The Eight Best of 2003 (http://www.epinions.com/content_3647250564)
Prefuse 73 One Word Extinguisher A: Scott Herren has created a masterpiece of glitch, jazz, hip-hop and funk with his second release under the Prefuse 73 alias. It’s electronica with soul; a heart and a poignancy nearly unheard of in the genre is found at the core of the jagged electronic beats, that as if with magic form some of the most unbelievable melodic hooks of it’s kind. There’s the constrained urgency of the title track; the more conventional hip-hop route on “Plastic,” an insult to all things mainstream, as well ridiculously powerful detours such as “Choking You” and “Storm Returns,” all making this a strong argument against detractors that electronic music is indeed music.
OutKast Speakerboxxx/The Love Below A: After the success of Stankonia, Andre 3000 and Big Boi of the most creative hip-hop outlet in the mainsteam have delivered a set of two solo albums that are ambitious and brilliant. Andre takes the Prince route, instilling a thick funky feel on nearly everything, while Big Boi continues the work of the duo’s previous efforts by crafting a masterpiece of more accessible hip-hop. “She Lives In My Lap,” “Spread,” and “Dracula’s Wedding” from Andre’s The Love Below are astounding; hooky, entertaining and brilliant, while “Ghettomuzick” (featuring both members), “The Rooster,” and “Bowtie” from Speakerboxxx are all just the same. And of course there’s always the singles; “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move,” two of the greatest hooks of the year adding up to two of the most worthy successes of 2003. Who said hip-hop sucks?
The White Stripes Elephant A: This fourth album has the power to convince former detractors that The White Stripes are here to stay. A more accessible, but no less unconventional record, Elephant follows White Blood Cells without any problem, being another brilliant blend of genres and styles; completely bold and memorable. From the best single of the year “Seven Nation Army” to Meg White’s first lead vocal performance on “In The Cold Cold Night” and the awesome “Fell In Love With A Girl”-esque “Hypnotize,” The White Stripes fulfill all their ambitions, with fantastic songwriting, originality and heart.
Massive Attack’s 100th Window A: If One Word Extinguisher doesn’t convince you of electronica’s importance, Massive Attack’s most electronic effort yet could certainly do the trick. Stripped of every member with the exception of Robert del Naja, "3D" and having the difficult task of following the modern masterpiece Mezzanine, expectations couldn’t have been set very high, although they certainly should have. It is indeed just the opposite of what it could have been, as good as its predecessors, being a fantastic collection of poignant, lengthy masterpieces featuring such names as Sinead O’Connor and the staple Horace Andy. “Future Proof,” “Small Time Shot Away,” and “Antistar” show the incredible talent of 3D and end up sounding like mesmerizing pouches of emotion and power while everything else also hypnotizes and stuns. Simply unforgettable.
Goldfrapp Black Cherry A: Nodding to their brilliant previous effort Felt Mountain only on a rare occasion, this sophomore release from the trip-hop duo is an awesome array of the 80’s, sexy synth pop and vocals to die for. It works as a complete opposite to it’s predecessor, calling listeners to dance rather than lull them to sleep, notably on the Kylie Minogue-esque “Twist.” “Strict Machine,” “Tiptoe," and “Crystalline Green” are memorable; exciting, brilliant and unforgettable, while “Hairy Trees” and the title track are the strong threads connecting Felt Mountain and Black Cherry. Not as brilliant as Goldfrapp's previous creation, but still an absolutely unbelievable album, making it clear they deserve more attention.
Kill Bill Vol. 1 A: The best film of the year is supported by this; one of the best albums of the year. Featuring everything one could want on a compilation album; this is both a brilliant companion and a stand alone musical extravaganza.
Erykah Badu Worldwide Underground A-: A soulful blend of funk, jazz and hip-hop, Badu has created an EP with mesmerizing heights. She takes a step away from her previous album, and delivers something completely different; a possible preview of her next full length album. It hardly feels like an EP, with 10 tracks, all of which are layered, deep and memorable such as the single "Danger" which is a showcase of brilliant songwriting and a genius hook, making it one of the greatest pieces of music of the year. "Bump It" is sexy, while "Back In The Day" is nostalgic, and everything in between makes it impossible to deny the talent of possibly the greatest soul artist of this time. Worldwide Underground is a blast from start to finish.
Tricky Vulnerable A-: Tricky recovers from the messy BlowBack with his 7th studio album, an astonishing mix of pop, rock and electronica that is his most musical effort since his groundbreaking debut Maxinquaye. It's pop is what BlowBack should have been, original and enthusiastic, rather than flat and embarrassing, and its female vocalist Costanza is a worthy heir to Martina Topley-Bird, with a voice that oozes vulnerability, but still sounds sexy and mature. "The Love Cats," a Cure cover, is a highlight; a claustrophobic masterpiece that transforms the cute original to a sex song, while "Antimatter" and "Stay" are perfectly enjoyable and well-written alt-pop masterpieces. A slip can be excused when it's followed with as awesome an album as this.

www.pitchforkmedia.com are having there lists stapled up at the moment... the top 50 singles and the top 50 albums. The top ten singles are out today, top 10 albums will be tomorrow (although there was a leak/ - Chutes too Narrow at 7 - 4. Radiohead Hail the Thief 3. Sufjan Stevens - Michigan 2. The Books - The Lemon of Pink 1. Rapture - Echoes).
Top 10 Singles are as such
10: The Roots [ft. Cody Chesnutt]
"The Seed 2.0"
[MCA]
09: 50 Cent
"In Da Club"
[Shady/Aftermath/Interscope
08: Kelis
"Milkshake"

07: Dizzee Rascal
"I Luv U"

[Touch & Go]
05: Junior Senior
"Move Your Feet"
[Atlantic]
04: The Rapture
"House of Jealous Lovers"
[Strummer/Universal]
03: Justin Timberlake
"Cry Me a River"
[Jive]
And so, after years of whining about the horrors of the teen-pop era, the detractors got their wish: It came to an end! But, ahh, there was a devilish twist: the production of teen-pop records would screech to a halt, but its biggest stars would retain their ubiquity and force the world to admit there was more to them than questionable good looks and choreography. Justin came out on top, effortlessly laying claim to Michael Jackson's long-abdicated throne, beating the rockists at their own game, and becoming America's most debated, disputed, hated (and loved) pop star.
"Cry Me a River" is his finest moment to date and a brave final act of his tabloid > music life. On this creepy, multi-layered gem, heartbreak makes a vengeful JT ignore the high road and instead reveal his scars and faults. For Page Six and People Weekly, the track may have been a mere volley in the wake of another celebrity breakup, but long after it's become inconsequential whose betrayal Justin is lamenting, every sumptuous nuance of this post-teen-pop Timbaland symphony is still stuck to all corners of our heads. --Scott Plagenhoef
02: Beyonce [ft. Jay-Z]
"Crazy in Love"
[Columbia]
01: Outkast
"Hey Ya!"
[Arista]
"Hey Ya" broke-through, crossed-over, or whatever Billboard term you want to use, like no other chart-topping song since "When Doves Cry". Every race, nation, age, creed, musician, and political party adores the song. Black and white. Jews and Palestinians. Muskrats and snakes. Thurston and Mandy Moore. They all got down. You can approach pop music as cynically as your indieness mandates, but "Hey Ya" is a monument to the idea that a really fucking great song will blow up because it's really fucking great. Mind-blowing, then, when the track sounds very much like a home recording by a guy with a couple guitars and keyboards.
Fulfilling the purpose of all great pop, "Hey Ya" introduces new slang into the vernacular. Better yet, "Shake it like a Polaroid picture" works on a dancefloor, and nowhere else. We're not stuck with a "Show me the money" or "Who let the dogs out?" There's been debate on some music boards frequented by the readers of this site over the intended purpose of music, singles, and the collecting of such. Side A holds true to the idea that music is a unifying cultural force that holds meaning only in context of who it reaches and brings together. These people erect mashups of Kraftwerk and Whitney Houston. Side B believes music exists for music's sake and a idealized, context-less listening experience-- an artistic outpouring meaningful only in its outpouring. "Hey Ya" gives the A Bomb to Side A. --Brent DiCrescenzo
--------------------
I like that Thurston and Mandy Moore line in the review of Outcast. I put Outcast and JT reviews up because I thought that's what most people would be interested in. I disagree entirely with 50 Cents position on the list, I think rubbish is rubbish (and pitchfork seem to be getting off on including mainstream stuff) but the list is agreeable for the most part.

I Luv U, Cry Me a River and Hey Ya! are my favourites from the list.
I refuse to sit pretty with the notion that Timberlake churns out generic pop pap...simply aint true IMO.
Like him or loathe him (as most appear to do - Ftr, I don't) he's a cut above your average pop tart.
I'm not going to attempt a top whatever list but here is some new stuff I liked this year.
Kings Of Leon: Youth and Young Manhood
The Darkness: Permission to Land
Pretty Girls Make Graves: The New Romance (a real grower)
The White Stripes: Elephant
Audioslave: Audioslave
Jet: Get Born
Evanescence: Fallen (I was shocked I liked this one)

Ok folks. Not that you care but I have my list of best of 2003 here.
Top 10 music of 2003:
10. Stacey's Mom by Fountains of Wayne
Yes I like the song a lot. This was mainly because I heard the song before it was whored out on the MTV channels and such. I'm sure that if it wasn't as big the song would be loved by many(including some haters) but it got the success it deserved. Humourous lyrics and one hell of a catchy beat make a nice song overall(although that video is disturbing as hell-Stacey and the other kids look like they're 10. If Rachel Hunter wasn't in there I would think I'd be breaking the law watching parts of that video).
9. Hey Ya! by Outkast
The song has a frantic pace and seems all over the place at times but it is a great song none the less. It's no wonder this became a big hit since it is catchy and would get anyone dancing to the tune. Outkast is one of the best modern rap groups/artists out there right now(to me) mainly because they like to take rap into new directions. Although this wasn't exactly making rap original it's a good song anyways and proves who the real talent in Outkast actually is. I hope the two don't break up still since their best stuff was from them(although I like the song it is not one of the best)and wish them good luck.
8. Loosen Your Hold by South
I haven't seen one of the worst musical instruments(banjo)used in a song I like until now. I tend to like these kinds of songs where it is all calm in the verses and changes paths in the course. This one does it too and that is most likely why I love the song. Plus the violins which I love. Just listen to it. Good song.
7. White Flag by Dido
Possibly the biggest surprise of the year for me since I have always hated Dido. Whenever I heard her I turned whatever it was playing off. Although this song came along and I lurved it so much for some odd reason. Her voice was good this time to me and the piano is great(although I love almost all piano tunes)along with the little bit of guitar. There is other stuff on the song I like also like the sparkle noise as I call it but yes it is a good song and I don't care what anyone says!
6. Fallen by Sarah MacLachlan
Another one of the "big surprises" for me since I act the same to Sarah as Dido but this song popped up and I loved this too. It just flows together nicely and has some great violins(if that's the instrument used-I think so). I especially love the violin at the part when she says "I have sunk so low." My dislikeness for MacLachlan stays but I love this song anyways.
5. Into Your Hideout by Pilate
First off that guitar note they loop over and over at times is what made me like this song mostly. It just sounds really good for its simplicity of it. I love it. Plus the drums and other instruments work with it well along with the voice. The video is odd though(it looks like it was shot frame by frame even though it wasn't). Although it was very traditional in doing a song it still has that awesome guitar loop and instruments. Actually the instruments are the real thing to listen to in the song.
4. That Great Love Sound by The Raveonettes(tie)
THE catchiest song of 2003 and I'm sure of it. This song was stuck in my head for months and is one of the only songs where I have the lyrics memorized this year. The voices have this oddness to them that I really like and flows with the music nicely. The music is awesome too and is why I have this here(even though that's the main reason why I have all of these here on the list huh?)mainly. Just a catchy catchy song.
4. Inertiatic ESP(Son et Lumiere) by The Mars Volta(tie)
I HAD to mention this band on the list since it is my favourite band of the year. The first song I heard by them was Drunkenship of Lanterns which I didn't like much. This was the second song I learned and is what got me into the band. The song just starts out nice and calm but goes insane. Then it goes calm but goes insane and finally calm. The calm parts are great especially the beginning with the synthesizer they used(it has to be a synth). Although the insane parts are.......well...........INSANE! The guitar goes absolutely nuts along with the drums and the singer screams and everything. It was nothing I ever heard before but I loved it. Plus the alien sounding voice was awesome too. Get this song any way you can. It'll blow your mind.
3. Mouthful of Love by Young Heart Attack
I think that one quote from a review sums this up. "Sounds like AC/DC and Led Zeppelin with the B-52's as backup singers." Although it does sound odd the mixture produces one of the great bands of 2003. With them being the opening act for The Darkness now I only hope good comes to them. They kick mighty ass in rock.
2. I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness
This song came out of nowhere for me. I only heard of them by Psychocandy's talking of them on the boards but was never interested. Until now. This song is plain FUN from beginning to end and the guys really love their old rock tunes. Even though they will be a quick flash here in North America(like almost all Brit imports)I hope they'll get good in the UK. Has anyone else been screaming out GUITAR! after hearing this song?
1. Danger! High Voltage by Electric Six
DANGER DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE! My GAWD I love this tune so much. This should have gotten big in North America. It should have. But it didn't even though it was super awesome. I got the song from seeing the wacky video and just played it over and over with each time the song being louder. It is the party song of 2003 and the best dance song of 2003. The trumpet, guitar and everything else is so perfect in this song. If you don't love this song you must be mad! It is so damn catchy and addictive. Just listen to it NOW!

I'm sorry Lynn. I wanted to but the Aicha kid was giving me too many potentially homosexual stares so I had to give in. I'm so sorry.

My fave album of the year and quickly becoming an all timer is Matchbox Twenty - More Than You Think You Are
a few other faves...
Anthax - Weve Come For You All
Marilyn Manson - The Golden Age of Grotesque
HUGE Dissapointment had to be the new Machine Head album, whick stinks because they started out so well then changed gears to a more "pop" sound, only to never recover from it.
