Is this list according to someone in particular?

And on a personal note, I've only seen 66 of these so I have a lot of work to do.

I've only seen 104 of them.

It's my own unsatisfactory effort to come up with a list that reflects historical importance, international critical taste, major polls, as well as public popularity. I was disappointed with the British Film Institute's list of 360 classics (which stopped at 1981), thought i'd try to do better. It's mainly an objective list, with a small number i've not seen, and a few personal favourite wild cards. I'd welcome opinions on most glaring omissions or undeserving inclusions- which every list will have.

Most flagrant omissions, if you ask me (in recent years): The TRuman Show and Requiem for a Dream. I think these two deserve to be there, while some others don't (*coughwhatthehellisuzakcough*). BTW, you don't need to include every single Angelopoulos and Kiarostami film.

Requiem for a Dream should have made it (left out by mistake) and Truman Show came very close- my enjoyment was ruined by watching it on plane in a storm. So useful comment, thanks.

Kiarostami is greatly admired by many, so deserves his representation, and i like the Angelopoulos films i've seen. Anyway, only a small minority of their films are here.

I've seen between 160 and 175 movies of the list (some I'm not sure because I confuse them with others, some i don't know because i don't recognise the titles in english). There are a LOT of obscure films, IMO.

I ask you again: What the hell is "Uzak"? Is it better than Lost in Translation (which looks like one of the most important films of the year)?

Uzak is one of the ones i've not seen, but i heard very good things of it from Cannes (about the only film that most there really liked from what i read). Anyway, it's Turkish. But i may have been premature with it- partly due to trying very hard to be fair to lots of countries!-I've already added the 2 you suggested. I should have included something by Wes Anderson, no doubt. Perhap The Royal Tenenbaums as loads of people are fans.

Hey, Kes is there so you're a-okay in my book.

Great effort though, one of the best lists I've seen in some time.

I'd like to have seen these superb flicks on the list.

Brighton Rock - John Boulting (1947)
Blowup - Michelangelo Antonioni (1966)
Naked - Mike Leigh (1993)

But it's a GREAT list.

A very solid list.

But where is are the first films ever, made in 1891?

I've only seen 64 of those movies.

I would've liked to see Network, Malcolm X, To Live, Eat Drink Man Woman, Roman Holiday, To Have and Have Not, The Night of the Iguana, and Gentleman's Agreement up there, but it's a SUPERB list nontheless. Keep up the good work!

Good suggestions. I did originally include Roman Holiday, but changed my mind. It's never possible to get these things just right. I did worry a bit about leaving out Network, which i know has many admirers- it's just that i'm not one of them. To Have and Have Not missed by a whisper (or a whistle). I was also trying to balance up the directors' representation. To Live (excellent) came close, might have been one too many by Zhang? Night of the Iguana hadn't occurred to me. I obviously need to see it again. Gentleman's Agreement hasn't aged too well, i think, and 3 by Kazan i thought was enough.

I didn't see Weekend at Bernies there....was that a mistake?

This is a GREAT list to work through. I've seen about 120 of them, which is far too few. Really pleased to see Kes, Trainspotting, Annie Hall, American Beauty, Cinema Paradiso...etc. on there. Lots of diversity...I applaud your successful attempt at making an awesome list.

That's a really good list. I was a little disappointed myself at the exclusion of Network and To Kill a Mockingbird. Other than that, it's damn good.

I'm grateful for all the positive comments. Though i'm not its greatest fan, To Kill a Mockingbird was an oversight and should have been included. It's a well-made, important film that still carries a lot of weight and remains extremely popular.
