November 11, 2003 - When is a film that grosses $85 million in its opening weekend considered a disappointment? When you're Warner Brothers and the film is Matrix Revolutions, the third and final(?) installment in the popular Matrix trilogy.

While the film posted the third highest opening box office total for a Wednesday open, the studio expected the film to come in at number 1. The $85 million in box office receipts from Wednesday to Sunday fell well below expectations as did the $200 million internationally. Like most films in release today, copies of the movie appeared in various Internet groups just hours after the film opened, causing more concern for the studio.

Worried that the time to make money from the franchise may be running out faster than expected, representatives for Warner Home Video contacted some of the major video retailers and rental outlets on Monday to let them know that Revolutions may be coming home a lot sooner than expected. Early January was mentioned but if the box office continues to drop at its current pace, Matrix Revolutions could hit DVD before Christmas.

Adding insult to injury, a possibility was mentioned to one video dealer that the studio may try putting together a 3-movie boxed set for Christmas if Revolutions is released in time to show up in your holiday stocking. According to one video dealer that spoke to IGN FilmForce on condition of anonymity, "Warners is afraid that Revolutions won't sell very well because of the word of mouth on the movie. The only way to make the money on sell-through is to package it with the other two." The retailer went on to say that the number of requests for the film have dropped significantly since the film's opening day.

The big test for the film will be how it fares in its second weekend, when it will be up against the Russell Crowe starrer, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, a film that has been getting extremely positive reviews and advance word of mouth.

Representatives for Warner Home Video would neither confirm nor deny the information but a source at Warners did confirm that a meeting about the DVD release for Matrix Revolutions did occur on Monday. If the film is released early to DVD, we should be hearing an announcement within weeks. Stay tuned

Wow.. That would be, by far, the quickest release to video/dvd EVER!

This is nothing by good news for me.. Granted the third was not as good as the second IMO, I will still be getting this just because I did enjoy it...

I'll be getting it, but about Warner and the movie not making heaps, well overall they doi have high hopes..not everyone can understand or find the way the movies are made interesting and enjoyable. No doubt though, it will make heaps on dvd.

I think that this is a really smart move on their part. Due to word of mouth there probally wont be that many people seeing the moive in the theatres anymore. If the movie comes out in time for christmas then the sales should be really good. It is also good for us!

i think thatd be awesome if they released it on DVD before xmas... but a few things here worry me:

1) If they do a rush job on this, we wont be getting a kick ass special edition, we will be getting a rush job Bare Bones piece of shit release. No Double disk, means back to Snapperville for The matrix

2) They said they want to release it in a box with the other 2 Matirx films. Does this mean they wont be releasing it in single form? Because im not going to shell out 50 bucks for all 3 movies when i already own 2 of them.

3) When it comes to a movie as big as MATRIX, i dont think internet downloads have THAT much to do with it.. because that is a big ass special effects action movie, that can only be benefitted from the big screen experience.

Before Christmas?

I don't think it will fall out of theaters THAT fast.

This might be a good idea as the film is destined to likely drop to 4th this weekend and be out of the top ten one to two weeks after that.

Before Christmas sounds too rushed. I would rather have a March/April release.

um...im a lil confused y everyone feels this is gonna be a "rush job", "barebones dvd"????

wasnt revolutions filmed at the same time as reloaded????? didnt they finish it a while ago and hold it for a later release????

if i am correct in believing this, then that would mean that it will be a nice full dvd similar to reloaded?

please correct me if i am wrong!

Lefty has a point, and anyways most special features end up being completed before the movie is released at the theatres. Reloadeds special features were promotion features anyways, i saw most on tv b4 hand (preload etc).

There will be alteast 2 trilogy box sets i can tell you that now.

i already have the first two matrix movies on dvd, and it would be a real bummer for me if they released revolutions only as part of a box set.
