View Full Version : Joblo quoted on Comedy Central... for JOE DIRT!?

Fuck, first he gets plastered onto the back of BATTLEFIELD EARTH, and now this!
I saw a TV spot the other day for Comedy Central's premiere of the David Spade epic JOE DIRT, and The Man himself, Joblo, is quoted as saying the flick had "kick-ass tunes...", or something like that. But, if I remember correctly, Mr. Blo didn't really like the movie all that much (he gave it a 5/10 if I remember correctly).
Now, I know that critic's reviews get manipulated into sounding positive all the time, but shit, can't they ever quote Joblo for liking a "good" movie? Or at least one that isn't almost universally maligned?
Oh, well, at least us schmoes know the honest-to-goodness truth: The Man isn't insane. He just liked BATTLEFIELD EARTH, and happened to like some of the music in JOE DIRT.

meh...you know what they say, any publicity is good publicity. Unless it's not good. Then it would be bad publicity, but that's something completely different:D

Hell... I'd give a nut to get my name shown on Comedy Central.
Of course, it wouldn't be one of my own... but you all get the point.

Well, having your name being associated with a David Spade starring vehicle isn't really the best publicity, but it at least gets the name out there. People are gonna be curious, especially when the site name kinda comes out of left field, so it's a good thing. My take is that his name isn't used with bigger movies he liked, I guess because saying "Rolling Stones says..." and "Roger Ebert said..." brings more legitamacy or something. Now if they can quote Joblo for House of the Dead, and make it sound like a positive review, the guys at Comedy Central are damn good then

This reminds me of a Dennis Miller rant in which he said he could say, "I'd rather be in a gas chamber than see this movie again," and the studios would shorten it to, "...a gas!"

That's hilarious and I completely agree....although maybe I AM just a little insane. Here are some actual quotes from both of my reviews of those films, which also could have been used, but strangely...weren't... ;)
BATTLEFIELD EARTH
"Fun cheese."
"...a bad Star Trek episode..."
"...campy fun..."
"Don't bother seeing this movie..."
"...bring along a bag of farfetchedness..."
"...mindless..."
"...don't take it all so seriously..."
JOE DIRT
"...disposable film with lots of redneck and gross-out humor..."
"...little laughs.."
"...I would still slightly recommend it on video..."
"...what the hell were they thinking when they made this movie?"
"...a slow-paced dramedy..."
"I actually stopped waiting for the laughs about halfway through this film..."
"...goes on for way too long..."
And my personal favorite...
"...don't go out of your way to get it, since it ain't really all that good."
PS: I speak to studio folk every day who KNOW that our site and our reviews are read by millions of people a month, but who also tell us that it's going to take time for the higher-ups in their company to "change their old ways" and concentrate less on the 50-year old white guys who they've been quoting since the early 60s, and actually try to target their audience according to the type of critics that they like.
In the case of JOE DIRT, which obviously was trying to hit the "let's have fun with hot chicks and kickass tunes" vibe...heck....good choice on JoBlo.com! I'm really quite flattered. It would be nice to eventually be quoted for my real favorites though like FIGHT CLUB, DARK CITY, MEMENTO, THE OTHERS, AMERICAN HISTORY X, MAGNOLIA, AMERICAN PSYCHO, UNBREAKABLE, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, GHOST WORLD, ALMOST FAMOUS, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, FRAILTY, NARC, etc....

I know, I know, it was cool to see the site quoted and all, but I just wish that once, just ONCE, they'd quote you for liking a "quality" film.
As of now, everyone who hasn't discovered this site will only know you as "the only guy Warners could quote on the back of BATTLEFIELD EARTH." Believe me, it's true. I've met several people who've laughed at or dismissed my recommendations of Joblo simply because of that damn BATTLEFIELD EARTH quote.
Then again, those people are morons.
THEY LIVE.
WE SLEEP.

No, the commercial says "Joblo.com praises Joe Dirt for its hot babes, bitching tunes and a truckload of cameos". I watch Comedy Central all the time, hence, I see the commercial all the time.
