With few exceptions, I'm not really into theological horror. Stigmata didn't enthuse me. It shouldn't have tried so hard to pacify the MTV crowd. You can tell that there’s substance trying to peek through, but it places too much emphasis on the pretty wrapping paper.

Meh, I thought it was a piss-poor rip-off of The Exorcist.

I thought it was excellent. I haven't seen it for ever though. I bought the DVD, which is great BTW, but still haven't watched it :/ Anyway, I am a fan of Byrne and Arquette and they rocked in their roles. The idea was pretty original as a religious horror, and it had elements that could attract mainstream, non-horror fans too, but they didn't really skimp on anything at the same time.

rip off of exorcist hmmm...nope dont think so exorcist a girl gets possessed and in stigmata a girl suffers from stigmata...very different just because its a religious horror movie doesnt mean its a ripp off of exorcist.....

Ummm...I seem to remember that during the film she starts to speak and write in a long-dead language that she could have never possibly known about...Sounds like a possesion to me!

yep that is true ....but its not based on her being possessed its based on her suffering stigmata...so what every movie that contains someone being possessed is a rip off of exorcist ??...c'mon there two completly different movies have nothing in alike ...

Correct me if I'm wrong as it's been such a long time since I saw this, but didn't they try to perform an EXORCISM on her??

yes there is an exorcism father kiernan comes and finds out that the person who had possessed her body was father almeida...but u see the point of the movie wasnt her being possessed it was her receiving this cross from her mom from south america and thats what made her suffer stigmata..she got possessed because father almeida wanted to get his word out ....u hate this movie dont u lol

WTF!?
Just because a movie deals with possession doesn't mean it's ripping off the exorcist.
Because a movie deals with the antichrist doesn't mean it's ripping off the omen.
These are things that are already out there - before these big hits were made. People ARE allowed to have different takes on the subject and make their own movies about them without being called a "rip-off".
I see no similarity to the exorcist in this film. Different horror style, different point...well, damn, a lot of differences. :D

I'd have to agree with countchocula. I'm not a big fan of this movie. As countchocula stated it had way too much pretty wrapping paper and I'm sure it pleased the MTV crowd.
I do get into the occasional theological horror film but for some reason couldn't get drawn into this one, I kept asking the question, "Is this over yet?" I'm sure if I watched this again I could pin point exatly what it was I didn't like but in all honesty I'm not the type to sit down and watch a movie I don't get into the first time around.

the score was also stellar. billy corgan (smashing pumpkins, zwan) has co-writing credit, and it's no shock. that man could not write a bad song if his life depended on it.

Not a bad movie, but I felt it dragged in places and I much more preferred the alternative ending on the DVD than I did the theatrical ending.

The only alternative I can find on my DVD is the alternate suicide opening (this isnt a spoiler, thats the name of the extra, I havent seen it). How do I find this ending?

IMo this movie is simply weak. I like religious horror, but it took a lot of effort to sit through this one

Just curious Wicked, but why do you think it was weak? Did you find it too implausable, overdramatic, underdramatic? BTW The Omen is a favorite of mine as well.

Count me in with the crowd who deems it weak. When I saw the preview for it years ago I thought it looked pretty solid but after watching it yesterday it didn't live up to expectations. Patricia Arquette falling for the ruggedly handsome priest was pretty blah. I hated the techno soundtrack. It moved very leisurely too. If I want to see Patricia Arquette in a horror film I think you guys can probably guess which one I will be sticking with. There were also a couple of scenes where she was trying to display anger that I don't think worked out well. She's not good at shouting things out I guess. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. All I remember was being BORED!! I found what I saw of The Omen and The Exorcist to be very boring too.
I'll stick with Arnold and End of Days.

A very uneven movie. I really liked the story. I thought it was very interesting. And Gabriel Byrne was good, as usual. I wish I could say the same for Patricia Arquette. I usually like her but here her performance was all over the place. The stigmata scenes themselves were directed and edited in such infuriatingly annoying way. Overall the movie was a bit of a disappointment.

I liked stigmata, and with the whole exorcist rip-off ordeal I think that the exorcist was such a popular and loved film that any film with a nearly similiar premise is bound to be deemed a rip-off.For instance when Deep Blue Sea came out I'm sure everyone said it was mooching off of Jaw's success, which I'm sure a lot of films have ripped off both the exorcist and Jaws,I also think Stigmata is not one of those films.
