View Full Version : Flops and Hits in Movie History
Damned Martian

Similar to my other thread of 2003 (I'm a numbers nerd, what can i say? :D)
The take is: what movies have been successes and what movies have been bombs at the B.O. in movie history?
Rules:
1) Just movies that have ended/are ending their theatrical careers worldwide (obvious rule in this particular thread)
2) Take into account the WORLDWIDE B.O.
3) Take into account not only their budget, but also their marketing costs, if they're available (in boxofficemojo.com you can find lots of them)
4) Consider that the money that the studio gets from the B.O. of a movie is around 55% of its worldwide total. The rest is for distributors/exhibitors. (source: the-numbers.com)
5) Type of movies:
Disaster: almost all its budget lost in the end
Bomb/Flop: near half its budget is going to be lost for the company, even with video/DVD
Failure: won't get to broke even eventually, but loses won't be too drastic
Land of Nowhere: it will finally broke even thanks to video/dvd
Moderatedly Well: it will get some benefits thanks to the video/DVD run
Success: some benefits from its theatrical run, more thanks to video/DVD
Hit: benefits are near to what was its budget on theaters alone
Blockbuster: more than the double of its budget of benefits from theatrical run

Because it was the movie everyone had to see when it came out. The book was extremely popular and movie's 3 year long production was covered by the media unlike that of any movie before it. So when the movie finally came out (November 1939), everyone wanted to see it. It has nothing to do with no competition (only with being better than the competition) and little to do with cheaper ticket prices.
I think what comes out even more amazing than its adjusted gross is its adjusted budget of 25 million (though I've always heard its budget estimated at 5 mill. not 3.9). You couldn't even get a movie of that size off the ground for 25 million today!

You couldn't even get a movie of that size off the ground for 25 million today! I was impressed by that too. Even being $5 M, its adjusted budget would be just $32 M!! That makes it a profit of $1.34 billion instead of 1.35... not much of a difference ;)

Town and Country was a gigantic bomb and I wonder why New Line even bothered to give it a theatrical release when a direct-to-video release might have made a decent amount on its own and saved them money on prints and advertising.

The Sound of Music: $79 M profit --> Blockbuster
Brazil: $9.5 M lost --> Flop
