I saw this british crime/drama/thriller about 10 years ago. I recall that it was from the early 80's, but I'm not 100% sure. It's a very realistic, gritty movie.
The lead is a middle-aged man who tends to get fooled by everyone. He is a very nice and kind person, and other people use him to their advantage. The guy is good at building robotics, so some criminals contact him to help them in robbery. The plan is this:
The lead builds a very small, remote controlled robot with tires. This robot is secretly put into a vault which has money/gold/whatever.
During the night the little robot crawls from it's hiding place and pushes up some sort of flag so that the movement cencors notice the robot and the alarm goes off. After that the tiny robot puts the "flag" away again and goes back to it's hiding place.
When the guards enter the vault, they don't find anyone there. The robot is too small to notice. And once the guards have left, the robot does the same thing all over again.
After 3-4 false alarms the guards simply think that the alarms are broken and they decide not to come back to the vault anymore before the alarms are repaired.
This allows the criminals to break the wall and enter the vault, not needing to worry about the alarms.
Along with the robbery there is a subplot about a small boy. The lead hooks up with the orphan boy and takes care of him. In the end the criminals try to kill the lead, but he kills them by blowing up a van.
After that he runs off from the country with the money and the boy. I think the last shot was of them sitting together in an airplane.
I have no idea what this movie is, but I remember that I absolutely LOVED it. It might be a TV movie, since it was rather low budget.
Do you know what flick is this?
