We just watched Singin' In the Rain in my film class, and part of our journal is to cast it with modern actors and replace "Singin' In the Rain" with a modern song. I was wondering if you guys could throw out some ideas for me...
this is what I have so far:
Don: Ewan McGregor?
Cosmo:
Kathy:
Leena:
That's all I've got...I don't know if I want to go with people I know can sing and dance or go with just anybody. I have to think about the song some more too.
Thanks.

LOL! My professor told me that the only actor that I couldn't use was Richard Gere. I also had thought of Nicole Kidman but wasn't sure. I'll probably end up using her though.

Just out of curiosity, why not? Does he have a problem with him or something?

I think because of Chicago, Gere would be too obvious of a choice. Although, in a remake of rain Gere would be the ideal choice for Don. After all, Gere even kind of looks like Gene Kelly.

Not just because of Chicago, he just doesn't like him at all I think.

I think Ewan McGregor would be perfect for Don. Maybe Renee Zellweger for Lina Lamont?

This reminds me of the time I took an Art of Film class.
The teacher had three hats: the first was a film genre (action, drama, comedy, etc..), the second had names of actors, and the third had a fairy tale.
We all drew from each hat. My partner and I ended up with Action, Orson Welles/Victoria Jackson, Hansel and Gretel.
We had to make a short story that was an action-based Hansel and Gretel fairy tale starring Orson Welles and Victoria Jackson.
We decided to write the first 15 minutes of our take on Hansel and Gretel in iambic pentameter. Hansel and Gretel were a cross-dressing brother and sister who spoke like a Shakespearian play. It started out with them skipping a lullaby holding hands in the forest, and all the animals come out to peek at the beautiful singing. You don't see their faces yet, but they stop singing and look at all the cute little animals that wanted to hear more of their lullaby. Just like a Disney cartoon!
Then, Gretel's hand comes out, and after a brief pause, a gunshot cracks the silence and blows the head off of a squirrel. Then, the theme song to SHAFT plays as Hansel (Orson Welles in goldilocks) and gretel (Victoria Jackson with a butch-like hairdo) proceed to shoot all the animals in the forest. This is the credit sequence. We pause at their gritted teeth and gun-toting frenzy as the names appear onscreen, insterspersed with many shots of animals being blown away...
They go home to their trailer, only to find their abusive father (Gene Hackman) watching TV and drinking, as usual. After some poetic argument, father hits Gretel, and that's the last straw. They run off into the woods and abandon their dad in anger.
Meanwhile, father makes a soliloquy about his remorse for being a bad father, and prays to God that they will come home again.
It was funny because it was in iambic pentameter. It took a long time doing that. But it was worth it!
OK, that's kind of a long story, but tihs thread made me think of that fun project.
Who would I cast in a modern-day SINGIN IN THE RAIN? I would have
Don: Jim Carrey (He can sing and dance, yes he can!)
Kathy: Samantha Morton
Cosmo: Rupert Everett
Leena: Joey Lauren Adams

He is somebody that I never would have thought of but I think he really could work.
