The book is so...CREEPY. Extremely twisty, really well-written book. It's about two U.S. marshals who go to this island to investigate the disappearance of a mental patient from the "psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane" there in the 1950s...the thing is, weird stuff starts happening, etc, and the staff and people there seem to not be telling everything...

It's extremely effective, and though I had a vague notion of what the ending was going to be like, it still hit me nicely (although rumors are that the studio didnt' like the ending so they're changing it...it seems to make it more conclusive. whether or not they keep the ending in the book in or not will make a major difference in terms of the entire storyline...). And it works too...you go back through everything, and there are no problems in storyline terms...

the main problem i foresee for this is that it suffers the same trauma some other movies have in the past...i remember going into several movies in the past couple years and thinking they were awfully similar to another film and they end up turning out the same way (or roughly the same way). In this case, Shutter Island might suffer the same fate. I can think of at least two films already out in the past couple years that do something pretty close to what he does in this book, and these two movies were also why i sort of had a vague notion that kept nagging at me throughout my entire reading of the book. Still, of the three, Shutter Island is the most well done in terms of setup, etc, and everything else. It's also more emotionally attached in my opinion than the other two...

In any case, we'll see. I really want this movie to be good because this book rocks! Anyone else read the book or looking forward to this?

Btw, the info on this production came out around June i believe.

This movie is worth it because Wolfgang Petersen is directing it. Ever since I saw Das Boot, I made an oath to see all of his movies. The guy is a real talent.
