Premise - Kurt Russell stars as coach Herb Brooks in the story of how the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team toppled the seemingly invincible Soviet Union squad to capture the gold medal. A former U.S. player himself, Brooks was the last skater to be cut from the 1960 U.S. Olympic team, the most recent one to win the gold medal before Brooks became the team coach. He cobbled together a group of players and taught them to excel at the European game. Even so, the Russian team had won four consecutive gold medals and was so good that it defeated a team of National Hockey League all-stars. The U.S. team wasn't expected to even make the medal rounds. But led by Brooks, the team defeated the Soviet Union in the semifinal round, then bested Finland in the finals to win the gold.

This looks like a real inspiring movie that I'll be sure to catch in theatres.

There aren't enough good hockey movies out there, and I have a feeling this one might actually join that short list of decent ones. Russell seems pretty well cast, and the story is great in itself. Hopefully they don't fall for the biggest "sports movie clichés" in the book, or at least all of them.

I'm a big Russell fan as well, but this trailer made me want to vomit. From the shameless patriotism (jingoism really) to the cliched story points (yes I realize it's based on a true story but this is Hollywood), I really don't feel the need to see this.

So, what, a "true" Kurt Russell fan would like every movie he is in and say nothing critical about any of them (or their trailer)?

But that's how it was. Their success brought the nationalism out in the American citizens. The movie is supposed to be very faithful to the real events, so what you are seeing in the trailer probably is how it happened.

Kurt Russell's presence is the only reason that I would see this since everyone already knows the outcome before going in, I see little reason to see such a movie unless the performances are great.

With that philosophy you rule seeing a lot of films. May I ask why? So you know the ending, it's like that with many films. It's even like that with any movies made from books. Why?

First off, it's not always that way with movies made from books because the ending is often changed for dramatic effect or to leave it open for a sequel. I mainly apply that philosophy mainly to true story films from Disney, such as The Rookie which I did eventually see but no other company makes more predictable films than Disney. I tire of uplifting true stories from them in which the ending can be seen a mile away. I can almost guarantee that Miracle will end with the team winning a hard-fought game and then celebrating as the screen fades to black and then there is a note about the memory of Herb Brooks, the coach, who died in a car accident two months ago. I saw Radio, not a Disney film, and it was fantastic, much better than The Rookie.

You have a good point about the ending, but what I'm saying is that uplifting and feel good movies can be good regardless of the studio. Sure, we know how it ends, but chances are it's going to be a very good film. Give it a realistic shot.

UGGGGGHHHHH. Its Mighty Ducks and Remember The Titans. What a boring preview. Cant wait for the moment requisite "Miracles can happen, we got to work together" speech. Hopefully Russel will enliven this film.

even as a kurt russell fan, and a hockey man...
the trailer didnt get me going at all...
i liked the return of kurt russell's hair from his way earlier movies, like the computer that wore tennis shoes....
someone referenced this movie to a mix of mighty duck and remember the titans....
i dont see where they saw the connection...
i guess a quick way to judge...
im kinda relieved that this is pure dramatic and not so in comedy..
russell is definitely going to have to have a trick up his sleeve to make this movie work.

Before I get started, I want you to know that I do not mean this in an egotistical or cocky way at all. The American win over the Soviets in the 1980 Olympics is still considered to be the biggest upset in the history of international hockey. It arguably ranks among the biggest and most shocking wins the sports world has ever witnessed. While I am sure the 1972 Summit Series was great hockey, it didn't have the shock that came with the 1980 Olympics. There wasn't anyone in the world who truly thought the Americans would stun the Soviets in this David vs. Goliath type of match. I am obviously American and therefore somewhat biased, but I honestly believe that the game of the 1980 Olympics is more deserving of a movie than the 1972 Summit Series.

Here's a better way to put it: The 1980 Olympics is the American equal to the Canadian 1972 Summit Series. Just as you guys still talk about it the Summit Series up there, sports fans down here still reminisce about the 1980 Olympics.

You've never heard of the Summit series? Hmmm... Moviefan is right, it's essentially the Canadian equal. Educate yourself:

Just checked out the poster, and.... YEECCCH. Don't get me wrong, Kurt is indeed the man and I do want to like the movie, but what a bunch of jingoistic RAH RAH American ballyhoo. And the tagline... "If you believe in yourself, anything can happen"???? God that's awful. They're going for the whole inspirational true story angle, but what a lame tagline.

I guess the Summit Series will probably never get made into a inspirational ooey-gooey patriotic claptrap true story because.... well, it's not American. And the Americans are obviously the best at that.

The Russians game? What the hell is that shit? Hockey is a Canaidan game. And sure the Americans love their shining moments, and because they beat the Russians in 1980 they are the best hockey players ever. BAH! Summit Series is the best moment in International Hockey...unless you count when Canada handed the States their asses in Salt Lake

And yes, at the time the Russians had a better team, hence why they made it to the finals and Canada did not...for the record, Canada is the hockey nation, let us at least have that...I mean you have Basketball, Football and Baseball, must you rob us of our hockey too?
Either way, this is a better idea for a movie than another Mighty Ducks...

Again they show the whole movie in the trailer just like Seabiscuit. I like Kurt Russell and I don't mind the occasional cliched sports movie, if its done right. But the trailer couldn't have been more bland and cringe worthy if it tried. From the coach returning for one last shot at glory, to the players who can't get along, to the locker room speech before the big game. The voiceover, the tagline, inspirational 'united a nation' crap, everything was blah and it's all been done before.

I remember this game. I remember this year. I live one town over from Mike Aruzzioni and it's big time hockey country.
And I'm going to go see this with a big box of kleanex. It's probably going to be emotionally manipulative and trite, but you know, feel-good "based upon" stories always are. If the stories themselves weren't sappy and over the top nobody would want to make a movie out of them.
I loved Seabiscuit. The book was better, they took a bit of license (though not much) and it was designed to get to me emotionally. Know what? It did.
I'm looking forward to this sob fest!

This looks alright, I'm not sure about it though. It looks like it may be way overly patriotic from the ads, however I know the whole story so I think i would be fun to see it. If it's good though, it will be a fitting tribute to Herb Brooks, the team's coach who died last summer.
By the way, the US Hockey team beat the USSR in the Semifinals in the 1980 Olympics. They still had to beat Finland in the finals to win the gold medal.

Exactly. What makes this such a great story is that we were supposed to be eliminated in the first round. Nearly every game we won was an upset. We were a bunch of kids in their early 20's beating professionals. Amazing story. The more TV spots I see for this, the more pumped I'm getting for it. It really seems like a great patriotic story.

i saw Miracle last night.... and all i can say is that it is amazing.... although i wasn't alive in 1980... i'm sure this movie captured the most important parts of this event.... Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks is just great... Herb was a hardass... and in some scenes... you'll notice.... the camera angles are just SWEET.... and the actors portraying the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team were dead on with their New England accents. The movie is one of the best of the year... the theater i was in was PACKED for this sneak preview... whenever the Americans scored against Russia... the theater erupted and people jumped out of their seats.... the movie proves why this was the greatest moment in the history of United States athletics. 10/10

Not only is Kurt Russell a capable actor, but he's involved in hockey in his personal life, which could add to his performance.
On the short side, it's produced by the Disney Co., which can only hurt in the telling of this classic hockey story.

I was kind of hyped up about this movie before. Now? Well, check out what James Berardinelli(one of my favorite critics, along with, of course, JoBlo and Arrow :)) said about Miracle in his "ReelThoughts":
I get requests from curious movie-goers asking whether it's worth the effort. In this case, the short answer is "yes," especially if you have interest in (a) hockey, (b) the 1980 Winter Olympics, or (c) the "Miracle on Ice." Anyone not falling into one of the above categories will view this as a feel-good, underdog-triumphs sports story. It's not great art, but it's about as good as mass-market motion picture entertainment gets in the dead of winter.
So there you go.
It's based on one of my favorite hockey stories ever, but the film looks too corny and sensationalized. I won't see it...
