This is why I bring my walkman to the theater. To kill time...during the 7 minutes of endless commercials, the 15 minutes of movie previews I may be too familiar with, and if there's too many movie previews for that matter. It makes the situation less irritating.

I dont mind the previews, but the damn PSAs and "dont pirate" commercials and that new fragrance is really kind of annoying

i have nothing against the dont pirate commercials but the ads that run for 20-30 minutes piss me off, i get to a film at the time it says expecting it to start then and it doesnt, only once has a film started on time.....so now i get there slightly late so its nearly started by the time i get in
a couple of days ago i went to a 21:20 showing of Kill Bill but only got in at about 21:35 or 21:40, it was odd because the lights went down as i went in and i expected that there would be trailers but there werent any which i was pleased with

Would you prefer they broke up the movie with commercials DURING the presentation?
Just do what I do: if a film is planned for 21:00, get there at about 21:15 and you have less commercials to sit through./

But if its a new movie, and you can only go during prime-time showings, then you would end up with a shitty seat. Maybe in Osh-Kosh, Nebraska, this isnt a problem, but where I live, you have to get there about 20 - 30 minutes before the movie starts to get a decent seat. So, youre like there, at the theatre, almost an hour before you actually start seeing the movie you want to see.
I agree with the original ranter, these commericals SUCK!!!!!

Well whoop dee doo, Mr. TZA's-Suggestion-Isn't-Good-Enough-For-Me !!!!!!
Well since most of the people on this thread obviously hate people, then go during the week and avoid the masses of teenagers and drunks and sons of bitches that plague the theatre on friday and saturday nights.
Since I don't go and see many movies any more I don't mind getting there early and doing a spot of "mentally judging people for no reason" during the commercials, but a few years ago I would almost always aim to get there 15 minutes after the official start time and never had a problem getting a decent seat.

I think the commercials are annoying. They had one for forensic science a few weeks back that was funny. And they ALWAYS have some stupid ass 5 minute mini movie by the COKE REFRESHING WINNER that is always so gay.
If you go 15 minutes after showtime, than you are stuck with seats all the way up front. I always go to the movies on friday or saturday of opening weekend, and i get to the big flicks usually an hour b4 showtime.

Yeah I wasn't really offended, I'm messing about, but seriously if you guys go to a showing that isn't prime time then no one else will be there surely?! Weekend screenings = Hell (people are there, and people suck obviously).

seating is important, and thats why i wait until the film i wanna see has nearly finished its run before seeing it so i know there will be a good seat and then i can arrive slighly later so i miss the commercials but sit where i want

It's a disturbing trend indeed , and it seems as if it's getting worse and worse , with no end in sight .
Ah , i remember the days when an ad for the concession stand and a trailer was all that was in front of a film , now you have so much ridiculous junk it's a damn frustrating experience to go to the movies now , not as pleasant an experience as it once was . Now , some DVDs are being made with the trailers starting before anything else ( some can't even be skipped over , but that's besides the point ) . What the freak , now they want to bombard us with advertisements at home , on a product i own , and should have full control over .
I have a suggestion , either show the trailers and advertisements after a film is finished or list the actual time a film will start , not the time the advertisements will start . But i doubt that will happen , theaters love captive audiences , and they know people will suffer through some ads just so they don't miss the start of a movie , or maybe , if it's crowded , they want to ensure they even find a decent seat ( no problem for me , since i always go to the matinee ) .
Ah , the beauty of Demons 1 , the film within the film in that movie started as soon as the lights went down , i would love that , it's the way it ought to be . Plus it would probably cut down on the latecomers , who comein with a bunch of stuff from the concession spilling all over the place and want to squeeze by you .
Oh yeah , most of you probably already know , but if you don't want pop up ads , and you're using IE ( any version ) , just set security to high in the options menu , that will disable java and cookies . But to post on Joblo , you'll have to set it to medium again .
Having watched movies in the UK and the US (woo, I'm so international), I expected the situation here to be far worse than it was back home, but I honestly can't recall the last time I saw a commercial at our local multiplex (other than the anti-piracy ones).
Is it a Miami thing? An AMC thing?
Now, if you could all just stop showing adverts immediately after the opening credits on all your tv shows, I'd be a happy man :)

OMG I seriosuly cant believe you guys. I work at the theaters and if I hear one more person complain about commercials Im gunna break something. The movie starts at the time it says on your tickets!!! If you dont want to see the stupid commericials then come fucking later and quick complaining. I actually take that back, the previews start at the ticket time. Otherwise the commercials are actually something to watch instead of nothing when you come early. The again I can only speak for the Regal chain which actually has a thing called "The Twenty" and 20 mins before a movie starts that have tons of stuff, sometimes its worth watching.

Well, where I live, the movie does not start at the time indicated on the ticket. If the ticket says 4:30, that means that at around that time, 5-7 minutes of commercials start, followed by 12-15 minutes of movie previews (these I actually like to see), before the movie actually begins. So, despite the time indicated on the ticket, it will actually start as early as 4:47 or as late as 4:52. I think this is how it is with most theaters in the U.S., at least I'm wrong.
I don't mind this too much anymore. I'm used to it. I just slide on my walkman and kill those 5-7 minutes of commercials, same with the previews, if I'm too used to some them yet. Funnily enough, before that 4:30 or whatever time, there will be little slide shows on the screen, showing little tidbits about actors and the film business (Keifer Sutherland has 5 middle names, lol, who knew?/quotes from these actors/guess which soda will win the race!). These I like also and enjoy following them before the indicated time on the ticket.

Yes, I'd prefer that the movie be stopped at the most crucial moments of the storyline so we can see one them lovely TAMPAX commercials, and while you're at it, why not pimp off the film studio's logo at the bottom left of the screen and the cinema chain at the bottom right, and so that way I'll never be tempted to return.

It's no so bad now at my theater. I posted before that there would be 5-7 minutes of ads before the trailers and movie. That was generally around summertime. Now, I get around 2-3 minutes worth. I'm becoming suspicious that there are more and more commercials during summer, since that's when more and more movies are out for people to see.

If you guys in the states go up to the ticket window and ask what time the actual movie starts, rather than the ads - are they allowed to tell you?
Cause thats what we do here down under.

I've never done that before, nor would I want to. If I figured out what time movie would start (after the ads and previews), and enter the theater at the precise time, it would be harder to get a seat. That's if it is a new movie, like "Spiderman" upon its premier.
This is because the time on the ticket is the time the ads and previews start. If had a 7:45 ticket for, say, "Spiderman," and went in at that time, there would about 4 minutes worth of ads, then 12 minutes worth of previews, then the movie. So, the movie would actually start at 8:01. It's natural for people to be in the theater at most by the time on the ticket, so even if you figured out what time the movie would really begin, you might have hard time getting good seats.
This is why the ads and previews part of the movie experience is a torture. You may not want to sit through them, but you'll have to in order to get and maintain good seats. This is why I bring my walkman to the theater.

Same mantality here as well. Everyone tries to get the seats in the back or middle. I, myself, like to sit in the very back row if I can. It sucks as hell as when there's only room in the first front rows. In fact, that's what happened when I saw "Spiderman."

I have a mini rant associated with this.
I hate those stupid ads that go on forever, and also the seemingly endless bad trailers (most of them) that go with them.
So one time, I arrive at the theatre a little late for a show (5 min) and ask my friends whether we should go in now or wait for the next showing. I say to them "Well, the ads and trailers go on for about a half hour, so we're safe to go now."
From there, this old bitch who works at an entry level position at the theatre says to me "No they don't! They only last for a maximum of 15 minutes."
I had no idea why the hell she suddenly decided to jump in on my conversation but I said "Well, they were that long last time."
She was quick to reply, "No. That's not true."
And sure enough, we see our movie at the showing we came for, as sure enough, 30 MINUTES OF TRAILERS AND ADS.
Dumb bitch.

30 minutes worth of ads and previews? That sucks. Bad ones? That really sucks! I thought everybody saying that it was 30 minutes was an exagerations before. For me, the longest time, is possibly 22 minutes. At the worst times, there will be 5-7 minutes of commercials, then 12-15 minutes worth of commercials. It's especially worse when the ads are extremely annoying to sit through and if the previews either suck or I'm waaaay too familiar with by then.

"I want your BOD"
1. I have no problem with 10 to 15 minutes of previews, if that's all the theater plays. I like to see what's coming, as long as it has nothing to do with soda, clothes, some new product gimmick, etc.
2. If I have to get into line just to get a decent seat and/or a ticket, then chances are I'll have to sit in the theater during the commercials. Break all the shit you want, Delfonics. Most new releases now have lines for them where I live, which is a fairly podunk city, let alone a monster like Chicago, L.A., NYC, etc. So most people are forced to sit through at least a few minutes of slideshow and a few minutes of commercials.
3. To show up later and walk in front of people who are watching the previews or (even worse) the actual movie itself is rude and stupid.
4. I pay eight fucking dollars a ticket. Prices just got raised in NYC to ten (that's right, ten!) dollars a ticket. And yet I have to sit through ten or even fifteen minutes of shit I'm already ignoring on television because it's overplayed there?! What a bunch of crap! Fuck commercials! You go to theaters to see movies for the first time, not get innundated with more bullshit you went to the theater to avoid in the first place. That's just stupid. Theaters have sold out. Cinema is already one giant commercial for shit you can't have or afford. So naturally, let's do shameless plugs BEFORE the film. That might sell products to the patrons who just might not be pissed about the commercial in the first place.

I also am very pissed off that they have these ads before the movies but heres the top ones that really twist my nipples.
1. Theres a student film shown now sponsered by Coke, where they show Italians owning a theater and then they do the whole stereotypical mobster thing and make everyone scared in the audience except for one little girl, Geno the big fat dumb one tries to steal some popcorn from her and she slaps his hand. As if Italians dont have enough stereotypes already.
2. Theres one with 3 guys talking about "I bet you didnt buy your tickets from BlahBlah.com" then the guy goes and says "I bet that cute chick in the 3rd row middle did" then they go on and say "Wait thats a dude!" I sit in the 3rd row and in the middle, THAT BASTARD!
3. Theres a commerial with this guy looking in the mirror by his locker, saying "Hey good lookin how bout a movie" then they show the ugly ass big nosed chick from The Cat in the hat burger king commericial getting ready for a date.
4. The RIAA commericals. "Sharing is Caring! FUCK THE RIAA!"
P.S. Ill pay an extra buck if they take all the commericals off! I pay 7.50 for commercials?! I dont think so!

AKA a small city in CT.
But the tickets are truly insane. At a majestic-type gigaplex about 30 miles out the tickets are only $5 on matinees and about $8 or less on nights. Local, run-of-the-mill theater? $6 on matinees, $8.75 for nights.
And it sucks altogether. Small screens, terrible odor of old popcorn, and inflated prices for food and tickets.
