villain that isn't some European or closeby conglomerate. I'd pay good money to see an Australian Bond Villain

I'd pay to see Grebdron be the next James Bond villain. Just look at him:

What they should get rid of is the fake CGI special effects, or put a little more into them. Some of Die Another Day looked cheesey.

Seriously though, you DO have the look of a lot of the Bond villains - the 'classic' 60s villains especially.

I'd like to see Sean Connery as a Bond villain. He stated publicly he'd be willing to do it for the right price.

He literally looks like my grandfather in that pic, same general pose, same general clothes, and same general look on his face.

You aged fast, Greb. Works well as an older villian with a lot of goons.

No, my grandfather was and never will be part of the mob, so don't send the police the my address via IP to be forwarded to him to question him.

I can see him dying, or him quitting his agent job sometime soon, but as for now he still brings in the big bucks. As for his last two movies, they were just average movies, and crap for Bond ones.

I aggree with the quiting thing. I can imagine in years to come (many of them), Sean will return to the role and play Bond post retirement only to come out of it to save the world one last time. That would be a nice end.

But I do think that one day, they should call it a day on Bond. We're almost 20+ with his movies and he hasn't aged a bit although the eras he is in have. It is in risk of just getting silly. But don't get me wrong, Bond has still a hell of a lot of fight in him.

The only way to make "The James Bond Saga" good again is to have QT make "Casino Royale" with Daniel-Day Lewis as James Bond.

I think, if the films are all like Die Another Day, it's something to consider. The class and excitement of the 60s Bond films seemed to leave along with the 60s.

Consider: Last great Bond movie made in 1969 (On Her Majesty's Secret Service, if you were wondering).

HedwigX

If Bond ever does get killed off, it won't be by a villain.

I reckon all those Martinis will come back to haunt his liver. :D

Seriously though, I'd say the Bond franchise has at least another ten films in it. Unless of course they bring in Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. *Involuntary shudder*

Connery & Moore were both prime candidates for contracting sexually transmitted diseases but Pierce Brosnan is so namby pamby & politically correct I'm surprised he didn't insist on putting on a rubber during the explicit DAD love scene with Halle Skanky.

In light of Sony's recent acquistion of all MGM films, and the fact that the only films that will bear the MGM logo in the future will be James Bond films, I think the odds of him getting killed off just decreased.

Sony has enough money to keep making the expensive films and risking their success (not much of a risk), and Bond is now the only thing keeping MGM alive.

After the period of change the Bond series is in now, I think we'll go back to seeing a new Bond every two years.

Though I don't think that they should kill him off, I do think that they should try something different with the series. What exactly was wrong with Die Another Day (not to say it was great, but it wasn't terrible in my book)?

bob
02-01-2005, 06:39 PM
I was thinking today about how the series might get a little juice back into it, and I came up with this:

Why not set the new Bond films in the 60s again? Restore that kind of hip class the early ones had, and have a field day in the retro feel. I think that's a better idea than the increased modernization of the last few...

Ted Pikul
02-01-2005, 06:47 PM
Yeah, & bring back 60's stalwarts Ken Adam & John Barry to add some much needed class.

HM Murdock
02-08-2005, 08:00 AM
I aggree that Bond has lost a bit of class over the decades. Hopefully the 60s throwback phase we're going through at the moment (the music industry in the UK anyway) will bring some classic Bond action back for the next movie. The last few movies were way to science fiction and played too much on the conventions, I hated Halle Berry's "imperssionation" of Ursla Andress from Dr. No. She's no way near the same league.

As for Bond being killed off, I don't supose that will end the franchise. Somewhere down the road some movie producer will somehow finance some tripe along the lines on James Bond Jr. the Movie! It has been a cartoon, nothing stopping it being a movie and let's face it, there are plenty of potential mothers of Bond's son. It could work but I really don't want it to be tried in the first place.

wheresdonnie?
02-24-2005, 03:16 PM
I think that they should have a really great final Bond, and either kill him or have him retire. He's drifted so far into camp smugness that they just need to finish the series.

Danny L
02-24-2005, 04:08 PM
Let's have him killed. I would be great if Blofelds kid came in a chopper and dropped Bond in the same chimney as Daddy B went down in.

Yes, the original scene was a classic. "Mr. Bond, Plllleeasse". Bring back Moore.
