Since Oscar season will be earlier than usual due to the date change (sometime in February, therefore the noms will be announced in early January)...which actors and actresses from 2003 stand a chance to snag one of these Golden Boys?
MY PREDICTIONS
MYSTIC RIVER could very well yield multiple noms for its all-star cast, especially standouts Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Marcia Gay Harden.
JOHNNY DEPP could be the double threat this year, he was an early favorite for Lead Actor in PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN, and his hilarious supporting turn in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO was the best thing about that movie.
MATCHSTICK MEN, although it has peaked, produced superb performances from Nicolas Cage, Alison Lohmann and Sam Rockwell that the Academy won't overlook.
LOST IN TRANSLATION leads Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen seem destined to be critics' faves come Christmas, which will hopefully boost their chances for Oscar nods.
UMA THURMAN is generating buzz as KILL BILL's anti-heroine.
LONGSHOTS usually include one spot in the Best Actress category reserved for a foreign actress, so my money is on either Charlotte Rampling for SWIMMING POOL or Audrey Tautou for DIRTY PRETTY THINGS.
Then again, this might be THE LORD OF THE RINGS' year, so maybe we should expect multiple noms for the supporting players from that epic, as well as other larger-scale holiday releases like THE ALAMO, COLD MOUNTAIN and THE HUMAN STAIN (I'm praying for a shutout among all of these...spread the wealth...Billy Bob, Sir Tony and Nic already have trophies on their mantles).
