View Full Version : Really Bad CGI

One movie that comes to mind is Blade II. The fight in front of the god lights looks so fake at times.

Matrix Reloaded, Neo vs The Agents. Half of it wasn't even real!

Star Wars: Episode 1+2. The backdrops and scenery all make feel really fake.

Here's a question: Is there any movie out there which utilizes CGI that won't eventually be torn apart by CGI haters for looking fake, with the exception of JP and T2 (and even then there are probably haters of those two movies' fake CGI)?

But one that really stood out to me in a visually painful way is The Mummy Returns.

There was some horrid CGI work in Jason X.

Not as bad as the shite in Brotherhood of the Wolf. Something about the animation being choppy gives you a clue. . .

The Matrix Reloaded CGI was absolutely awful. I hated every moment of it.

Also, the Harry Potter quidditch sequences could be a lot better.

Surprised no one mentioned The Hulk yet. I don't see how they were expecting anyone to find that realistic. Then again, it is a big green monster, so maybe it's not supposed to...but still, they could have done a much better job. They might as well have put Shrek in there.

If you're talking about the ending of Vanilla Sky...yes, I think that was CGI. It was ok. And I think that was the only part where there was CGI. (When David almost jumps off the building and the camera swoops over him.) The opening scene was, in fact, not computer generated.

BAD CGI:

The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
The Fellowship of the Ring
Matrix Reloaded
all the Harry Potter films
Blade II
Resident Evil
Spider-Man
Daredevil

and the worst CGI I ever seen ... The Hulk.

BTW, I agree on Daredevil too, basically because it was exactly the same than Spiderman. I guess they share programs ;)

Although it was overly enjoyable the CGI in "The Mummy Returns" during the temple fight with the Scorpion King was pretty frou frou.

Anything in the "Tomb Raider" films. Pegah!

Although it wasn't BAD BAD per se, it was most obvious in "Blade II" when you see Blade and Nyssa fighting in front of the floodlights at the beginning.

Same case with "Matrix Reloaded". Although it suffered too MUCH CGI. Along with the "Star Wars" prequals. Relying on visual effects is one risky business.

An American werewolf in Paris has the worst cgi for a feature imo.

I dunno if this counts but the worst cgi ever has to be tv movie/straight to video movie Babylon 5: In the Beginning. The landscape shots in that look like they were done on a playstation one.

What the fuck were they thinking with The Hulk? The CGI was laughable, I'm no movie technician but it was way to obvious, Spiderman was pretty bad as well. These superhero movies are out of control with that shit, let's hope the new Batman gets Tim Burton so we won't have to see this computer generated bullshit.

It's already been announced that Christopher Nolan is directing the new Batman movie.

That scene in Deep Blue Sea where the guy gets chomped in half by two sharks is rather poorly done.

Here's a really obscure one: there's this movie called Demons In My Head. I saw a trailer and the CGI looked phenomonaly (sp) bad.

The CGI explosions & fire at the end of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were TERRIBLE.

Jason X had CGI scenes that looked like fucking video game footage!

The Blade II fight scene between Blade and Nyssa near the beginning had some pretty bad CGI (the rest of the movie was, for the most part, good, though).

Recent big Hollywood pictures with some really bad CGI:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Jurassic Park 3
The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Hulk
Blade II
Dreamcatcher
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (But that didn't bother me)
Freddy vs Jason (Same here)
Deep Blue Sea (Really really bad CGI, but who cares about it, the movie is so much fun!)
Driven

And I can go on and on. And no, I'm not a CGI hater at all.

I'm not expecting Jurassic Park quality CGI given the age and technology, but it's hard to forgive it when the whole movie is a series of fights with exceedingly fake looking creatures who don't even interact with live action correctly. Doesn't help that the movie is pretty bad in itself

I liked the effects in those films. Maybe a few shots were shoddy, but not really.

Want bad CGI? Look at the Star Wars prequels. They overuse CGI so much that whenever something that is actually organic shows up, it screams !MICROSOFT PAINT! Really shoddy stuff, especially the character animation.

Spiderman was terrible.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle looked very rushed

Blade II the fight sene with the ninja's, Tekken 1 (PS game) opening looked better!

2 Fast 2 Furious - real cars! i want to see REAL cars!

Titanic - enough said!

Wild Wild West - The spider was cool, the rest was crapo

-Spider-Man...(shudder)

And I would just like to take a moment to say that although the CG in The Matrix Reloaded wasn't great, it wasn't horrible in my personal opinion. Coupled with the fact that what's happening with the CG completely kicks my ass enough so as to allow myself to forgive it's imperfections.

"Anyone who doesn't like Reloaded can go eat something displeasing!!!"

Jason X looked like it was made with a Sony handi-cam, then had CGI added on with an e-machine.

The Mummy Returns - the Scorpion was dreadful

And most of Matrix Reloaded had pretty terrible CGI, IMO.

*SPOILER FOR MISSION TO MARS****

That big red alien at the end was terrible

They're not CGI. They're stop motion. That's Ray Harryhausen's final movie. Stop motion effects never look real, yet they're still far more effective for some things then puppets or costumed dudes.

and the worst CGI I ever seen ... The Hulk.

You have got to see some straight to video movies.. Seriously.

The car crash at the beginning of Along Came a Spider is seriously some of the worst CGI I have ever seen, and I am very forgiving when it comes to effects shots. It just moves too damn fast, and the car has no weight, and it made me laugh. Also, the Scorpion King at the end of The Mummy Returns was pretty heinous - it looked more like a cartoon character than something that was supposed to look realistic. It would have been better to film the Rock from the waist up and then CGI the scorpion body - at least then half of the character would look real-ish.
