i just recently got a copy of this movie after years of curiosity...and now it seems that when i'm not watching it, james dean is calling to me "meghan...you know you want to watch me again, go ahead, get the tape and watch me again" (he did the same thing with the poster and calander). now...i'm wondering... are there 2 versions of this film? one color, one black and white?
i must say that towards the end when james dean yells "I GOT THE BULLETS" that has to be the strongest line in film history, it was like he yells it and everything just stops...

A top notch flick. Really important for its time, with a lasting sense of honesty, despite the dated language. The subject matter (pride, love, angst, lonliness) all hold true even now.

8/10

It's a powerful performance with a picture perfect performance by James Dean. I don't know what else to say, except that it's a really good movie.

8/10

As far as a B&W version and color version, I only know of a color version. It was gonna be filmed in B&W, but they decided to change it after a few days into shooting

It is good that it was color, since the color of James Dean's jacket plays a role in the plot, and it would have been less clear in B&W.

Good film. Not quite great, but good. Dean gives a great performance. 8/10.

One of my favorite movies. Extremely important film of the 50's with a completely flawless performance by James Dean. I don't know of a B&W version, but the movie was beautifully shot in color. 10/10

Great movie with a great performance by Dean. The DVD has some cool footage of the black&white version.

There is no b&w version. Only a few scenes were shot in b&w before the studio decided it had a more important film on its hands than they initially imagined and decided to shoot in color.

Great movie, btw. I didn't really like it at first, but the second time I saw it really pulled me in. I loved Natalie Wood's performance in particular. Around 8/10 I'd say.

James Dean is dreamy.

I detect a hint of necrophilia. ;)

It is a great film, but I never heard of it being shot in B&W up until the studio said to do it in color.

A great film, with a great performance by one Mr. Dean. Amazing on its first watch, but I found the re-watch value to be slightly low, for some reason. Still an amazing, touching film.

It's pretty good, but Nicholas Ray's best is JOHNNY GUITAR, by miles.

I liked it. As others have already said, it's not great, but it's very good. Too bad about what happened to James Dean, though.

Brilliant picture. I think teens can still relate to this film, I know I can. James Dean's performance just gets better with age, too. An important, brilliant picture.

Dean, Woods, and Mineo were excellent in this one. It easily sits in my top 50 of all-time. I'd say the only complaint I have is the ending. It just didn't seem to fit for me. Other than that, brilliant, and has one of my favorite scenes of all-time: Who's chicken? at the cliff.

one of my favorite parts is when james dean is laughing at his dad after he drops the tray of food...james dean just has this awesome smile going for him (didn't much care for giant...he doesn't come off good as looking old) i'm gonna watch it again tonite before i go to bed...hopefully for xmas someone will buy the dvd for me :D
