Since we're all focusing on the negative CGI that has been put out, what has been some of the best cases of it? How about the first Lord of the Rings?

Well, as much as I DIDNT like Lord Of The Rings: FOTR, I thought it displayed some of the best visuals I've ever seen.

To my knowledge, there wasn't any CG except maybe the slow motion bullets in the KKK scene.

What do you mean no cgi! Did you even see the movie. Some other uses was the car chase witht he cars flipping all over the place. Also the shootout right before that had tons of cgi crap flying all over the place to make it look dangerous.

The Matrix Reloaded.
But the Burly Brawl was just a total CGI crapfest. The rest was pretty good.

Jurassic Park for sure, For a 1993 film it still stacks up well today.
And all of the Lord of the Rings.

T2 still holds up even though they could only do short CG clips. I think like 5 seconds or so from what I have heard.

I admit not having seen it since July, but I've seen various making of specials about the freeway chase, and the cars flipping and such were real. They experimented with various speeds and conditions to get an idea of how certain cars would react in the same conditions in the chase. Cameras were implemented on the sides of cars and drove right by them for many great shots

In my opinion the best CGI ever was in Minority Report. The whole thing looked so real.

Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, and Minority Report are tops for CGI. Lord of the Rings does a pretty good job too.

Reign of Fire's CGI-Dragon's weren't half bad really, they blended in the background quite well.

Yes Minority Report is a good one.
I'd say also Starhip Troopers. Specifically the bugs.

Forrest Gump, T2, The Abyss, and Minority Report used CGI amazingly well.

I'm amazed at the lack of love for Forrest Gump. To tell you the truth, I first thought the special effects were clever editing techniques.

gollum and the fell beasts from lord of the rings two towers.
but those will be beat by shelob from return of the king, that thing looks real.
all the rest pale in comparison. :D

To be precise, in "POTC" when Jack Sparrow and Barbossa were duelling in and out of the moonlight in the cave. Beautiful. Simply beautiful work.
As one of my favourite movies, "Jurassic Park" also has this honor when the Rex breaks out of it's enclosure. Everything around it moves with it's movements, even the water puddles.

I agree. That one scene by itself is more realistic than every CGI "attempt" in JP3.
The best CGI to me though is in T2. Forrest Gump was impressive to be sure, but when you think of all the complicated sequences they had to create in T2 next to that one major thing in Gump, then I think T2 is the CGI centerpiece of the two.
I should give special mention to The Matrix Reloaded. Sure, the CGI was very noticeable at times, but you also have to take into consideration that the special FX crew was trying things that nobody has ever tried before. Not many movies have a fight with one person versus 50 Hugo Weavings in the same shot, an agent jumping from car to car while both are on the move, or a flip-crazy fight atop a moving tractor trailer. The end result on the effects probably weren't as good as they could've been, but for what they were trying to accomplish, they get an enthusiastic "Whoa" from me.

john Getta and his team on the Matrix Trilogy has the best work out there. They have the best human doubles (the burley brawl was fucking fantastic) and by far the most seamless cgi i have ever seen.
Gollum was pretty rad too.
ILM needs to catch up with the Jonses that is the Getta team and Weta.

Ill have to go with Gollum. He gave the best performance of the year, and he wasnt even real.

I should also give mention to the end of T3 where half of Arnie's living tissue is burnt off. Now that's good CGI.
