The plot: The unluckiest man in Vegas - a guy whose bad luck is contagious - is used by the last of the old time mob run casinos to kill high rollers' action. That is, until he falls in love with a cocktail waitress and gets "lady luck," which throws the situation into reverse. Things turn nasty when the casino director tries to break up the romance.

Starring: William H. Macy, Alex Baldwin, Maria Bello, Shawn Hatosy, Ron Livingston, Paul Sorvino, Estella Warren, Joey Fatone, Ellen Greene

The Cooler sneaks into cinemas amid heavy competition. It's got a solid cast and an interesting if not dynamic premise, but where's the buzz? And is the Vegas backdrop played out? Sin City rivals the Big Apple for overexposure in television and movies; "CSI" is TV's top drama, and already this fall we've got the plots of Looney Tunes and Intolerable Cruelty leading there. Did Vegas become cliché after Swingers? (What was the last decent movie set in Atlantic City? Don't tell me it was Wise Guys. C'mon, Jersey film commission - get crackin'!)

Comments on IMDb generally praise the acting more than the movie itself, with the stereotypical characters (like the hooker with a heart of gold) generating the most complaints.

The Cooler opens November 26 in limited release.

The Cooler wasn't quite as good as the sum of its parts. It has good acting, an engaging love story, an original plot and some intense violence...but somehow it felt like a lowgrade True Romance more than anything else. Overall, it was highly fun....however, I don't forsee becoming one of Macy's best overall films.

7/10

The Cooler looks like a good and interesting film. I doubt it will play near me though, and if it does, I most likely wouldn't go see it because I have other movies I need to catch up on. I will give it a rent though. I'm predicting a rating of a 7/10 (B). The poster is pretty cool though, and will probably end up being even better than the movie.

The Cooler seems to be one of those films that I enjoy, but at the same time I find reasons not to like it. I'd like to view it on DVD for the simple reason of William H. Macy.

I really want to see this film. I'm sure it's not going to be so good as to enter in my top20, but it seems entertaining, interesting and well done.

I saw an advanced screening of this movie and I enjoyed it. Alec Baldwin plays a REAL son of a bitch. One of his best performances in film so far, I'd say. The best one still goes to Glengarry Glenross in his cameo.

"The Cooler" deals with luck, misfortune, love, conflict, yearning for a better life, feeling stuck in a rut, and overcoming obstacles.

Solid flick.

7/10

My theater is actually getting THE COOLER this weekend, I wish they would have gotten MONSTER instead. If they're going to get THE COOLER, they should have gotten MONSTER, or 21 GRAMS, or something!

Considering you live in Minnesota, I'd recommend taking what you can get. They may not be getting the 2 movies in question (which are still in very limited release), but The Cooler seems to be a solid movie, and seems to be worth taking a trip to see.

I really wanna see The Cooler, if only because I'm a sucker for dramas about people working for shady Las Vegas casinos

It's expanding to the theater I live by on Friday....I'm gonna try to cram it into my busy upcoming movie weekend.

I know what you're saying. When a limitedly released movie like this ACTUALLY does come here, I almost feel like it's my duty to see it and feel guilty if I don't, even if I'm not dying to see it. Yet, even though I think THE COOLER looks good and like a solid 7/10, I just don't really want to see it in theaters. Well, I sure would if I lived closer to the theater, but living an hour away, it's kind of hard to see everything. That's why I usually only see the ones I'm dying to see, and the ones that just look good I have to wait to see on video.

Did anyone go see this? I caught it tonight and its a solid flick. I was little turned off by the odd hybrid of romance and crime (well it seemed odd here at least) but the ending is very fun and fitting to the story.

THE COOLER - 8/10

Yes, I feel for everyone when they say they live in small places that have theaters that don't get anything....I live in Iowa for god's sake. The worst place ever...

I am lucky to get any movies at all. I usually have to download or wait for movies to come out on DVD.

Grr, sorry, I am very bitter about where I live.

On a better note, I really want to see The Cooler, William Macy is one of my favorites. Solid actor.

Boy was I ever disappointed with this flick-and I didn't even have expectations. It was just....blah. 5/10 at best...not a very great flick at all.

Thought the ending pushed the idea of luck a little too far, but it was a good movie overall.
