now, how many of us collect something? key Chains? Baseball Cards? Coins? Stamps?
Everyone has a collection right? Something they can take out and look at whenever they want to. Things that when you look at em, it is so serene. Well for me it is my DVD collection. I own close to 500 DVD's, and my friends are always bustin my balls about my collection, askin why i spend so much bank on these things.
Do any of you have bad ass Collections that people are just jealous of and it annoys you because you arent down with people always chastising you for your collection?
Know what i mean??

I have a shitload of baseball cards, many very rare, but no one gives a shit because no one buys or collects baseball cards anymore. Also, I have just about every 'Friends' thing imaginable: all the seasons so far on DVD, the trivia book, the trivia board game, various cast photos, and all my friends give me shit about it because im like the only guy they know that loves the show.
Another thing, my room is, and will be from now on, Wrigleyville. Cubs stuff everywhere! My friends all hate the Cubs and when they come over they have to give me shit about how they lost, and suck and all that and I just say to them: "Your just jealous because you aren't anywhere near as passionate about anything as I am about my Cubs." Either that or I just punch them and tell them to shut the fuck up before I chokeslam their asses through the floor.

I plan to retire on my Star Wars collection, which my mum and dad had the foresight to keep in their attic when I would have happily swapped the entire lot for a bottle of cider and a feel of breast at the age of 13. It's a pretty sweet collection, including original Boba Fett, Han Solo, Luke and about 65 others, as well as Slave 1, Speederbike, Ewok village, AT-AT, Millenium Falcon, X-Wing, Y-Wing, Imperial Fighter, Rancor monster and a host of other things. Some are in their original boxes, some are not, but the point is that what you collect now, whether you know it or not, will become priceless later on. DVD's won't appreciate the same way unless they are made obsolete, like vinyl, but if the collection makes you happy, everyone else should mind their own business and leave you to enjoy it...

My friends say i spend too much money in Cinema and too few in alcohol... oh, well...
They also don't understand why most times i don't want to enter a fuckin' disco that costs around $10 (VERY expensive here in Spain), while i spend money on books...
Guess i'm a weird guy nowadays!

I think a DVD collection of 500 films is pretty sweet, and if your friends are giving you shit then perhaps you could poison them or something? I have a few collections going (movies, weapons, sexy Hawaiian shirts, signed photos of Robert Davi) but nothing that I'm overly passionate about collecting, but if any of my buddys criticize me I kick them until they are dead.
People are assholes anyway. As has already been mentioned by a few people, most kids are so "cool" and "trendy" that they waste all their money on going to night clubs and buying alcohol. Nice budgeting jackass - paying WAY too much for drinks, paying to get in the club in the first place, paying for a taxi cos you're drunk and can't drive, wasting money on drinks for the whores at the bar who about as interested in the shitty smalltalk as you are, "dance" to the worst chart music imaginable, and to top it all off they tell you WHAT FUCKING ATTIRE YOU HAVE TO WEAR.
That's why the TZA is a true badass, because he'll spend a fiver tops on alcohol at the off licence, wear whatever the fuck he wants, listen to some ass kicking rap music instead of techno dance Ibiza horseshit, and all he has to do is point at a random chick and he can get her because he's a beautiful gladiator with a beautiful sword; and instead of awkwardly dancing and making redundant smalltalk he just takes her home and forces her to watch Evil Dead and Predator and then he uses his magical love making skills and then boots her out so he can watch the wrestling in peace. Yeah, so DVD collections are cool.

I not only have a large DVD/video collection, I have a HUGE collection of movies that are the ultimate in bad movies. I have more movies in my collcetion with budgets of under $1 million than most people have movies in their collection. I probably have more non-porn, shot on video movies in my collection than most people have movies in their collection. I just love outrageously bad, cheesy sci-fi, horror and TnA cheesy b-flicks.
Breasts, explosions, fake blood, fake rubber monsters, bad guys with realy good bad guy laughs (think Travolta's laugh in "Battlefield Earth" (yes, I own it on DVD) without the charm or charisma ;-)), transvestite hitmen (thank you Andy Sidaris), faded tv stars cashing a quick paycheck, etc. and the movie will most likel, at some point, end up in my collection.
I think I just might own the single largest dvd/video collection of the IMDB bottom 100 than just about anyone else on the face of the earth (and I'm damn proud of it). Two notables missing from my bad movie collection: From Justin To Kelly and Gigli (even I have my standards (and the fact that Gigli's not out on DVD yet ;-))
My friends love to bust my balls, but then I force them to sit through "Samson Vs. The Supreme Dictator From Outer Space" and "Manos: Hands Of Fate" and then their ballbusting turns to disgust ;-)))

I think collecting movies can become an "addiction" in that a person feels like they want to own every movie. We collected a lot of video tapes and now they are going the way of the 8 track tape. My fear is that DVDs will be replaced at some point, too, and for every 4 DVDs that represents 100 bucks. I do collect DVDs but now I restrict myself to buying only our absolute favorites and also it has to be the kind of film we will rewatch. For instance, Raiders of the Lost Ark can be watched over and over and True Lies too. Some films are good but you might not want to really see them again.
Another thing I've been doing is buying used DVDs at Hollywood or Blockbuster- they are guaranteed to work and they are often in perfect condition- sometimes I only pay about 7 bucks for a previously viewed.
Everyone does have the right to collect whatever they want, but you just don't want to be stuck with thousands of dollars of stuff that will be obsolete in ten years. Doens't it tick you off when you buy a DVD and then they come out with a new improved DVD with many new extras? I hate that!

i still have money to go have a good time. (my friends are big drinkers.. me not so much, a lil bit, but not enough to spend alot of dough on)
besides... my collection of dvd's has gotten me laid and saved me money on many an occasion: i go to a lady's house, bring the newest release i have gotten, we lay on the couch together... bada bing bada boom. 10-15 seconds later... we're back to the movie, barely missed any plot! (haha... jk of course)
My friend recently told me i have a bad influence on him... we go to Best buy usually once a week (on tuesdays most of the time to pick up the new releases) and each week he spends more and more cash, he has blamed me for spendin the dough on this, because he see's me havin fun buyin shit!
Oh Well!

I'm slowly building up a collection of bad movies (Dead-Alive, Plan 9, etc.) that my friends and I have watched for bad movie night. It seems like most people just can't understand how it can sometimes be fun to watch bad movies. Of course, most of those people also didn't use to watch MST3K religiously, like I did.

I always get the same question..."Why don't you just download movies?" To which I reply...
"ARRRRRRGGHHHHHHHHHH!"
What is up with this obsession about downloading?! It's like people think just because I actually pay money for my movies I'm getting ripped off. I like my hardcover, precious encased DVD's, I don't want a shitty looking homemade CD that has the words "A Clockwork Orange" written on it in permanent marker. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the fancy gimmicks, but I love my collection. I know the downloading craze may not take a LOT of money from the system, if some people didn't at least buy the movies, the companies might lose a lot more money. So, you know that the next person who asks me this stupid question, I will firmly reply...
"FUCK YOU!" :D
Then I'll run away....

The way I see it is basically everything is upgraded in years times. And usually nothing becomes absolutely obsolete, unless it's over an extremely long period in time. VHS will stay around awhile I bet, even though DVDs are the dominant form. Almost all people have are CDs for music but there are also those cassette tapes around and available. And then there's the people who are slower to catch up to technology (my uncle just got a cd player, my dads never seen a dvd play but is curious about one). So while we're obsessing, other people are only slowly catching up, so while it may not remain the biggest and baddest it will stay around awhile.
If you love movies, it's easy to spend the money. What I mean by this is :
1. There's the theatre hounds. Spend, with admission price, drink and food, the cost equivalent of a 12 buck or more DVD. Then they leave and cannot see the movie again without paying more money.
2. Rentals. Depending on the selection, this can also get expensive. My Blockbuster is 4 something for a DVD, while some of those DVDs are 9.99 to buy or less...Easy to do the math, figuring 4 bucks more means no late fees, gas money on returning, hassles, and you can keep the thing and watch it repeatably.
3. Just watch movies on cables/sattetlite: Still expensive as hell, it all adds up
So don't worry about the future when buying your DVDs/movies. What's important is now. I still have VHS that I'll keep around for years that I've owned since childhood, and the same now with DVDs. If you look at the big picture, buying movies seems more economical and fulfilling.
It's not just a collection -- it's a hobby. Hobbies cost money, but hobbies are what makes life worthwhile. Some folks have their work and that's it. I would be miserable that way. Work to make money and survive but LIVE through entertainment, friends, and things you enjoy.
I'm not going to die one day and look back and repspect that I was hard worker and can't bring the money to my grave. I'm going to look back and think of the people I met, the things I saw, the feelings I brought to other people, what they did for me, and how much I accomplished in things i loved: One being movies.
You get caught up in the industry. With this message board people form a community of like minded fans, and this adds to your existence. Movies, ways to watch them (with crowds, alone, rituals, theatres, the excitement of buying, special extras with those films, the contests, the collectables).
Nope, don't see anything wrong with that.
Explain to your friends that their 12 dollar drink can't be brought back, but that your 12 dollar DVD will last you for years and give you memories, topics for conversation, and get you through hard times over and over again.

Now, I don't think that's entirely true. Sure, maybe ONE drink won't change anything. But a few twelve dollar drinks may just give your years of memories, conversations, and scar your friend's reputation forever:D

My wife is the one that busts my balls. I have @ 100 DVD's. Yeah it's a good bit of cash I put into it, and they are all movies I love. Yet she goes out and spends 20 bucks every Saturday, going to yard sales and buying other peoples shit....which we eventually sell at a yard sale at our house.
My friends really don't give a shit.

i am pretty lucky, my friends love my dvd collection (close to 200) and video collection(150+) and so does my family, thats because they never have to spend money on rentals.
My comic collection is a different story, but they dont see that I will eventually be making money off my comics in years to come.

I recently got married and with that came the merging of two DVD collections. Between the two of us, my husband and I probably have close to a thousand DVDs, maybe even more. We have two dvd storage cabinets that are supposed to hold 560 DVDs each and both are filled to bursting.
I'm sure there are some people who'd raise an eyebrow over the volume of movies we own, but who cares? People collect things they love and that's one of the things that makes life good.

That really sucks that you get crap from your friends on that, sounds like THEY need a hobby besides puttin' your DVDs down.
I have near 500 DVDs, but mostly I just get compliments. Usually it's "I can't believe you're a girl and have so many movies!" I don't know what my gender has to do with it, but there you go. I guess the majority of DVD collectors are male.
Anyway, I have this big collection filled with movies, documentaries and TV shows I love and will love for years- that's enough to make me not care what anyone else thinks :) Plus I don't drink or smoke and I'm not a fashionista so my disposable income is all about the movies.

My husband and I have about 1,500 movies in various formats. My husband has over 2,000 soundtrack score cd's. VHS will stay around awhile
Depends on how you define a while. The films are badly degraded by the 20 year point. That's the thing I hate the most about VHS by far. Whereas the handful of VCDs, all my LDs, and my DVDs will last beyond my lifetime.
I collect Radioactive Dreams memorabilia.. I'm not sure why, but I do. I've never been hassled about it though.
Well, I didn't collect ALL of these myself, cause I kinda picked up on the hobby from my Dad. But together we have over 3,000 movie posters and a huge collection of big cardboard diplays from the multiplexes. No one really gives me any crap about it though, most people think it's pretty cool stuff.

I get buying dvds is wasting all the time from my friends. But they go out and drink $20.00 a night away. People have all kinds of collections. I have my dvds. I don't care if they don't like them. I get my money's worth out of them. I love staying home and watching my home theater and having food/drink in the next room. You pay around $15-17 for a dvd and you have the whole family watch it. You have snacks in the house and money still in your pocket. I only loan my dvds to my dad and mom when they visit and they bring them back in a few days. Other members of my family use to keep them for weeks. No more!

Ha, excellent discipline. My friends steal by DVDs off me for months and months at a time, sometimes over a year. But I guess it's vice versa because I've still got some tapes and discs of other people's that I've had for almost a year. We're just dopey and lazy. It pisses me off though when they borrow porn and lie and say that they'll return it the next day but a month later they still don't return it and when you call them they're "never in" and you really want it back because it's one of your best films. Ain't that right, schmoes, that's really annoying when they do that? Bastards.

Standees....Charlie's Angels 2, xXx, Minority Report, Legally Blonde 2, Fight Club (a great one, and rare), We Were Slodiers, Signs, Rounders (YES!), Gigli (eww), Like Mike, LOTR 1 and 2, Scorpion King, Gangs of NY, Adaptation, Man Apart, Unbreakable...to name a few. I'm not sure how many Standees we have total. My fav is probably the EXTREMELY rare Scarface one (ridiculously overrated movie, great looking posters, standees...whatever).
"I just dont have balls to ask the movie theaters for free movie posters and shit of that sort"
Just depends on who and where you ask. I do have a few connections, but not a lot. Most of them I just went in the morning to the theatre when the standee is new and ask for it. I think I've paid for like 5 of them. Mostly they don't care, since theatres sometimes have policies against employees taking them. If you catch them at the right time, sometimes they will let you have one on the spot (if it's old or something).
