In the peak of some of the best franchises in film history, i'm really starting to get pissed when people start comparing films that have nothing to do with each other...

Like

"The Lord of the Rings Trilogy has better action than the matrix trilogy"

Ok, these films are about as far off from each other as my ass and corn bread. The only similer aspect would be that they both have action in them.

And other examples are even worse, like when there is review of X-Men 2 and al of a sudden they say

"Forget Reloaded and The Hulk, this is the film to see this summer!"

Its not the most annoying thing in the world, i just like it when people see a film without a competetive point of view.

It seems that most British movies are the best British movie since the last moderately successful British movie.

So The Full Monty was the best British film since Four Weddings, Bend it Like Beckham was the best British movie since The Full Monty, 28 Days Later was the best British movie since Bend it Like Beckham... well, you get the picture.

Read reviews by Lance Goldberg. He can't write a review without bringing up some other movie. The guy is on payroll too.

How can you rate a film's quality without comparing it to something else? We gauge that GIGLI is rubbish because we compare to all other movies we've seen (not necessarily rom-coms about lesbian hitmen), but if GIGLI stood alone and we had nothing else to compare it to then maybe we wouldn't realise just how shitty it was.

That said, I understand what you're getting at. But it pisses me off more when two films are compared that have the same subject matter but are completely different films. Like someone might say NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is better than EVIL DEAD just because they are both zombie films, despite being completely different movies and going for different effects (Romero with his social commentary, Raimi going for gore).

I think it's ok in some circumstances, but when there's really dumb comparisons, that's when it gets stupid. I remember reading this one stupid post from another message board, (or maybe it was this one) where a poster said "Dickie Roberts is so bad, it's an insult to great directors like Hitchcock, Fellini, Billy Wilder, Spielberg, and Kubrick. Ugh." It may not be a comparison to a movie, but it's close enough. Now, I'm the last guy who'd ever defend a David Spade star vehicle, but I doubt you're meant to think that saying "2 for Dickie Roberts" to a clerk means you'll be expecting a tribute to those directors

The Godfather sucked. Not nearly as good as Lord of the Rings!

This Rant is as annoying as Scooby-Doo.

Ah, I'll take my sarcasm elsewhere.

the only time i like comparing movies is when a person tries to describe a movie and names a movie it reminds them of but I dont think its a good idea to use that compare and contrast crap when the movies are nothing alike.
