Murro Replacing Verbinski on The Ring 2 Source: Variety Tuesday, November 4, 2003
DreamWorks is moving forward with The Ring 2, hiring commercials director Noam Murro to helm the second installment of the horror hit, which Naomi Watts will once again topline.
The studio is preparing to start filming The Ring sequel in January, aiming to release the film in November, 2004.
Murro replaces Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl), who directed the first film, which generated $129 million at the domestic box office, and an additional $120 million overseas.
The sequel will bring back Watts and David Dorfman, as well as screenwriter Ehren Kruger. The plot is being kept tightly under wraps at the studio.
Murro caught the attention of DreamWorks executives with a darkly toned "Got Milk?" commercial he directed for the California Milk Processor Board that features a boy who can predict unfortunate future events.

Hmm...dunno the man's work, so I can't predict for sure how he might take over for Gore.

The first one has a neat story, and had some pretty scary moments. I wouldnt say its a SCARY movie bubt rather a GOOD movie. The thing I enjoyed the most was the camera direction, I love the shot of the dad and son standing in the rain. If they cant get Gore back, at least get a cinematographer that can emulate him.

This is interesting news. Although I don't really see the need for a sequel, except for monetary gain from the producers

Strange that Naomi has a major part in the second.
**spoiler**
The protagonist in the Japanese version (Nanako Matsushima) died early in the second movie.
Oh well. The Japanese version shits all over the US version anyway.

You're right, Ares, and what a shocking death that was! But The Ring 2 is an original sequel; it's not based on either Ring 0 or Ring 2 from Japan.
So this new director directed a dark and gothic Got Milk commercial. Hmmmm.....was the milk curdled?

The first movie wasn't that great, but Verbinski does have some Talent
i wonder what kind of shit they are gonna make up for this movie, and I doubt it will even come close to the 'praise' the first one got, altho i do believe it will probably make more money

I don't know really what to think about this news. Gore Verbinski crafted a tightly wound original that captured one's attention from the get-go. He, of course was working from a great script that gave the characters sufficient time to develop and create relationships. The film also was full of a brooding atmosphere that was heighted further by the countdown that would occasionally appear; lending a further sense of urgency to the proceedings. I am guessing that he wasn't hired back because he will be working on The POTC sequel and doesn't have time for The Ring 2. I, however, do not dismiss Murro right off hand. Many directors have come from music videos and commercials and created great films. A recent example would be Marcus Nispel, who directed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake after spending time directing music videos.

Did you just say Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) was great?
God I hope not.

It's not unusual that Watts has a big part in the movie, since the producers aren't gonna be following the storyline of the original sequels

This probably has something to do with the fact that Verbinski is going to be directing the new POTC movie and won't have time for The Ring 2.
I will still have to go and see it....sighs

I'm disappointed that Verbinski isn't returning, but with Ehren Krueger still writing and Naomi Watts et al returning, it'll still be a must-see for me. The Ring is one of my favourite movies.

I have to defend that the first one was ok, but should have been Rated R for the effectiveness it should have been. As for the second installment which obviously begged sequel at the end of Ring 1, too bad Verbinski original director is no longer attached. I just hope it wont turn into a lame n shitty sequel.
