I haven't watched that movie in over 10 years, but I used to love it; I should pick up the DVD.
Great stuff. I remember when it came out in the 80s, the movie was overshadowed by the press coverage of "Cosby girl takes her top off and has bloody sex."
I think that sort of ruined its theatrical run.

Oh god! I LOVE this movie! One of my all time favorites! That ending is just mind boggling (no spoilers). The atmosphere, the intricate details of the storyline, the symbolism. Pure genius!

this is a fantastic movie. creepy, great story and script, superb direction by Alan Parker, Mickey Rourke..you name it, this one's got it. Oh..i am a sucker for atmosphere in horror films....and this one's got as much atmosphere as the amount of semen that has been through Jenna Jameson's digestive tract. Completely and utterly a great film.

ANGEL HEART (1987) Directed by Alan Parker. A stylish, atmospheric hybrid of the supernatural thriller and film noir genres. Mickey Rourke (in his best role to date) stars as Brooklyn private detective Harold Angel (names are symbolic in this film), who is enlisted by a mysterious client, Mr. Louis Cypher (a devilish Robert DeNiro) to search for a missing jazz musician. Angel’s investigation leads him to the voodoo culture of 1950’s New Orleans, where he meets two mysterious women: sexy voodoo priestess Epiphany Proudfoot (Lisa Bonet), and sultry fortune teller Margaret Kruzmarck (Charlotte Rampling). A series of grisly murders plagues Angel’s case, leading to a slam-bang twist ending that foreshadowed many similarly themed films that followed (think JACOB'S LADDER and THE SIXTH SENSE). The steamy sex scene between Rourke and "Cosby" kid Bonet almost earned the film an X-rating. This complicated, intelligent thriller is definitely worth a look. One of the best horror films of the 1980’s. My grade: A

10/10 A+ I love this film.
And what is really cool? Going down south to New Orleans and other places is Louisiana and Alabama and actually FEELING the movie all over again. This film is SO GOD DAMN New Orleans that it literally drips Mardi Gras beads. I highly recommend going and you 'll see what I mean. I only wished I would have seen those little tap dancing kids. Now that would have creeped me out.
I adore the subtlety of this film and wish something like it would come along again . Something voodoo-spiritual-black-magic-film-noir-stylish-jazzy like. One can dream.

Angel Heart, is based upon the novel Falling Angel, by William Hjortsberg. The film is set in the 50's and is about a private detective named Harry Angel, who is hired by Louis Cyphre, to search for a man named Johnny Favourite, who owes him something. Harry, then goes to Louisiana, to search for Johnny, but after he interviews people who knew Johnny, they all end up dead and soon Harry, is a suspect. Soon, Harry, meets Epiphany Proudfoot, a black girl who says that her father was Johnny Favourite, and hasn't seen him in years and assumes that he is dead. Harry, then discovers that most people in Louisiana, worship voodoo and that Johnny, probably did too. Soon, Harry, is wanted for more murders of people he investigated and soon he finds out who and where Johnny Favourite, is but he doesn't like what he finds. Winner of The Young Artist Award for Best Young Female Superstar In Motion Pictures (Lisa Bonet, who plays Epiphany Proudfoot) at The Young Artists Awards. Angel Heart, was originally rated X, because of a scene where Harry, and Epiphany, have sex. Without giving too much away this film will be found in your local videostore's horror section because it deals with souls, the occult and hell. Angel Heart, has good performances by Mickey Rourke, as Harry Angel, and Lisa Bonet, who plays Epiphany Proudfoot, and it also features good direction by director Alan Parker, good cinematography and is very good visually. The film has a great script that keeps you hanging on to the end and match this with the great performances, direction, visuals and cinematography and you have yourself a great horror film.
