What follows is an e-mail I have sent to several UK film magazines in regards to my formely beloved LG DA-3520, I feel you should all be warned against buying LG products in the future:
On the 18th of August 2001 I purchased an LG DA-3520, one of those cinema in a box things, it cost the grand sum of £500, I considered this a worthwhile purchase because it was both an amplifier for all my other equipment and a multi region DVD player. Recently it developed a problem with white noise in all the speakers but most noticably in the centre speaker, I assumed this was due to the wiring which I had done wrongly, but to my surprise I learned that not only was it a common fault with this player but that all models with a serial number below 205 XX XXXX had been recalled due to this inherant manufacturers fault, my serial number being 106 XX XXXX I realised that I should have no problem in getting the machine replaced by LG. There was no such luck, LG argued that since my warranty ran out a week ago that the warranty company with which I was insured up to 2006 should fix the fault. I don't want them to fix the fault because they wont be able to, if it's a manufactureres fault then it will be un-fixable and I'll spend months trying to get them to do a straight replacement not to mention hundreds of pounds on telephone calls. Also since the models were recalled before I even bought my player, I feel a bit cheated in that I was sold a player (no selling fixed for sub £300) which they knew to be faulty, and not only that they fail to stand by their recall because of the time delay involved.Surely a recall lasts for the whole life of any of the players still effected by the problem? And LG did not do a very good job of informing me of said problem, even though they knew it occurred before I purchased the machine. So it appears that I paid £200 for the ability to listen to white noise when watching DVDs, as an extra feature over the newer models without the problem. So not only are LG admitting that they manufacture sub-standard goods, they are refusing to take responsability for said sub-standard goods, not a very good combination if you consider that they make everything from CDrw drives to fridge-freezers now is it? How can such a company warrant expanding in to several areas of electronics when they can't get one area right? So what is the aim of this letter? The aims are two-fold, firstly to get this off my chest and have a good moan about it, hopefully I feel a little better, and secondly to warn all consumers of electrical goods away from LG goods, do you want to end up like me in a years time?
