View Full Version : "A Movie So Terrifying...", my ass...

This is pretty much a rant that applies to this night, October 31, 2003, only. All month, Cinemax has been advertising a marathon of horror films to be aired today, with "A movie so terrifying, we can't say its name" being aired at 7 P.M.. Intrigued as to what it could be (they'd been showing THE EXORCIST recently, so I suspected that's what it was), I tuned in, and this mind-bogglingly scary, frightening, horrific movie Cinemax had in store for us was...

GHOST SHIP

Wow. GHOST SHIP. One of the most terrifying movies ever. Yup. I'll be watching Comedy Central if anyone needs me.

Just felt gypped and over-hyped is all. GHOST SHIP was okay, but IMHO, there's no call for its Cinemax screening to be shrouded in mysterious secrecy.

Wow. Major let-down. I think they were probably just trying to surprise everybody because that was the first time it played on cable or something (was it?)...who knows though? Whatever their reasoning was for shrouding this "terrifying" movie in secrecy, I bet a lot of people who were looking forward to seeing what it was are very disappointed.

Yeah, according to the schedule, it was the flick's first airing. It's set to debut officially on Nov. 11. When the Dark Castle logo came up, I thought it was a preview of GOTHIKA (which would probably be impossible, but it's a helluva thought), but alas, I recalled the music, and soon the title credits rolled.

Meh, Ghost Ship was alright, but it was a far cry from "terrifying". One of the local stations around here (CFMT) which spreads from Toronto has a sort of "during-commercial-breaks" type of commentary where the host talks about useless crap. Well, today was Halloween themed and she was advertising the top 10 scary movies to rent today, and Ghost Ship was numero trois! NUMBER THREE?! SCARY?! The Ring was number one, and I forget what was number two, but come on... I guess it doesn't take much to scare us Canadians.

Really? What store specifically Peepshow? I am also in Ottawa, and got shafted out of a good night of horror flicks. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the first 3 Halloweens, FT13th 1 and 2, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead 1-3, and all those were fucking GONE!

So I went home and cheesed it up with Spike TV's Friday the 13th Marathon.

Actually, Ghost Ship was number 2 - House of 1000 Corpses was number 3.

I know, as soon as I heard them say "Ghost Ship" at number 2, I loudly exclaimed, "YOU'VE GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME!" I kind of liked the movie, but it shouldn't be anywhere NEAR a "scariest movies" list.

Yeah, I remember hearing about this marathon...the only movie they showed that scared me in any way was THE RING, everything else sucked.

EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS and GHOST SHIP were both shown as "scary movies" when both are not scary and both suck big time.

If Ghost Ship is scary, then I'm Anne Heche.

That's hillarious, it can't say the name? Nice marketing! Ghostship was one of the dumbest, cheapest, not scary horror movies I've ever seen.Nice opening though.
One question, was it the original or the terrifying remake?

I was disappointed as well, and I thought Ghost Ship was a pretty fun little roller-coaster ride, but hardly "scary," but, hey, at least it wasn't Friday the 13th, Part II... :) And Ghost Ship isn't as unscary as the film that followed it on Cinemax.

It had the atmosphere and opening for a good scary movie, but felt empty otherwise. A few jump scenes and an eerie little girl were nice, but I need a little more to be terrified.

Hey, Friday the 13th Part II was total badass. Remember the bit where the girl wets herself? And that ginger dork who they leave at the bar and is never mentioned again? And the guy in the wheelchair who falls down the steps with an axe in his head? Yeah, exactly, I'll await your retraction in patience.

Ghost Ship? Scary? You've got to be shitting me. Im also pretty sick of every horror movie being labelled as "the scariest movie since the Exorcist" or the "Scariest movie since the Texas Chainsaw Massacre"when they turn out to be as scary as some shit Garfield musical halloween special. Like the Balir Witch Project. What kind of shit was that. It was like
"dude look at that fuckin stick"
"dude. What is this"
"dude we're lost"
"dude fuck this shit"
"dude where is Heather?"
"Im right here dudes"

Yeah it was SHITE.

You mean you're not?

Anywho, I must say that these people calling The Ring THE scary movie to rent are idiots. I mean come on! There are better horror movies than that!

Here are just a few off the top of my head:

Suspiria
Inferno
The Wicker Man
The Exorcist
The Shining
Dawn of The Dead

And if you want mainstream horror, Halloween is better than The Ring as far as scares go. I want these people to watch some of these movies and tell me which is scarier, watch Audition and try to tell me that The Ring is more disturbing...fuckwits

I understand it winds you up, but it is everyone's own personal tastes of horror. Me personally? The Shining didn't scare me at all, Dawn of the Dead I thought was a comedy, and yes I thought The Ring was scarier than Audition (which whilst creepy, was more out to shock than scare). The Ring isn't the scariest film I've ever seen by any means, but if people asked me what a scary rental was, I'd just say The Ring since it's an easy choice.

Interestingly, last night me and some friends rented some flicks at a video store and this woman was at the counter before us with her maybe 6 or 7- year old daughter renting a film. Which one was it? Yep, Ghost Ship. Great choice, lady.

Then again, we got Battlefield Earth.
