View Full Version : Huh, a Grey Cup? **The CFL PLAYOFF THREAD** (Canuck football, people)

The overwhelming popularity of Canadian football in this sports forum has inspired me to open up a CFL playoff thread. :p Don't worry y'all, it'll all be over by mid-November.

The Montreal Alouettes and Edmonton Eskimos were the best teams in their respective conferences so they get to skip week 1. They'll be watching the match-ups this Sunday to see who they'll be facing in two weeks time. Here are Sunday's match-ups:

B.C. Lions @ Toronto Argonauts

Saskatchewan Roughriders @ Winnipeg Bluebombers

Predictions, thoughts, comments, anyone?

hello? :D

I say the Argos beat the Lions and The Roughriders win it over the Bluebombers.

Go Alouettes!!! :p

My picks:

B.C. Lions - unlike their American counterparts, the Detroit Lions, the B.C. Lions actually have a winning record. Plus I live on the west coast, so it would be cool if they won.

Winnipeg Bluebombers - this game could be close, but I have to go with the Bluebombers because with the Roughriders, well...the name Roughriders conjures up images of either specially textured condoms, or Wrangler jeans and country music. I think the Bluebombers will win because they have a cooler name.

PS I don't know shit about the CFL, but I'm sticking to my picks. :D

I'll admit that I do hold a grudge against any organization that had any doing in Doug Flutie resurecting his NFL career.:D

That being said I dig that uni up there in that pic, so I predict whoever they are will win it all.

What a great idea U.S. expansion was.

Hmmm, let's see here.

Eskimos- hmmm, I don't see them being much of football players. Igloo building contest, I'd go with them. I do like the song Quinn the Eskimo though... but it isn't enough to bring home a Grey Cup, or is it Gray Cup?

Alouettes- I do like Moises Alou... but I don't think it is enough once again. Plus I have no idea what an Alouette is.

Argonauts-

Roughriders- These guys seem pretty rough and tumble and ready to kick a little ass... of course they could be a bunch of drunken rodeo clowns also. I'm hesistant on picking them.

Bluebombers- Hey I really like those red/white/blue bomb pop popcycles, but I don't know if they can win it all.

Lions- Fierce beasts of the jungle. They will eat the competition and win it all. It is written... it shall be done.

I'm glad I could provide such insight.:D

If you miss a field goal and it goes through the end zone or the player catching the ball decided not to run the ball out of the end zone the team gets a single and the same during a punt. It doesn't work during a kickoff.

Maybe the NFL should introduce this rule and then again after thinking about it maybe they shouldn't

Quite a contrast there, eh?

I'm an Alouettes fan too, Sev, though when Halifax finally gets a team (they're rumored to be next!) I'll be switching allegiances MIGHTY fast.

We're headed for the cup, I can FEEL it. Those Western teams are damned good (Edmonton especially) but we'll be OK. Maybe the new prime minister will be a good-luck charm, he'll be holding his meeting with the premiers at the Grey Cup game out in Saskatchewan, and he's from Quebec, so he has to be an Alouettes fan, right? Right?!

That is assuming we make it to the Cup, which, I think, we will.

Oh, predictions. I think the Roughriders will beat the Bluebombers (close game, though) and I say the Lions over the Argos.

Indiana Sev

The Argos spanked the Lions and now they'll face Montreal next weekend. This is the match-up I was hoping for, so all is well.

Now if the Roughriders can beat the Bombers tonight...

Tom Samborski

It appears Winnipeg is done:(. But Saskatchewan has to face the Eskimos next, so they'll easily lose. Milt Stegall was hurt, so this was probably the main factor in their loss, plus the defense was horrendous as well.

Yep, they did it! Nice, both teams I wanted to win, do.

Next week's predictions:

Toronto Argonauts @ Montreal Alouettes

The Alouettes will win it but it'll be a tough battle.

Saskatchewan Roughriders @ Edmonton Eskimos

This could go either way, the Eskies are favorites but I'm rooting for the Riders, I pick them to win.

Morgana

What? Neither of the teams I picked won? I don't even understand that. ;) That's ok though, I'm not giving up.

My next picks:

Montreal Alouettes

~ and ~

Edmonton Eskimos (As a Stars fan I can't root for the Oilers, but at least I can root for the Eskimos.)

You have to be against the city as a whole.

I'm taking the Argos if they keep playing like they did the past few weeks they can win it

Toronto 38 Montreal 31

Edmonton 34 Saskatchewan 28

Could very well be Ricky Ray's last game in the CFL since he could go in the NFL next year and if he does good luck to him.

a question to a Canadian...... How popular is the CFL in Canada? Is it like how the NFL is to Americans?

It's extremely popular in most of the cities (Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, British Columbia & Ottawa)*.

Toronto & Hamilton both had problems this year and both had to get new owners. They were both in danger of folding which can be a huge problem when you consider the league ONLY has 9 teams in the first place. They're fairly stable now, especially Toronto with their good season and spot in the playoffs.

It is far from being as financially stable or popular a league as the NFL.

But the Grey Cup game (our Superbowl) draws fans from all over Canada to the city in which it's played each year. I remember when it was played here a few years ago, I saw fans come from all over the country to attend the game.

This year it's being held in Saskatchewan and the RoughRiders will have a shot at playing in it if they manage to beat the Eskimos this week.

* Two of those mentioned are not cities, but provinces (Saskatchewan & British Columbia).

It should be noted, too, that its popularity seems to be growing in all parts of the nation. There was a time when no one give two shites about our dinky little league, but Ottawa recently got its team back (not the same team it had, but still, a team), and more and more I hear people on the street talking about the CFL.

And the fact that the new commissioner openly said in a major newsmagazine that he wants 10 teams - and he wants the tenth team in Halifax, which is about an hour away from here - is very exciting!

Morgana

So the live internet CFL scoreboard tells me the Allouettes have won 30-26. Who-hoo! :D

One down, one to go. Go Eskimos!

Sheeeshh, I don't know which league to follow first. :)

The CFL did seem to work in Baltimore. But that was before Baltimore got the Ravens, and that was the ONLY city that it worked in.

It is loved in most places, but Hamilton, Vancouver and Toronto don't seem to love it as much as the other six teams. I know that the problem with the CFL in Toronto is that it's seen as the minor leagues, and most people here want an NFL team really badly.

It's going to be a re-match of last year's Grey Cup game. Drag. :( I wanted the Roughriders to make it to the big game.

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Montreal Aouettes on Taylor Field in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Alouettes will repeat.

I think Flutie should quit being the Chargers' whipping boy and get his ass back to where he belongs, meaning the CFL, but not necessarily the Argos. See where I'm going with this.

There was rumors of him and his brother somehow coming to Hamilton, but with Flutie's game against San Diego might put those rumors on ice.

Well I hope Ricky Ray gets a good shot with an NFL team after this game appearently he will get a workout or practice or something with the Chiefs.

Well Halifax or Quebec who should be the 10th team. Quebec is the bigger city so we'll see where this goes in 3-7 years.

My Grey Cup prediction
Edmonton 28 Montreal 24

There wasn't any way that I knew of to catch the game. I would have definately watched if I knew of a way. I have a real soft spot in my heart for the CFL since we had a team here in Baltimore. I think I might try to plan a trip up to Montreal next year to catch the Alouettes.

Well my 28-24 prediction was close I was only off by about 8 points.

Good game and the best one since the Calgary-Hamilton game in I think 98 where it was decided by a final field goal, and the same with the 1996 grey cup that had Toronto and Edmonton.
