Posted in Joblo's movie news:
Wow, how's this for impressive?! The rumor mill was swirling this very week as to whether Michael Gough would return as Alfred the butler in Christopher Nolan's BATMAN. Some sources said yes, some said no. Well Nolan is looking to show just how serious he's taking his version of BATMAN (and how different from the previous films as well) by ditching Gough and getting one of the most revered actors working today; an Oscar winner no less. That's right folks, Michael Caine will star as Alfred in BATMAN. Caine just agreed this week to star and a deal is being formalized as we speak. Caine is the first bit of casting since it was announced Christian Bale would star as the Caped Crusader. Unfortunately for Caine, he's got a great role in this film but he's also attached to that turd MISS CONGENIALITY 2. Caine was most recently nominated for an Oscar for his role in TEH QUIET AMERICAN and has won previously for THE CIDER HOUSE RULES and HANNAH AND HER SISTERS. It's really amazing how well everything is going on Nolan's BATMAN. All the decisions seem to be right so far and I'm getting really nervous. Nothing ever works out this well! The least of all superhero films at Warner Bros! Filming is scheduled to begin in February for a summer 2005 release so expect even more casting news as the year winds down.

These are wonderful news. First, Christian Bale, now Michael Caine. This is really getting my atention. And with Christopher Nolan on the helm, certainly this will be a movie to see more than once; certainly better than that movie: "bat and the bird"... If only summer of 2005 could be closer... sorry about Michael Gough, he's a terrific Alfred.

Great choice, I really hope they change Alfredīs carachter so it looks more alike the Alfred from the comics, an ex-actor who went to war as a doctor and who had to take care of Wayne Manor because it was family buissness and not because it was his dream to become a butler, wich was the feeling Michael Gough always gave me.

To me, this is bad news. I have nothing against Michael Caine, but I actually liked that fact that, despite other changes, Michael Gough remained constant. There were different directors, different Bruce Wayne's/Batman's, and different tones in the movies, but there was always Michael Gough. I'll miss him. I wonder if Pat Hingle (Commissioner Gordon) will be back.

Doubtful.

Theyre restarting a franchise from nothing. Theyre redoing everything.

Michael Gough is probably too old to do much on the set anyways. He's done, time to move on, bring on Caine!

Caine is a nice choice, but I prefer Gough, no matter what his age, he is the only actor I can truly picture as Alfred.

Excellent casting choice, in my opinion. Michael Cain is a spittin' image of who I picture as Alfred. Nolan sure knows his stuff.

As much as I liked Gough - I'm all for making a completely clean break from the films that have come before...

Well, I think Michael Gough deserved to keep the part if he was up for it -- he was in all four Bats movies, and he was the one actor to stand his ground FINE in each and every one of 'em, and he is truly the man I picture when I think of Alfred Pennyworth.

Having said that, if they have to change, they difficultly could've done better. Michael Caine is the right kind of guy, he looks the part, and he can play virtually any part.

So far...I ain't complaining. :)

Both actors are great. Quite a surprise the news is, but still good. However Michael Gough, you will be missed.

Gough hasn't been in anything since Sleepy Hollow, he could use the paycheck. Besides, something will feel awkward without Gough in the role. As fine as Caine is, Gough's grandfatherly role always warmed my heart and he was the saving grace of Batman and Robin.
