More old school fighters
Floyd Patterson
Jake LaMotta
Tony Zale
Rocky Graziano
These guys were brutal and would stand toe to toe and just slug it out. I love watching old clips of these fighters (damn cable company took away my ESPN Classic:mad: ).
I think Mike Tyson has to be on this list regardless of what you think of him now. I know now he seems like some pathetic cartoon character, but in his prime he was the best.

My personal fave is George Foreman. His comeback and Tyson were the reason I started to watch Boxing in the first place.

I will be a Tyson fan until I die....but how can you argue with Marciano's record?

Well, you can't really argue with Marciano's record; he got out while still in front. A shame he didn't fight Louis at Louis' peak. With Ali, it's often forgotten that he was deprived of 3 years in the ring when at his very peak (and of course he went on too long). Foreman's comeback achievements only add to Ali's greatness. Tyson blotted his copybook too much to make the 10 but of course at one time he was terrifying and looked unbeatable.
Heavyweights get the main glory, but other weights shouldn't be overlooked. Jimmy Wilde is the forgotten man of British Sport and world boxing.

You may have never heard of him, but John L. Sullivan, the last bareknucle boxing champion.

He fights like a butterfly and stings like a bee...he's the champion of the world, he's Muhammed Ali.

Anytime I hear anyone talk about the greatest boxers of all time, I'm reminded of Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America" with all the old folks sitting in the barbershop.
"Anytime white folks get together and talk about boxing, they always gotta bring up Rocky Marciano." (Paraphrase)
4.Roberto Duran
Didn't Duran actually get beaten so badly by Sugar Ray Lewis that he started saying "No more" in Spanish?

Yes, the Ravens were off that weekend, and Ray Lewis beat him.:D Just kidding man, I know you meant Sugar Ray Leonard. Yep he cried "no mas" and it was over.
Getting to Rocky Marciano... (The old white guy in the barbershop) "He whooped Joe Louis's ass!" "He's right, the man did whoop Joe Louis' ass.":D

God damn subconcious.
Arguably, the list goes something like this for me, more or less:
1. Mohammed Ali - Cassius Clay was a scream even before he became Ali..."I'm the heavyweight champion of the world, I'm pretty as a girl, and I'm the greatest!" His fights were the stuff legends are made of. He is without a doubt the greatest of all time.
2. George Foreman - The old man sure as hell could box, even into his older years. He took Holyfield the distance.
3. A generation or two before my time, Jack Dempsey was a great fighter. Nobody could touch him. He pretty much set the pace for modern boxing.
4. Rocky Marciano was good for the time he was in. Another oldie but goodie.
5. Joe Frazier was a hell of a fighter. Ask Ali.
6. Evander Holyfield made boxing into a sport again. He put his mind and body to work every time he got into the ring.
7. Mike Tyson - Gotta give the devil his due. Iron Mike didn't go down easily. But several of his oppononents sure did. I'd hate to get nailed by one of those tree trunks.
8. Sugar Ray Leonard / Marvelous Marvin Hagler (tie) - they turned in a classic bout no heavyweight could dream of.
9. Julio Cesar Chavez - he has more heart than men twice his size.
10. Jake LaMotta loved his job. Kind of a sad story, but he was a great fighter.
Jeo, you left Lennox Lewis off the list but added Mike Tyson??? Don't forget Tyson gave Lennox 4 Million in 96 NOT to fight him and instead chose the loser Bruce Seldon.
Tyson lost to Holyfield. Lennox beat him.
Lennox beat Tua, V. Klitschco (destroyed his face), Hasim Rahman. Shannon Briggs, Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison, etc.
Who has Tyson fought besides Holyfield and Lewis who both wipped his ass? Clifford Ettiene, Peter McNeely, and soon to be some K1 bum in Japan.
Tyson is nothing more than a myth. :o
You're probably right, man. I never paid attention to his tomato can fights, but he sure did plow down the unknowns, huh? :p
Maybe in his heyday, years before Lewis was a big name, Tyson would have been willing to fight. I'm not one for specualtion, though.

Deadwalk:
You appear to be misinterpreting my comment on Marciano. You'll note i rate 3 heavyweights ahead of him, including Joe Louis far above him. JL fought Marciano when way past his prime.
Duran; i place him so highly, cos he was comfortably the first of the famous quartet (with Leonard, Hearns and Hagler) to be world champion, originally a lightweight, and for his performance against Hagler. Direct comparisons between the 4 based on their battles, without taking age, weight, other achievements into account, are misleading. I realised i was in error not giving sufficient credit for his earlier achievements and longevity when i once placed him well below Leonard and Hagler and had a think about why some others had put him in the all-time top 3.
