View Full Version : How come the American military never hire qualified people in movies?

So the other night, I made the mistake of renting The Core. Or as I like to call it, Armageddon-Light.

And it really woke me up to a decidedly irritating trend that seems to affect a lot of disaster/sci-fi movies.

How come the military NEVER has qualified people working within their own ranks? They always have to farm themselves out to some geeky college professor or some 15 year-old computer hacker, or (worse yet) the world's best deep-core driller.

It's no wonder that the world always goes to shit in these films. We apparently have nothing but a bunch of apes with name tags working at Norad.

I wouldn't mind this dynamic so much if it didn't seem to happen with whirlwind repetition.

I can only imagine what the next World War II movie will be like.

"Well, Commander the entire platoon was blown up just outside of Berlin. But never fear, we found a girl with one leg, a fat kid with asthma, an old man on a respirator and the world's foremost authority on cheese. Now, lets go give those Nazis hell!"

Ummmm.guys. They're MOVIES.

There are PLENTY of qualified military people. But that's not how to make a movie interesting. I speak from experience.

The actors whether faves or not, they do go the extra mile and hangout or work alongside whatever the role demands. Actors likes to potray a role that mirrors to real life. It's not that they are playing someone or something out of a paper bag. :D

If I steal that idea for a script, would you sue? ;-)

I'll cast veteran tv funnyman Tim Conway as Adolph Hitler and Robin Willaims as a goofball Joey Mengele....

Okay RB I am hijacking this thread for my own military rant.

Actually I thought you were ranting about the same problem I had so that is why I checked it out. But you weren't.

So time to take over this rant or at least add my two cents.

As a former Military Man myself I get so god damn tired of all the bull that is portrayed as militray in the movies.

Come on guys hire one ex-military guy from any branch and ask him at least one or two questions, it would make your movie at least look correct.

But I digress let me get to my beefs.

Number one: Saluting!

You NEVER salute without a cover on. For you non mils a cover is a hat.

All this saluting in the offices, etc. Bullshit!

No cover no salute.

You hold the salute until the higher ranking officer returns it. If he does not you hold it forever, or until he leaves.

I have seen countless movies that show the lower ranking dude salute and drop his salute before the other guy even gets his going.

A higher ranking officer does not salute a lower ranking officer! God how hard is this, get a consultant you movie losers.

http://www.cnn.com/2000/US/05/29/military.funerals/story.salute.jpg

This is a proper salute, arm parallel to the ground at a 45 degree angle, fingers together at the brow. Notice he has a cover on his head!

Here Hollywood use this picture you will not even have to hire a consultant!

Another thing is they always wear their uniforms terribly unless it is a big budget flick that can spare 5 bucks for a dude that used to be in the service to take a look.

Oh god and the hair, this is especially bad on TV shows.

In the military you cannot have long hair! If it is touching your ears you have to cut it, and it does not droop down over your eyes. The only exception is women.

For me it is one of those little things that can totally take you out of the moment. Because it is so glaringly wrong.

My wife thinks I am insane for yelling at the tv but any military TV show or movie that cannot get this right looses a couple points right off the bat with me.

Hey...exceptions that prove the rule. ;) Besides, aren't both of ya former military guys? You had plenty of time to get smart after leaving the Army... :p

Kiddin'. My best friend's a volunteer soldier, and I respect anyone whose ready to put on that uniform and go out and do what's gotta be done.

ARMY!

Them's fightin words!

I was a Navy Man!

But props to all the Servie Men and Women, of all Branches.

And I agree they get some lame-o's a lot of times to play the military types.

I guess it's too much to ask that Hackman or R. Lee Ermey play all the military roles.

And they are getting better now but what the hell was up with all those movies depicting submarines with 10 foot ceilings!

Das Boot that was a sub movie.

And no I was not on a sub, I'm straight!

I was an Airdale, yah like that word is mock proof.

And what is with the trend of all these futuristic military movies showing men and women in the same locker/shower/quarters situation.

I don't care how progressive we as a species get, there would be a whole lot of screwing going on if that was the case.

Hey baby we may die tomorrow. ORGY!!!!!

And a personal pet peeve of mine, okay one of the many. Is how Navy men are shown wearing what is called the Dixie Cup, or the White Hat. Hey I didn't name this crap.

This is proper way to wear a Dixie Cup.

This is not!

Sorry Bruce I love ya big guy but cut that damn hair and pull that cover down sailor!

Okay I'm done.

Hahaha, this paragraph makes me laugh.

How come the military NEVER has qualified people working within their own ranks?

The Bureaucracy. They have all their trained guys working in the wrong places, so they end up hiring some non-Military person to do the job that someone somewhere was trained to do, but they can't find in the time needed.

That element of your rant is pretty truthful.

It's annoying to see a movie not understand the rules in the military and only a couple changes here and there can improve the realism of a movie if only they friggin' had ONE PERSON help out on little facts of military knowlege. I have lots of military friends, and they always get pissed off at the little errors in movies, and I learn a lot just by their rants. HAHAHAAHA!

It's just like when I see a movie where someone's playing an instrument, and they don't even know how to hold it right. Like, a guitar player putting their fingers on the neck without even attempting to LOOK like they're playing what the music is playing. That pisses me the hell off. So I understand the annoyance.

Now, I have to take issue with the example that leads this rant off -

The Core....

Come on. The Core was missing lots of things, but I think writers were needed more than military. That movie is a logistic nightmare.

Okay, so I've never seen it.

OMG that was funny.

I have never seen it as well, but I'm sure the dramatic character development more than makes up for the other flaws that it has. ;)

This thread remids me of STARGATE!

All the military brains in the world and some joker figures how to open the gate with MINIMAL effort in no time at all.

And then he gets to go with them! Wouldnt they send thier own team of scientists or at least a backup scientist or something?
