Is it his flare for dialogue? His cool characters? His amazing ability to cast his movies?

I think he knows how real people talk, or how they would, were they smart enough, and he's an ultimate cinephile, one of those filmmakers who loves every aspect and every nuance of making movies, and he won't quit until he's made it to his satisfaction.
True Romance, ***
Reservoir Dogs, **1/2
Pulp Fiction, ****
Natural Born Killers, ****
Kill Bill: Volume 1, ****
Jackie Brown, ****
From Dusk Til Dawn, *1/2

Like most greats, pinpointing what defines Tarantino's talent is a futile exercise.
He is, after all, probably one of the most derivative directors in movie history. There is virtually nothing in Kill Bill we haven't seen in dozens of other films. And his films are, shall we say, consistent in the types of stories he chooses to tell.
But his films are awesome. And I mean tremendous. How often does a low-budget gangster film filled with B-movie actors change the way films are made? Pulp Fiction had an unprecedent cultural effect. It marked a titanic shift within the movie industry all the way from the top movie executives down to the beginning film students.
So I don't know. And I'm not sure anyone does, including Tarantino.

What sets Tarentino apart from other writer/directors is that his world is entirely pop culture. Which travels well across countries and borders. The use of pop music in his films, it's not a riff but the entire song for a sequence.
The comparison of Madonna songs as conversation at the begining of RESERVOIR DOGS. Which itself is a remake of a (I think) of some obscure Hong Kong flick.
The appearance of Elvis, as the angle of death in TRUE ROMANCE.
When Tarentino characters travel the world, they don't compare cultures or differences, but they talk about Macdonald's. "Le Royal" from PULP FICTION.

True Romance (haven't seen...I will, don't worry)
Reservoir Dogs (9/10)
Pulp Fiction (9/10)
Natural Born Killers (7/10)
Jackie Brown (7/10)
Kill Bill Vol. 1 (10/10)
Four Rooms (haven't seen)
From Dusk Till Dawn (haven't seen).
I think what sets him apart is just how much be loves movies and how that love shines through in every film he does, whether it's a gritty crime flick or a fun throw-back to the exploitation flicks of the 1970s.

I don't really know what sets him apart...Maybe its the fact that he can take any already used idea and somehow make it into his own like he was the man who created damn thing....He just has that kinda skill....He's also one of those people that you either love or hate which I can dig cause he does what he wants and doesn't try to please everyone just himself....Dig it

I truly admire the complete (or near complete) control he has over his works. Ultimately, he is the fanboy in all of us, but he gets to make movies because it's fun, cool, and what many of us want to do. He has an incredible talent when it comes to dialogue, soundtracks, and casting. I mean, seriously, not many people would've casted a 70's blaxploitation phenomenon as a main character to a modern film. Ok, ok, so the movie in sorda inspired by blaxploitation films, but not many people would've done that in modern cinema. These are just a few examples I can think of. But I can't help but admire the dude.

He has the unique ability to lift entire scenes from other movies, but make it so that we're fooled into believing he came up with it originally

Its the fact that he writes real characters. The talk, walk and act like people really do in real life. No stiffness or bad acting to be found. There is a true sense that he loves his craft to no end, like he was born to do it.
That and hes a perfectionist nut job, god bless him.:D

A fanboy knows what a fanboy wants, which is why his movies work. Take Pulp Fiction for example. In the pawn shop, Willis is looking for a weapon for revenge. Goes to the hammer (ehh...could do damage) then the bat (a bit better) finds the chainsaw (now we're getting somewhere) but looks up and sees.... a katana. So perfect, it could not have been done better.
Its too bad QT isn't the greatest of actors though  .

Aside from the films themselves, looking at him as an individual filmmaker, i find it honorable that he has the testicular fortitude to express his film inspirations openly. I only know of a few other directors who would tell their inspirations (Spielberg and Lucas with their love of Cliffhanger films of the 40's as inspiration to Raiders and Star Wars comes to mind).
People who say that he isn't original are just looking at him at face value, because he expresses his love of films and his inspirations for his own, people think this. Though they would think that with every other director and or writer out there who would express their inspirations, which most keep hidden from the public.
His love for other films and how they have effected him is an admirable characteristic for such a highly thought of artist.
