What is the point of buying movies on dvd?
In my opinion ther is no point of buying movies on dvd. I think you should only buy the movies you give a 10/10 or a 9/10. I know a lot of people that when they buy a movie they only watch it three to four times and then never watch it again. So I think buying a movie you give less than an 9/10 I think it is a waste of money. what do you guys think?

It's true that I usually only buy movies that I give a 9/10 or a 10/10 to, but to say that people only watch their DVDs 3-4 times and never again would be unfair. I'm sure some people do that, but then there are also people who really love the movies and watch them frequently. I've owned a copy of the Criterion Collection DVD for Do the Right Thing for 5 months now, and I've watched it maybe 15 times since. Plus DVDs are great because they have a lot of extra features (some of them, at least), and I for one will give in to buying a movie that I gave a 7 or 8 to if it has really good special features.

So while some people waste their money on DVDs they'd be better off just renting, there are many people who watch them a lot, or collect them as a hobby. They're not a waste of money to those people.

Aside from the fact of being able to watch your favorite films anytime you want, it's really a collectors thing. Why do some people collect stamps (will they ever actually use them for postage...no), or why do people collect coins (will they ever spend them...no). Not only do I buy some of my favorite flicks on dvd to watch them over and over, I also buy them to collect them.

I buy movies on DVD that I give a rating of 8/10 and above. And I watch them far more than 3 or 4 times. They are something that give me joy and are my hobby. It's no waste to me.

you hit the nail on the head there

the main reason i buy dvds is because they dont wear out like VHS, i can watch them whenever i like, pause then, stop them, wind them back to watch a scene again without damagint them

i also agree there is no point getting a film unless you enjoy it a lot and are likely to watch it a number of times

It's a addictive disease. I rank it up there with Crack. There should be a law.

Sorry gotta go, Best Buy has a 2 for $20 sale......

Just say NO, DVD is WHACK.

I'm on #314.

I was going to put a link to Saruman's "DVD is addictive" thread, but I can't find it. :(

Vega's right about why it's good to buy DVDs. We may not watch every movie we have 100+ times, but it's great for collecting, and the feeling that we can watch it anytime we want

I've seen my copy of Attack of the Clones 30+ times. No joke! I kept track.

I only buy dvds that I either:

1) Know are good and would like to see them again

2) Know are good and would make a nice spot in my collection

3) Look interesting

I've only bought 1 dvd that is total crap (xXx) so I've faired well.

You can use the same logic on VHS tapes.

It's cheaper. Rather than rent a film you like but don't own several times a year at Cockbuster, setting you back $40 or so, you can smack down $15 to own it and play it whenever you feel like it.

There are only two films in my collection that i hate, but they were both Christmas gifts.

I want people to walk in my room and look at my bookcase full of DVDs and say, "WOW!"

It's the ultimate feeling.

Or else you get to feel the power of their pity that you've spent so much time on your dvd collection. Either way it's a great feeling.

If I loved a movie I'll spend bucks for the DVD; so-so films I buy cheaper on DVD. I have VHS I won't upgrade because it's worth the cost to upgrade these movies.

The more movies, the better. Never know when down the road you'll feel in the mood for a film you didnt like that much to begin with. I have been running into that problem later. The bigger collection, the better. That way I don't have to worry about renting. I hate renting movies and then not being able to keep them.

because it is a collection. Some people collect stuff... i collect dvds!
I dont buy movies i give 9/10 or 10/10... mainly because i dont rate movies! Its eithr good or bad!

I also buy DVD's because i am a student of filmmaking, and the Behind The Scenes documentary's that are more than POS Fluff pieces provide GREAT in depth information on how to make a film.

i buy movies for the collecting aspect and because if i rent a movie twice i could have just about bought the movie. not to mention if yer brain dead like me and forget to return the movie on time.

I can't talk for anyone else, but here's why I collect DVDs-

1. I've been a movie fan since I was a toddler, and they hold endless entertainment value to me. Especially with all the extras.
2. I love having a library of my favorite, and heck, even not-so-favorite films and TV shows to fit my mood. I may not watched each of my DVDs over and over but they're there whenever I want to watch them.
3. The collector mentality. It's just cool to have shelves of DVDs, it's a collection that you can actually get use out of.
4. DVDs don't take up much room and they're very aesthetically pleasing. You can display them in a room in a neat fashion and not have them look ugly or imposing.
5. Why not? :)

Your point is valid. I own a bunch of movies I doubt I'll ever watch more then once or twice anytime soon - many of them I bought simply because that was the only way I could see them (imports, mostly). The money I'd get for selling most of them nowadays (they were more valuable when I got them) is so miniscule, I don't think it is worth it in the slightest.

Looking through my collection (http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=lartrak) , I count 28 movies I've seen more then 4 or 5 times. Of course, around 50 of those I got in the last year and a half. I'd say around 60 or 70 of them will end up being viewed semi-regularly over the next few years. The others will get pulled out for company, or not at all.

Also, I own about 10 DVDs I still haven't watched - some unopened. In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's case, that was because I saw it several times in the theatre and a couple times at other peoples houses, as well as renting it before buying it. In other cases, I just haven't found myself in the mood yet.

It's always nice to have options anyways though.

I collect movies that I like. I don't rate movies. It's you like them or you don't. Money issue? I think paying about $15.00 for a dvd is fine, compare to paying $15.00 for two at the movies and watching the movie only once. I've watch many dvds over before just like movies on tv. Keeping tabs on how many times you watch a certain dvd is not my lifestyle. It's entertainment and a collector's way of enjoying the movies. I also love movies and enjoy watching them when I want to. One day my friend wanted to watch a new movie that he never saw before so I invited over and I put it on in my home theater and he brought over beer and we sat there and enjoyed the movie. Renting issue: You pay $4.23 for rental/about $15.00 to buy new....If I know I really want the movie I will buy it.
