That might be the funniest rant ever.

Agreed on the Holywood version of "retards."

I might move to Montreal just to have a conversation with you. That was, truly, brilliant.

Before the inevitable argument comes in to not refer to them as retards, I gotta say that I agree. I'm getting excited about where this topic will go

Yes, I think that the whole "mentally-challenged man with a big heart changes people" thing has gotten old. As for Radio, three words after seeing the previews: sappy Oscar-bait.

Had the movie just be plain fiction, I would agree. But seeing that this is a true story, and that it's emotion has changed the people in the town, I am in favor of it. It's one of those touching Reader's Digest stories that people sit back and say "Y'know... someone should make a movie outta this!"... well, THEY DID! And I hope it's good.

I actually think of this as another version of "Remember the Titans", moreso than another "retard film" like Forrest Gump.

The only 'retard' movie I liked (loved) was Rain Man. Know why? Because it was one of the first, and its the best. Dustin Hoffman in his best role in my opinion. Ever since when I see a 'retarded guy teaching others' movie, I think back to 'Rain Man' and how good it was and how ever since filmmakers have tried to make one better, and failed at every attempt.

And what "illness" does he have?

Down Syndrome?

I don't see why Retard movies are so unpopular other than that they're automatic Oscar bait...We only get a retard flick every few years. As for Radio...It looks like Remember The Titans with a retard thrown in. Mon dieu, this is the most offensive rant ever ;) :D

I told somebody that exact same thing yesterday. What a dumb looking movie.

Alternate Title

Remembering Retarded Titans

:D :D

Oh, and isn't it enough that poor Radio is mentally challenged? Did they have to give the poor bugger bad teeth too?

GOD YES I SOOOO AGREE!!! This is the WORST example of the "cuddly 'tard" movies that I have ever seen.

The first five seconds of the trailer failed my "Sphincter Test"

You know how when you see something SOOOO goddamn cheesy and stupid that your butt clenches completely shut because it realizes why would it need to take a shit when there is already such a massive, stinking turd there?

I Am Sam, my good man! That was last year. And this just a desperate attempt by Gooding to save his career which lays in a ditch with a bullet in its head.

I Am Sam was a movie starring a retard played by Sean Penn, and came out in 2001. And guess what? There was a retard with a pretty sizeable role in Gigli, one of the most inconsistent performances of an actor playing a retard ever.

Retard count: 4. I'm cutting down :)

That's probably God's fault. The real "Radio" actually is mentally challenged, with a bad set of teeth.

Now go throw tomatoes at the Jehovah's witnesses coming to your door for the horrendus mishap.

Well, I Am Sam made me say "You Are Shit" starring Sean "plz gives me oscarz roffle" Penn and Dakota Fanning...But I won't discuss her on this board.

And yes, the retard in Gigli set a new example for how not to act. I honestly don't know how he was retarded.

But, again, why do people have such a problem with actors playing retards? If you went by this topic, you'd think Forrest Gump was the bane of the devil.

I don't have a problem with movies about people who are changed by other people or experiences, I know what you mean though- the way Hollywood handles these kinds of movies is pretty insulting.I hate preachy movies that talk down to you as if the movie makers are better than we are.

My sister in law is retarded and I see a lot of Down's syndrome baggers at the grocery store. They are all pretty cute and very innocent and I like them all a lot but I have never really been inspired by any one of them. I am glad to see them working and being as productive as they can be.

I think the best portrayal was Leo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Though he was retarded, he wasn't treated sentimentally. He was simply another character in the story. That's the way it should be, IMO.

John Waters would say just that. But we could go way off topic discussing that matter.;)

There are certain acting roles that are considered the express route to the Oscars (winning or nominated):

The Mentally or Terminally Ill (Girl Interrupted, A Beautiful Mind, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Terms of Endearment, Hillary and Jackie, I Am Sam, Forrest Gump, Pride of the Yankees, Gaslight, Irma La Douce, All That Jazz, Frances, The Fisher King, Steel Magnolias, My Left Foot, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Shadowlands, Tom and Viv, Shine, As Good As it Gets, the End of the Affair, Iris ETC)

Alcoholics or Drug Addicts (Leaving Las Vegas, Arthur, The Lost Weekend, Days of Wine and Roses, Lenny, Ed Wood, Pollock etc)

Prostitutes (or variants) (Casino, Butterfly 8, Klute, Leaving Las Vegas, Mighty Aphrodite, Cabaret, Pretty Woman, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Bullets over Broadway etc)

Its obviously clear that there ahve been a LOT of Noms for playying the mentally and terminally ill, (I didn't even mention the physically disabled). What you notice also about that list is that the number of times actors with those types of characters is that they get more frequent in the last 20 years.

Now done well, these roles can be seen past the obvious title of "Oscar bait" but when done AWFUL, you truly see the role as nothing more then a vain attempt at an Oscar nod.

I've seen the previews for the film as well and felt that tinge of irritation. Let me suggest that maybe it's not so much the "Down-Syndrome" thing that's pissing people off but the fact that at least on the surface the movie looks blatenlty manipulative. And people are just friggin' tired being blatently manipulated as an audience. It's gotten completely out of hand. Forrest Gump was the crowning turd as some would say. It was a good movie and I cried like a baby during the film, but about a half hour after I was thinking...."What the fuck was that shit they pulled?"

I am a big fan of Cuba Gooding Jr. I think he's one of the most under rated actors working in Hollywood today. I also think he should drag his Agent out into the street and beat him. Damn talk about worthless.

You should read the book (Freak the Mighty) instead of seeing the movie. The movie is merely OK, the book is excellent.

You have such a lovley way with words, fellow schmoe. Are you by any chance a writer? I have a cousin who is mentaly challenged. He lives in a mental home clear off on the other side of the country. But even if it was close by I'd never visit him. Those places scare me. My cousin whose name is David, will hurt himself if people don't watch him. And this may sound funny but trust me,if it's happening to someone you love, it's anything but-he eats cigarette butts from ash trays. I know this movie is based on a true story. The key word here is "based" Hollyweird has taken a lot of liberties with this story you know they have. Look at A Beautiful Mind for proof of this. Radio looks sickening. I'll be watching my From Justin to Kelly DVD. Along with a Leprecaun Marathon before I watch this sappy crap.

Is anybody else reminded of Eddie Murphy's character in Bowfinger ? He plays a self-absorbed actor who decides that since the Academy always rewards white actors who play mentally impaired characters and black actors who play slaves, his best shot at getting an Oscar is... to play a retarded slave. That was years ago, people. Were Cuba and his people just not listening? Do they realize how sickeningly cloying and saccharine this looks, just from the previews? God, Hollywood will never learn.

I dont hate the fact that there are alot of movies with mentally challenged people changing peoples hearts and mind but yes it is getting old. Some movies, however, dont touch that subject {My personal favorite was Whats eating Gilbert Grape with leonaro dicaprio pulling off a great performance as a retarded teenager}.That movie did not touch the subject as "Boy who changes evetyones mind set". Some movies are out there probably to influence kids not to be against mentally challenged kids {if that was the directors case}. I have a brother with down syndrome and if it takes a movie with that plotline to get the meaning across to others...then i say do it
