-Eternity and a Day (Angelopoulos)- wisdom, integrity and emotion; a film of memory and friendship (between a boy refugee and a dying man) that's touched by angels.

-Mulholland Dr (Lynch). Sensuous, erotic, macabre mystery that deals with dreams/illusion/reality and cinema itself.

-Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Ang Lee). Grand entertainment, marvellous locations.

-Rosetta (Dardenne bros). Stark unflinching realism, with a magnificent central teenage performance.

-At the Height of Summer (Tran Anh-Hung) Lovely gentle and beautifully coloured Vietnamese drama

-Far from Heaven (Haynes). Masterful take on the 50's

-Japon (Reygadas). Mexican arthouse daring.

-Spirited Away (Miyazaki). Involving artistry and fantastic animated invention.
