This just got released on DVD this week.
I was thinking about buying it on DVD.
Is this movie any good and do you think it is worth buying?
Let me know your opinions on this movie.
Thanks.

I thought it was shit, but I went into it with the wrong expectations. I wasn't expecting a comedy. Just be aware that it's not purely horror.

Wes Craven did good on this one, I just watched it today for the first time and enjoyed it. It had some identity issues, with a couple of scenes being extremely disturbing, and others just plain laughable, but it was entertaining, and decently suspensful. The script is pretty funny, with a couple of one liners that had me laugh out loud.

"Your father's one bad mother... actually your mother's one bad mother too."

I'd check it out before buying, it's a love or hate it deal.

I saw this movie on TV like 8 or so years ago. I was much younger so I was pretty creeped out by it.

If I remember right it was a relatively good movie.

I personally like this movie a lot, its friggin halarious with a cool plot. they coulda done more with the actual people under the stairs but it was still cool. The fathers leather outfit was sweet, i think the only thing i hated was how he kept using a shot-gun, pointless

Yeah, I keep seeing him in a pizza commercial. The People Under the Stairs definitely catapulted its main/supporting players to stardom.

All jesting aside, this is a cool flick with a sagging third act. It pulled too many punches, but it's still highly entertaining.

I'd say it is totally worth buying. Wes did a great job on this movie.

I just loved how incredibly random this movie was. I was pretty sure that everyone got high and just started spouting out ideas.

I mean look at all the wild things in it:

-people in the walls
-disfigured weirdos/not really zombies
-houses which are seemingly small but apparently hide thousands of feet of secret passages

and how could one forget

-kinky S&M

I suggest watching before buying. As you can tell from this thread it's a love/hate movie.

I LOVED it! Good story, over the top acting, thick with weirdness.

It honestly is a fun beer-drinking hanging out movie

This movie was crapshit. It just bored me, and I didn't like it. Go watch Deadly Friend or a few reruns of Muppet Babies insted of this crapshit.

I liked it when i was a shorty. Now, well, the end just ruins it for me. Way too silly and funny. But it was a damn good story/idea though. i guess their is worse, but it seems any movie with the Wes name tag on it is either damn good, or just crap. But this one is just on the line.

When I was a kid, anything with Wes Craven's name slapped on it was hugely exciting for me.

I doubt I would enjoy this movie too much nowadays, but considering how cheap it is on DVD I may go ahead and give it another shot.

I loved this movie when I was younger, haven't seen it in a few years.

I'll probably try to grab it later today.

And Everett McGill was fucking awesome in it.

The first time I checked out this "urban fairytale" was back in the summer of '92. It was a lonesome, stormy evening when I popped this VHS tape in the ol' VCR. Of course, sleeping at my feet on the couch, was my 10 week old Rottweiler puppy (named Misery - from the Stephen King film).

The mood of the evening, combined with the fact the "hell-hound" of the film was a Rott, led me to develop a certain appreciation for this film. If I ever see this at Best Buy on DVD I will definetely be picking it up.

BTW... R.I.P. Mis... 1992-2002.

Damn... time sure flies... doesn't it?

I'll give this thread a bump.

I used to love this movie when I was younger, and it used to scare me. I recently watched it a few nights ago and I thought it was very disapointing. I was expecting something dark and disturbing and it was more of a comedy. Roach got on my nerves a few times. It also got really boring at points. I thought Ving Rhames and the kid were kind of funny, but color me underwhelmed. 4.5/10

While not a great movie, it is still entertaining. I think they over did the comedy a little bit. Overall 7/10.

Even though it was mildly entertaining, I feel the poster was misleading. It seemed at the time it was being marketed as another Wes Craven Horror film! Not one of his better films, despite some great performances by Everett McGill and Ving Rhames. I guess TPUTS is a film that will always be met with mixed feelings...yet as long as some people find it entertaining, I dont see anything wrong with that!

I really enjoyed it. True, it was a bit silly, but there was a lot of dark stuff going on as well (the girl in the scalding water?).

It's just a lot of fun. Some great jumps and a man in a gimp outfit shooting the place up:D

It has - I got it years ago. Perhaps this is a new version with some extra features, as the one I've got is pretty bare bones.

The film is worth is just for seeing Everett McGill dressed in a gimp suit running daft about the house with a shotgun.

Goofy fun with a few decent, creepy moments sprinkled throughout. It was a bit unbalanced since it could never decide what side it wanted to fight on, comedy or horror, but as a whole, it's an entertaining and very weird viewing. Plus it has King Ving. And that always works in a film's favor.

7/10

The movie was creepy and entertaining. The only really creepy part was when the crazy bitch yelled at her stolen daughter, Alice with that knife. EEKKKK! That was some creepy stuff!

Definitely demented. Not a blockbuster or anything that stands out to me, but certainly worth a watch

Just watched this one in it's entirety for the first time. Better than I was expecting but I was still a little underwhelmed.

I liked Fool, Leroy, Alice, and even Roach a little. The fathers wacky S and M rampage outfit was a nice touch. Overall I feel the film could have been better if they played it a little more as a straight horror film. The scene with the scalding bath water sticks out. If they had done more stuff like that I would have rated it higher.

One thing really annoyed me though. How many scenes did we need with the father pointing the gun at Fool only to have something happen just in the nick of time for him to get away. Seemed like that scenario occured at least half a dozen times. Way overused.

As it is I probably rate the film a 7/10.
By the way, I kept thinking to myself how familiar Fool looked and after looking him up I found out he was one of the kids from The Sandlot. One of my favorites from my younger years.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I just looked up on boxofficemojo, and I can't believe this movie was #1 opening weekend, I didn't think it was that big of a movie, granted I was about 5 or so when it came out. I haven't seen it since then either, but remember not digging it too much. Have to re-watch it.

According to IMDB the film opened with $5 million and ended up grossing about $24 million total. That is pretty amazing. Not that they were spectacular numbers or anything but just the fact that it had such longevity after opening with such abysmal numbers. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I agree. I bought the two pack dvd with PUtS and Shocker on sale for $9.99. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to pay $20 for either of them but five bucks a piece definitely seems fair. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.
