I wasn't a huge fan of the first film in this trilogy, but loved the second (which heightened my anticipation for the third). I doubt I'll see this in theaters, but I will definetely see the final chapter in the trilogy THE RETURN OF THE KING.

I have the FOTR EE DVD but there is nothing like seeing it on the big screen, so I will be there.
The EE edition is much more powerful than the original version and if it can be that good thru my TV I can only imagine the impact it will have in a theater.
So I will be seeing both FOTR EE and TTT EE in the theater.
I have avoided seeing TTT EE becuase I know I will be seing it soon in the theater.
Too bad I was not able to get tickets for the one day marathon but my ass thanks me.
If you have never seen the EE of FOTR or TTT do not miss it now. They are much better than the original versions and I thought those were brilliant.

Thompsoncory, if you haven't seen it already, I'd recommend seeing the EE for the first movie, since it improves the first movie to a large extent. On the big screen, it'd only benefit it, but at least on DVD.
Meanwhile, the EE of Fellowship is one of the few movies to get a 10/10 from me, but I won't be seeing it in theaters

Thanks for the tip ;). I've decided to rent the Extended Edition, but my anticipation for it isn't high.

I didn't like the extended edition. It didn't have enough more story for my liking. It just seems to drag on.

With a handle like Saruman you could be tarred an feathered for a comment like that!
On a more serious note.
I thought the EE edition fleshed out things nicely. Especially since I have read all the books and the Silmarillian.
But to each his own. But be looking over your shoulder for that lightning bolt brotha!

Ugh, I had to sit through the 3 hour version(s) in theaters, I am NOT wasting my time and money on this horrible shit.

For me , i can't say i prefer either of the four editions of the first two installments over any of the others . I enjoy something about all of them , and i think they are all terrific in their own way .
Sometimes i'm in the mood for the straight foward narrative ( as straight foward as a 3 hour film can be ) of the theatrical versions, and sometimes i'm in the mood for deeper characterizations , more action , a bit more gore , or totally new scenes that go just a bit deeper into the world of Middle Earth .
What annoys me just a bit with both x cuts , is that in some instances , i feel certain scenes don't flow as smoothly , or maybe even the music has changes , or a scene was broken up , or even certain sound effects were altered .
Yeah , it's small touches that add up to an effective whole , and some scenes i loved in the theatrical versions have been tweaked ever so slightly , but it was enough to affect my appreciation for them .
Don't want to ramble , but the scene in FOTR when Boromir meets Aragorn for the first time in the standard edition had this tense , foreboding , mysterious aura about it . This scene was perfection for a number of reasons . One , there was no music , only the doomed footfalls of Boromir echoing through the elf museum walls . Two , Aragorn , without saying anything , and because of the way he looked at Boromir , for the first time hinted at who is destined to become . No words were needed , he conveyed that mystique and burden that he carries because of who is a descendent from simply with his expression .
Now , let's just say , in the x cut , music was added at the wrong time , and they exchanged fleeting pleansantries , which to me was totally unnecessary , it ruined an otherwise perfect scene . Not totally mind you , but the original cut was the one that got it right . Plus , you can no longer hear those important , doomed footfalls echoing .
Allright , in the Two Towers , when Gandalph makes his return , his dialogue is changed . "one e stage of your journey is over , another begins . War has come to Rohan , we must travel to Edoras at all speed " . Perfect , and to the point , and it elicits a feeling of anticipation as to what awaits Aragorn , Gimli , Legolas , and also the rest of the fellowship . Now in the x cut , the dialogue is totally changed in that scene , in favor of some nonsensical banter between Gandalph and Gimli , they made him more of a buffoon because of it . Yeah , he's a more lovable lug , i suppose , because of this , but for me , it didn't work .
Come to think of it , FOTR x cut , is the one i have more complaints abouts , if anything , TT : EE flows much better without sacrificing what i loved about the theatrical cut , if anything , maybe they didn't add enough relevant scenes in TT EE , namely the unseen battle between Eomer , Theodres , and the company of orcs . In the x cut , we only see the aftermath , i would have liked to see the actual battle .
Allright , all that's out the way , now i will see both x cuts in the theater , because supposedly this will be the only time they will be relased in the cinmema . Now , it could be a marketing gimmick , and next Christmas , they release all three x cuts again in theaters , but , just in case they never do releaee them again , for me , it's a must to see them on the big screen , it's going to be bonkers , for sure .
The trilogy tuesday thing would have been cool , but the supergeeks , hucksters , and ticket scalpers snathced them all up withing about 15 minutes of them going on sale , so i will have to see them individually .
Just a side note , i have a feeling that more theaters may be added , as a surpise for the Trilogy showings , or maybe there are still some tickets available on Fandango that will go on sale a couple of days before , just a weird feeling . Keep your eyes open for any surpises , if you want a chance to see the special screening of all three films . It's either that , or just shell out the 100 , 200 , 300 duckets some of them are going for , but's that's a little silly .

Surprised that it's opening here on just one Times Square screen, for only three showings a day (11:00, 3:45, 8:30). At an area in the city where Timeline gets three screens and old movies like Seabiscuit are still in first run, it just seems a bit odd - like New Line isn't putting any effort into the rerelease. Anyone seen any advertising?
Wonder how many total screens it's getting around the country.

I'm not sure if it's the same as the Trilogy Tuesday run, which has about 96 cities listed

dell dell,
I just returned from the showing today of FOTR EE at the theater and after reading your post about the meeting of Aragorn and Boromir I watched that scene closely.
And you can hear his footsteps and there is no music during that part, yes they do add in some dialouge but the footstep part is still intact.
I also think they removed the scene were Gandalf reaches over to pick up the ring after Bilbo has left and he glimpses the Eye.
But I am not sure. It just hit me as I was watching it today that I did not remember seeing it, I will have to check my DVD.
But it was great to see it in the theater again, a good turn out, which suprised my wife.
No trailers or commercials either I think it has been over a decade since I have seen a movie with no preamble, just right to it, I liked that a lot.
Can't wait until next week to catch TTT EE I have not see the EE version yet as I knew it was coming to the theater and wanted to wait.
