View Full Version : Rock music in horror movies

While I personally prefer a chilling classical score in horrorfilms, other kinda of music can also work well, but I've been sick and tired of hearing rock music in horrorflicks. It's not nessecarily a bad thing - Goblin's music in some Dario Argento films is great and a film like DEMONS that goes for entertainment than real scares - but hearing loud, aggressive sounds takes me totally out of the film. Even during the credits at the end it bothers me,
Recent examples: UNDERWORLD, when one of the characters is escorted in a policecar and suddenly this loud obnoxious music is played, which returns to haunt you once the end credits start. Same thing with FREDDY VS. JASON at times and also with WRONG TURN (although luckily that movie had it only afterwards).
Am I the only one who is annoyed by this or are there others as well?

I agree with you for the most part. I think it CAN work sometimes, but what I hate is when they try to be hip and play that nu-metal crap. If I hear "Let the bodies hit the floor!" in a movie trailer one more time I'm going to go nuts. *Watches The Punisher trailer and goes insane*

Yeah I see exactly what you're saying. As much as I love Resident Evil, it took the heavy metal route as well. I don't know why movie companies do that, nobody finds that stuff scary. I guess they want the movie to come off as "cool as hip" instead of going for the real chills. I cannot stand metal in horror movies and it's becoming scarily common.

Nowdays depending on type of film, rock music whether we like em or not will be shamelessly plugged away in a scence of a horror movie. Thats why there was a thread (points down in Music Forum) Q's on Haaaay Does anyone know what that music was being played in............
Most of them pertained to songs seen in a horror movie. I also have seen them in the horror forums and pop up on GMT (shame shame). Music featured also equals SOUNDTRACKS! Most soundtracks horror related only has a mere 2 tracks that were good and the rest I could do w/o. SO movies like Shadow of The Vampire and Brotherhood of The Werewolf (hopefully there was NO rock music bvecause I haven't seen this) you will be safe from Rob Zombie or whoever being cued up and scaring the living daylights out of you.

EVERY movie that is targeted to a younger audience will from this point forward have all kinds of misplaced music for one reason...
TO SELL SOUNDTRACKS.

That is indeed a good point, but it's the way that they present it in the film. They could easily play it softly somewhere in the background or only let it be heard when a character is switching radio stations.

Well, and this is not directed at you, today's younger crowds eat up that kind of shit. It sells. Look at shit like 2 fast...all you need are a couple fast cars, semi-good-looking people, and loud music, and you've got a hit.

There are still those of us out there who choose to buy score soundtracks rather than various artist song soundtracks.
I agree with this rant and I have another rant about soundtracks. I bought the Kill Bill Vol 1 soundtrack and one of the pieces I enjoyed was ruined by the yo yo yo storytelling of a Rap guy. Totally ruined, jesus christ!

From a money making standpoint, it makes sense, since soundtracks sell. Artistically, it's a crying shame. I'm no fan of horror movies, with my distaste aided when a rock song from whoever's at the top of the Billboard charts that week plays to no effect in a scene that doesn't need it.
Another thing that bothers me is rap music being used in European and Japan-set movies. Cases in point, The Transporter and the dubbed version of Black Mask

Rap music exists outside of America as well.

I know, but at least in the cases of the movies I've used above, I don't really think the inclusion of rap music works well at all

Fair point. I can definitely see how badly placed (or chosen) music can completely take you out of a scene and really annoy you, even if it didn't particularly bother me in The Transporter, for example.
rock music in horror movies, i dislike,--- alot.
that's what i think what made Halloween a classic.

I agree with you.
Halloween did have a rock song but it was not too loud and overpowering. It was just right and it was only one song and the rest was score and it is wonderful!

Without fail , the best way too go with movie music is instrumental . When they add lyrics it ruins everything , especially when as some have stated it becomes loud and obnoxious , it's pointless .
Now , i have to admit some films actually are enhanced by their use of rock music ( some of Argento's films and Demon 1 and 2 ) , but the genral rule should be subtle and atmospheric for horror movie music .
I also agree about Res Evil , that soundtrack became almost unbearable during the scene in Dining Hall B , when they discovered the zoms for the first time . Other than that , the music was just perfect .

Imagine Iggy Pop was played during a horror movie? Huh, I'd walk out. Well, shut my eyes and listen to the tune, then walk out.

Actually, he was on the soundtrack to The Crow: City of Angels. He was also in a starring role. I can't remember which was more frightening...;)
I don't know, I'm a huge rock fan and horror really is my favorite genre. I almost shit a brick from enjoyment when they played some rock in Freddy vs. Jason...it just gets me excited. Also, one of my favorite horror films, Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight featured Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot" (which is an AWESOME song) in the opening credits during the car chase. I thought that was pretty sweet too. But I love scores as much as the next guy, too. I think they can both work if used correctly. I know I'll be using a lot of both in my films.

Now that i think on it, the music was just a part of its utter crappiness. There were just too many wrong things about it apart from that...
