View Full Version : Eddie Murphy: WTF?!?!?!?!

I feel the need to get this off my chest.
What in the HELL happened to Eddie Murphy? He went from hilarity in his concert films, Saturday Night Live, and 48 Hours, to absolute TURDBURGERS like Holy Man, I Spy, Showtime, The Nutty Professor 2, Daddy Day Care, and, God help us all, Pluto Nash. And now he's stuck making sub-par family movies. That's all well and good, Eddie, but you could be so much more! What's next, Dr Dolittle 3: Bestiality Knocks?
Does he have some sort of mental defect which causes him to make BAD MOVIES? Does he even read the scripts before accepting these parts? Is his agent Forrest Gump? Ugh! I hate to see people like him fritter away their talent! MAKE BETTER MOVIES OR GO AWAY, EDDIE MURPHY!

He needs a big comeback flick, like what Pulp-Fiction did for John Travolta.
Speaking of which, John Travolta needs another comeback too.

i definitely agree with the rant. it seems that the only thing this guy can make starts with an "S" and ends in "HIT". also, i think the haunted mansion could have been pretty cool until i saw the trailer with him in it. him being the star of the movie just blew any chance that i'll go see it.

Whoa Whoa Whoa..........
I will have to defend Showtime wasn't soo baad. A lot of people who saw it said it stunk up the waahzoo. I rented it on video, and yes I do agree that it wasnt the greatest movie, and there was no chemistry between Deniro & Murphy but hey, it was an awright flick. Nutty Professor 2, I saw this flick at the theater and I was laughing my ass off and so was everyone else in the theater. I enjoyed the sequel MUCH more versus the original. I will agree with Pluto Nash which went thru a name change and being kept on the shelf lord knows why by the studio and eventually tanked at the box office. YES, Eddie is in need of another big hit. Audiences still loves him but finding that comeback role is getting hard to find each day.
From all the movie credits that he has done since 48 Hours back in the early 80's have we seen Eddie in a SERIOUS drama, romatic lead, thriller that steers away from the ocassional Eddie Murphy one liners? Nooooo....
Unless Eddie takes a chance to experiment outside of the box, he will continue w/ comedy hits or misses.

S-HIT. I dont get it. ;)
I agree. Last night at Scary Movie 3, they showed a preview for Haunted Mansion, and when it was over, my dad leaned over to me and said 'He needs to go back to his Beverly Hills Cop days', and I said, I was just gonna say that to you. His last good movie, imo, was Nutty Professor 2. I loved NP2 because that movie was Eddie, thats his stuff. This whole 'Pluto Nash, Dr. Dolittle, Daddy Day Care stuff is not Eddie Murphy. The Eddie Murphy I know and respect would never stoop to such shitty roles. I will admit, I did like Daddy Day Care, but it still wasnt the Eddie I know and love.
The big question is, what caused this change? He went from 'Beverly Hills Cop' type roles to family man practically overnight. I want 'RAW' Eddie Murphy, not watered down family drivel Eddie Murphy. I realize that these family movies he's making make money, but Beverly Hills Cop made over $100 million at the box office when it came out. Nutty Professor was pretty much unstoppable at the B.O., so what caused this 'transition'?
I'm looking at my movie collection right now and heres what I see for Eddie Murphy: Beverly Hills Cop trilogy, 48 Hours, Another 48 Hours, Life (his last 'R' role), Nutty Professor 1 & 2, RAW, Best of Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live.
Looking at that you notice that other than Nutty Professor 1 & 2, I have none of his PG-13 and under movies, and thats because I feel, with the exception of Daddy Day Care, THEY SUCK! I dont think im alone in saying that Eddie needs to go back to what made him: 'R' rated comedies/action movies.

I think it started going down hill when he started creating his own projects instead of doing other people's stuff. He was always reported to have an entorage of friends he hung out with and created movies with.
I might be mistaken but I thought his family film phase started about the same time he got caught with the transvestite. I think he was trying to change his image quickly. His funniest stuff was actually when he was on SNL. His stuff was family oriented but also edgy- his Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood etc was hysterical.
i think his concert fottage Raw was funny but way too mean spirited, especially about women.
I was hoping Haunted Mansion would be funny- seems like the kind of material he would be great in (like SNL kind of stuff)

I have a theory that after the fame and fortune went to Eddie Murphy's head, he started turning down scripts and demanded too much money for them. So Hollywood producers decided to cast his twin brother in movies that aren't very good but are cheap to make.

I agree with the rant till certain point. I have never been a fan of Murphy, but he was standable some years ago. Now, he's annoying as hell. Everything in The Haunted Mansion looks good except for him. What a turd!
PS: I may give him a chance, since i have yet to see Bowfinger, which i've heard it's totally different from his usual shit.

I agree with you Nate, Eddie Murphy needs to go back to movies that really showcase his talent. What I really want to know is why he made this career change in the first place.

Murphy needs a career comeback. I think Haunted Mansion looks good, maybe that can help it a little.

I love Bowfinger, but once he turned into a "family man," it all went downhill. Not to mention that he seems like he'd be an asshole anyways, since he doesn't allow extras to look him in the eye. Being a poor judge of a good project only adds salt to the wound

Maybe he should be in the next Tarantino movie. That might actually work.

if someday by any chance an animation comes out, asking Eddie Murphy to be voice cover is more sound and practical idea.

Anyone consider that perhaps the man is content with the work and fan base that he is receiving?
Of course, I too lust for the days of SNL and Delirious... but just like when Dennis Miller commented on fans bashing Metallica because they cut their hair...
"It's time to realize that you're 40 years old, and need to move out of your parent's garage."
For some folks when they get older, they tire of the constant dick and fart jokes. Or Maybe Eddie is trying to break away from his stereotype, ala the schmoes bitching in the rant thread titled "I hate black comedians" because of their habitual acting roles.
Or maybe he looked over to his passenger seat one a mid-summer's night and saw that he was about to pay $50 for a BJ from a she-male, and decided to find Jesus.

While I was working on Cat In The Hat this summer I made friends with people who worked with him on Showtime. Yikes he sounded like an absolute monster from the descriptions so much so that it visibly embarrassed Robert De Niro. Ever since that its hard to watch him without thinking back to those stories.

When I saw the trailer for The Haunted Mansion, I got two feelings:
1.) That the trailer HAS GOT TO BE a Mastercard commercial...no 2003 movie has special effects that bad
and
2.)The sudden urge to vomit.

You apparently haven't seen Freddy Vs. Jason yet.
I guess the days of the raunchy Murphy are over... just in time for the explosion of Bernie Mac I guess.
