Since Oscar season will be earlier than usual due to the date change (sometime in February, therefore the noms will be announced in early January)...which actors and actresses from 2003 stand a chance to snag one of these Golden Boys?

MY PREDICTIONS

MYSTIC RIVER could very well yield multiple noms for its all-star cast, especially standouts Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Marcia Gay Harden.

JOHNNY DEPP could be the double threat this year, he was an early favorite for Lead Actor in PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN, and his hilarious supporting turn in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO was the best thing about that movie.

MATCHSTICK MEN, although it has peaked, produced superb performances from Nicolas Cage, Alison Lohmann and Sam Rockwell that the Academy won't overlook.

LOST IN TRANSLATION leads Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen seem destined to be critics' faves come Christmas, which will hopefully boost their chances for Oscar nods.

UMA THURMAN is generating buzz as KILL BILL's anti-heroine.

LONGSHOTS usually include one spot in the Best Actress category reserved for a foreign actress, so my money is on either Charlotte Rampling for SWIMMING POOL or Audrey Tautou for DIRTY PRETTY THINGS.

Then again, this might be THE LORD OF THE RINGS' year, so maybe we should expect multiple noms for the supporting players from that epic, as well as other larger-scale holiday releases like THE ALAMO, COLD MOUNTAIN and THE HUMAN STAIN (I'm praying for a shutout among all of these...spread the wealth...Billy Bob, Sir Tony and Nic already have trophies on their mantles).

Mystic River, Cold Mountain and Return of the King are all probable Best Picture nominees, IMO. I don't know what will fill the last two spots; maybe The House of Sand and Fog could be the fourth nominee. I'm just not seeing it with The Last Samurai, at all. Master and Commander could make the final cut.

2003 has been a great year for female performances, IMO. Angela Bettis is a HUGE longshot, I don't think she has a hope in hell at this point, but it would be cool if hell froze over. I predict Evan Rachel Wood will sneak in, hopefully, based on the great buzz surrounding her great performance. At this point, I might agree with Uma Thurman making the cut, but it's a violent grindhouse flick, and she won't get a thing out of it.

Lost in Translation: perhaps the Little Arthouse Flick that Could has a chance at some gold, mostly in the performances of Murray and Johansson. Sofia Coppola might get a nom, but I think more for her screenplay.

I guess I have to wait a few months to see whether or not I'm surprised...

I would be shocked if Depp was nominated for potc or ouatim. Has there been any serious buzz for him apart from fanboys talking on the net?

Well, for PIRATES OF THE CARABBEAN he has. All movie critics in France at least have called for him to get an Oscar nomination for this one, it's been all over TV over here, and I saw a couple of shows on CNN and on the British TV where they said he could hope to get one. I'm not sure he will, but it was the best performance of the year, so she sure as hell deserves at least a nomination.

I've seen FYC ads, and some of the ones we think are in a particular category are being campaigned in a different category.

Robert Duvall is being campaigned in the lead category for OPEN RANGE, not supporting.

Scarlett Johannson is being campaigned in the supporting category for LOST IN TRANSLATION, not lead. For Johannson it's the only way for her to get a nomination because the Academy has a thing against younger actors getting lead noms (Johannson will be 19 soon and it's for her own good to be campaigned supporting if she wants a nomination).
