Ok, I'm gonna turn this into a small rant.

What the fuck is so tough about Pesci?! I'm not knocking you, blur, I'm just saying this in general. But is there ANYTHING at all intimidating about Pesci?! In all of Scorcese's movies, he's always considered the "muscle" of the operations. He's fucking 5'4 (if that) but he always seems to be bossing people around. For example, when Pesci slaps around his cowboy friend when he insults Ace in Casino. You can't tell me that that dude couldn't have fucking crushed Pesci. It's like the logic (or LACK of logic) surrounding the Child's Play movies. How could you be scared of a doll??!!! You just pick the thing up and fucking punt it. I'm not saying that you could pick up Pesci and punt him (though I'm sure it wouldnt be hard ;)), but seriously how strong could Pesci be? I know I know, they are just movies. But I never understood WHY Pesci was/is always considered a "tough guy".

Ok, I'm done. Carry on.

He's tough because he gets the shit done. I'd like to see you fuck with Pesci like Billy Batts did. He'll knock you out, put you in a trunk, stab you, and then bury you. Hell, he might even put your head in a vice or jam a corkscrew through the back of your neck. That, my friends, is tough. He's tough because he doesn't take shit from anybody, and will have you killed within three seconds. He may be tiny, but he packs a strong punch, and is very intimidating.

And it's not that he's strong, he's tough...a small difference, but a difference nonetheless in this situation.

When he's slaps people around it's like they never try and fight back. I never could understand why.

And Tommy could have NEVER taken Batts by himself without Jimmy's help.

I guess I see your logic. But it's just the fact that he doesn't take shit from ANYONE. He willing to do whatever is necessary to do the job, whether it be stabbing the guy in the eye or putting his head in a vice.Maybe he's not a tough fist for fist guy, but nothing is off limits when it comes to getting shit done.

Nice rant by the way though, you would have made Pesci proud!

I agree with everything that's been said here so far.

But to me, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart will always be the ultimate screen tough guys, especially in their roles of Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon) and Tom Powers (The Public Enemy).

I'm a bit surprised no one has gone with Freddy and Jason.

Particularly Jason, who has managed to survive several not-so-good sequels.

Great list!!

I'll add Foster's character, Clarice Starling, from The Silence Of The Lambs. It'd take a lot of mental toughness to let an ultra-violent, ultra-intelligent psychopath rummage through your mind, in order to enlist his help.

I think Mel Gibson's character in Payback, Porter, was one tough, mean, dirty sonofabitch. Survived a car wreck, 2 gunshots to the back, being hit by a car, a severe inquisitional beating, and hammer-smashed toes. If thats not tough, then breaking people's bones/faces, beating the crap outta big guys, and killing people inconsequentially oughtta put him on the list. I think any movie character would be hard-pressed to beat that record with the possible exception of Tony Montana, being shot many times and all, heheheh.

speakin of mel gibson...his role as skinner in million dollar hotel was a pretty bad ass kinda guy. i didn't like him much until the end, but to have to grow up with a third arm stickin outta yer back then dealing with the scars it left after it's gone...well that's just tough...
