Does any one think that modern horror films are becoming a parody unto themselves.
i mean with each one released they get more and more stupid and funny.
i think the studio's should go back to the old school of cluastrophobic sci fi horrors like the thing and alien, man those things were scary,
what does every one else think?
bring back old and scary.

Actually i think the opposite is happenning, horror films are starting to get more serious IMO, especially with the growing interest and amount of SCARY horror films from Japan
theres also films such as Wrong Turn and May that are serious horror flicks and don't go for laughs or recycle the slasher flick that has been done hundreds of times

Yeah, I think the "Scream" era is finally coming to a well deserved end. People are getting sick of the paint-by-numbers teen slasher films and are now looking for more psychological horror ala Cold Creek Manor, the Ring etc.
We finally got the Freddy versus Jason movie out of our system, so now its time to turn a serious eye once again towards the horror genre.

Actually, I think that "Scream" era ended in early 2001 with "Valentine." There's been no theatrical "whodonits" since. I like to think that later 2001 started a new era of suspense horror era with "Joy Ride."

I enjoy the modern teen slashers to a degree, but only if the makers actually realise what they're making is shitty (I love Urban Legend, but hate the Scream films because they think they're superior and intelligent). I'm glad the 80's slasher flick genre is still alive with beauts like Jeepers Creepers and Wrong Turn (which don't have obnoxious teens spouting quotes from Psycho), but I also love how we're getting proper horror films too. I thought The Ring was great (Hollywood realises that Asia are producing some good horrors, which is good for both markets), and I liked What Lies Beneath and Stir of Echoes and Sixth Sense.
To be honest - going back to the first post - I never liked The Thing that much, and thought Alien was really really shitty. The scariest films I've ever seen were Don't Look Now, Jacob's Ladder, and to an extent the Exorcist. I don't think the atmosphere or originality of these films could ever be matched by modern movie makers.

While I have my gripes with "Scream"-type movies, I hated the trend of the late 80's of the horror comedy.
While I enjoy a certain amount of black comedy, I prefer my horror straight up and it seems that too many filmmakers were busy trying to squeeze in laughs and make their villians into killer standup comedians.
One of the worst offenders was the zombie genre. I like my zombies slow moving, creepy and single-minded (braaaainnnnnns) and not undead comedians. BTW, fuck off Ken Weiderhorn, your shitty piece of shit "Return Of The Living Dead Part2" helped usher that in.
I'm glad to see more straight horror flicks out there that don't feel they have to through in comedy bits and one-liners after every kill just to tone down the scare factor for some 14 year old mall rat skank.......

the shitty part about modern hooror movies is . there to fast. scenes are a blur.. no comedy is needed. why are they putting it in there.. horror movies aren't for humor. there supposed to keep your eyes glued on the tv. make you think how important life is. i just wish i could watch a new horror movie without laughing

Yea, I thought Wrong Turn was a pretty damn good horror movie, and I was pretty pleasantly surprised... Also the TCM remake was what the original SHOULD have been, it was THAT fuckin good! ;)

im curious, what is everyones Opinion of The Blair Witch Project??
It didnt reinvent the Genre.. because it could not be imitated. Because there could never be another movie like it.

I liked Blair Witch upon my first viewing, but now I can't watch it. It just shows anyone can make a movie by just carrying a cam corder and running around with it screaming.
I'm surprised so many here like Wrong Turn. I didn't care for it at all. It seemed like they tried to tie in Deliverance and TCM, and it just didn't work.

BWP was brilliant for the way it was marketed.... the movie however was beyond stupid for me.

I never dug the post-Scream method of making horror movies, though I did enjoy the sadistic nature of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake since it didn't bullshit with comic relief killers

Alien and The Thing, to me, seem like the most copied of all horror/thriller/suspense movies.
What are you going on when you say modern horror movies? Scream? That is meant to be somewhat of a satire. I'm not sure. Van Helsing? If you want the talk junk about that one, go ahead.
Dawn of the Dead was solid - I think horror is on an upswing.
When you say "old and scary" to what are you refering? For me, that could mean any where from Rosemary's Baby to Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm sort of fuzzy there.
Well, I gave you my run down of modern horror films, but I still don't know what yours is, odyssey. I hope maybe there are some cues for you to go on. If anything, I hope you'll give examples.
Rock on, horror buff soldier!

i agree.
when halloween resurrection came out, my friends and i saw it (i love the original). i was laughing so hard, my friends were like "what is she laughing at"...man, it was more of a comedy then a horror. it was a pathetic attempt to scare horror fans. PATHETIC!

I think in the last year or so, we have gotten some good horror movies. Then 10-12 years before that most horror was shit.

I also think horror is hitting a high note recently.
Movies like Freddy Vrs Jason, The DOTD remake, The Ring, Frailty, Signs, Bubba Ho-tep, Dog Soldiers, 28 Days Later, ect, ect, make me think horror is back in a big way.
The last year ot two has been really pretty damn good! Yeah stuff like Resident Evil, Halloween Ressurection, Darkness Falls, The Order, and such have come out with zero scares but u gotta take the good with the bad.

Yep.
Horror films are also making some big cash.. so you know they will make more, and get better director to make them.
like this "Saw" movie .. holy shit! it looks fuckin' great.
Horror movies are back!

My only major gripe with modern horror films is that there are too many remakes. Do all these films need remakes? How about some original films? TCM and Dawn didn't need remakes.

Amen to that, bro. I couldn't even finish watching it. Lame lame lame. Way too contrived, no suspense, too predictable, shitty acting.
I've been collecting horror movies for years, and I can tell you, the teen slasher shit is WAY too played out. I don't own a single teen-slasher made past 1981. In my humble opinion, they pretty much ALL suck. Please, someone prove me wrong.
With all of the different sub-genres contained within the horror realm, I think it's nearly impossible to be a purist. I mean, come on, if there were no comedy in horror, the Evil Dead series never would have happened. Gasp!
That being said, I watched Alien and Aliens last night. All I can say is HOLY SHIT. Brilliant freakin shit right there.

I'm not going to prove you wrong because I think the slashers of the early 80s and the 70s are much better. They may have taken themselves seriously, but that's what made them scarier. I can't get scared watching people get slaughtered if they're cracking jokes the whole time, and getting chased around while the latest MTV flavor of the month band's music plays in the background.
I will say though that Cherry Falls was very good for a modern slasher. It did have that 80s vibe to it, and it was gory & scary in some places. I also really enjoyed Session 9 too. That movie proved you didn't need lots of jokes and Blink-182 to be entertaining.

Slashers are getting old becuase they ARE old.
The problem is that a slasher is the hardest type of movie to make good becuase they are the most predictable, even the term "slasher" pretty much tells u all u need to know going into the movie.
Killer stalks people, people run from killer. Its hard to innovate on this simple formula when so much has already been done.
Anything people do nowadyas is going to resemble something that has already been done, besides the slasher genre was never that great to begin with. Only Halloween, Scream, and Nightmare on Elmstreet stand out for me as really great slashers. (sequels not included!)

I think the problem is the genre itself. I've never liked horror because of all film genres, it expects the least of its audience. I think 98% of horror movies are pure shit.
I do think that when a horror movie is well done, and I mean really well done, they can be great experiences, but more often than not they crap out.
I think the best horror relies of creepy atmosphere. Dudes running around with knives tossing off zingers never did anything for me.
To me, the scariest movie I've ever seen was Jaws, because it's something that could really happen.

Two words: Haute Tension. It's a slasher, but is so good, just because of total no fucking about attitude. It opens with Philippe Nahon- the butcher from the gaspar noe movies- giving himself a blow job with a severed head, and then without a fuss moves on to some of the most violent murders in movie history. It'll restore you're faith. Hopefully.

You have a point there... but... For those like me that have imported many, many Asian horror flicks... The same thing is happening to them. The scary Asian ghost is just not doing it anymore. Way too much of a good thing.
Yeah you have a point there rtatick, the quite heavily hyped a tale of two sisters did nothing for me except to confuse and bore me.
