View Full Version : I never saw the appeal of...

What sport do you just NOT see the appeal of? Does it utterly STUN you when people watch golf for hours on end? Perhaps you shudder at the thought of watching people run around and then use big sticks to throw themselves over high bars?
What's your most appallingly dull/stupid sport?
I don't know if this has been done before, you sports schmoes and your wacky thread titles ;)

A lot of the summer Olympic sports such as swimming and gymnastics, I don't see the appeal of. I can appreciate the skill it takes to compete in those events but they seem boring to watch.
Curling too, of course. Deadly boring to watch.

The one sport I find incredibly boring is.... I know the European schmoes love this too, soccer. I'll say it again soccer, soccer, soccer! I don't know, the field is just too big and not enough action occurs for my tastes. I've heard certain people say baseball is boring, but at least you get the thrill of a one on one matchup, head to head competition. Does anyone else find it ridiculous that after playing the long regulation of soccer and ending in 0-0 tie, the game is decided by a series of penalty kicks. Why not just do this to begin with? I might watch then.:)
Well if you'll excuse me I have some "American football" to watch.

I wholeheartedly agree! SOCCER is deathly boring to watch. Low scoring to a fault, and I prefer to watch a defensive American Football game than high octane offense! But SOCCER is dull, and I have only ever seen the appeal to play, but not watch.

Actually it usually ends a draw after 0-0 and everyone goes home or shop. No penalties.

I can get into nearly any sport, and there are a lot of them that I just love to watch. But it's difficult to get me pumped up about soccer, golf, and Nascar. That's if you can consider Nascar a sport.

Actually, I'm fairly certain there are penalty kicks in tournaments and playoffs.
The World Cup, for example, is decided with penalty kicks if the score remains tied.

I have never been able to see the appeal of SOCCER. "Im running! Im kicking a ball! Im running again! Kicking...again!"
Just dont get it.

Indeed. Guys run for three seconds, get knocked down, continue running, throw balls around for eight seconds, it stops again, yadayadayada, I could care less. Boooring.

Yup. American Football highlight reels rock -- because they're spectacular. But a full-length match...booooring.
I'd have to go with cricket too, though. Helps that I don't understand shit of what's going on, too.

When I was in Lodnon this summer, they had one of those all-day Cricket matches on one of the Sky Sports channels, so I started to watch part of it, and through my American eyes, it just didn't make sense! A tenth of an out? Fours? Sixes? And why do they have all those fielders that do nothing!
And unless it's the final holes of a major championship, I just cannot watch golf on TV. The announcers are always so self-righteous, the players take forever to hit the ball (Sergio Garcia, this means you!), and it seems like an eternity when you watch it.
I also don't understand the appeal of Ultimate Frisbee...

Agreed!
Soccer is where it's at, baby. I don't watch it nearly enough but it is so choice. All the cool kids are watching soccer ;)
For the record, I don't get Hockey, Amer. football, golf or cricket.
I can deeply dig, however, the highly underrated here in the states Soccer (American Football's awesome younger brother who everyone likes better) and Rugby (American Footballs' cool older brother with better players and more friends).

If find it hard to watch any sport the whole way through a match, whther it be football, soccer, baseball, basketball or whatever, i get bored easily... but the one sport i hate is probably rugby

Everyone is hit on all my least favorite sports (soccer, Nascar, golf etc...) but I have to speak up in defense of curling.
On the extremely rare occasion that I find this on tv I find myself completely transfixed to the television only because this has to be the oddest fucking sport ever created.

Sports is sports. It's the competition thing. I'll watch caber-tossing if that's the only competition on TV.
But I do hate soccer.

The only time I find Curling on TV is at the end of February-early March. I didn't know too many Americans were into Curling. I don't mind Curling.
I can't understand how they score Cricket. I see it periodically and see the scoring summaries periodiacally and I still can't understand it.

Ach. Terrible sport, if you ask me.

I used to think baseball was boring until I moved here, now I can't wait for the new season to start.
Watching curling becomes strangely hypnotic sometimes, especially during the Olympics.
Golf and horse racing, however, I just can't work myself up over.

:( Bummer to see the lack of love for soccer, but each to their own.
It's actually rare to see a 0-0 draw these days, and that's before even contemplating extra-time, golden goal, and penalty shoot-outs to decide matches.
Anyway, I've never seen the appeal of oval racing, whether it's in NASCAR cars, or Indy cars, or whatever.
Round and round they fucking go
they stop for gas, and slow for yellow.
They don't break hard, they don't turn right
they make it a fucking boring sight.

Soccer-I enjoy playing it,but I can never watch a full match on tv,but thats the way I am with most sports I'd much rather play than watch.

GOLF!!
Most boring sport on the planet to watch. The only remotely entertaining part of watching golf is when people get pissed off and start throwing their clubs in anger. But I got that from Happy Gilmore, probably doesn't happen much in the real sport.

Hehehe, yeah that doesn't happen much on the PGA Tour.:D I've seen guys do it on the local course though, it is hee-lair-eee-us. I like when they throw the clubs and they stick up in trees and they can't get them down.:)
Another so called "sport" I don't see the appeal of is rodeo.:( Riding bulls and tieing up calves just doesn't suit me. Not as barbaric as bull fighting, but I still don't like it. The girls that race horses around the barrels for the best time is alright, but the rest is not for me. Blech!

God YES!!
I have this psychological hatred of golf from when I was a kid. Golf was the signal that the cartoons on Saturday morning were OFFICIALLY OVER. Nothing pissed me off more as a child then seeing a golf game announced after my Smurfs!
And BORING as sin. In the words of George Carlin, "It's like watching flies FUCK."
And yes, NASCAR too. What is the damn appeal of watching rednecks drive in a circle really fast for more then an hour?
NASCAR sucks.
Men's soccer swallows.

Oh, and golf & NASCAR, for reasons that have already been said by electriclite.

NASCAR is lame, and yes I'm one of the few guys in America that finds Football extremely dull and boring, like Arto J said guys running, knocked down, game stops, continues, boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrring. Soccer and Golf are both boring to watch but I have fun playing both.

My sentiments exactly. But try being the only person in your family who doesn't like football, and you live in the heart of Packer Fanatics country. 'Tis tons of fun.

Golf is the obvious one but I could never understand how someone could become fascinated with bowling. I mean I like bowling and everything. It's pretty fun. But not fun enough to take it seriously as a sport. Ha ha. It's funny how bowlers are stereotypically fat slobs though. LONG LIVE KINGPIN!! Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Golf for me too; I love watching soccer, American football, baseball, hockey, basketball, etc.
But golf, both watching and playing has never interested me, and I've never seen the appeal. I'll watch highlights, but that's about it.

I can't honestly say that there is any major sport that I really dislike on it's merits, but I am puzzled and saddened by America's uncritical love affair with the NFL, a game that cripples far too many of the people who play it and is populated by a lot of real scum like Ray Lewis, Rae Carruth, Mark Chmura and Christian Peter.

When something wrecks its entertaining, and im sure its a thrill for the drivers, but i dont get that sense of speed from my TV. To be honest, i think its the only "sport" ive ever watched that can put me to sleep.

I went to the Pocono 500 last year because my former boss was a big Nascar nut. I mean the first few laps were pretty cool but after 250 I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to watch this entire thing. THEY JUST GO ROUND AND ROUND! Just tune in to like the last 20 laps or so. That's all you really need. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Basketball. Just doesn't really get me since you get called for a foul for hitting your pinky on the other player's wrist, pacing is too slow unless they are in the paint.
Baseball I can watch a full game during playoffs only, but other than that it gets old fast.

I respect every sport because of how difficult they all are. However, respect is different than enjoying. Aside from the obvious ones mentioned, I'd like to throw UFC into it. It's just a fight. There's no art to it, very limited athleticism required. It's a brawl, and while that might be entertaining to some, I feel it's essentially paying to watch a bar fight.
