View Full Version : 1. The Godfather Parts 1 & 2

I want to punch in the face, everyone who puts "The Godfather Parts 1 & 2" on their top ten list as one movie. They are two, and it doesn't matter how much of your "Godfather Saga" you throw in my face. Two separate theatrical releases. Two video releases. Two years of release. Two movies. "Kill Bill" is two movies. "The Lord of the Rings" is three movies. "The Matrix" is three movies. "The Godfather" is three movies.

My top 15 has them as two movies. Will I be spared your wrath?

I agree 100%.
Although they can be enjoyed when viewed all together as one big spectacle, they are, nevertheless, separate films and should always be considered as such.

As much as I'm risking the mighty wrath of my dear Annie Hall, I gotta agree. Putting a series as one movie never made sense to me, whether it be Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill, Matrix, Anal Gangbangs, etc. If you're gonna put the Godfather series as #1, include the 3rd movie or not at all. Or even when it's not even a series, when someone puts 2 movies as being ties for a certain place in their top 10, that also irritates the hell out of me. It's just cheating

Well, although they are separate on my list, it doesn't bother me when people group them together. It's their list, let them do what they want. And if you're bothered by it, just pretend it's a tie, like if someone put "Seven Samurai" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (just 2 random movies) in the same position because they like them just as much. Or does that bother you too?
Annie Hall

It seems I'm very famous for this...but...let me get my peace in...
I try not to put ties in my top 10, like, Say Anything... & Dr. Strangelove. They have no connection, even though I may like them just as much, so I give them different spots. However, when there are two movies that are in the same series, that are just as good, that are the tiniest smallest form of measurement from being EXACTLY on par...why take up two spaces in your top 10 for them? I can't help but feel that it's wasting precious top 10 space to have it look like this
1. Trainspotting
2. LOTR: FOTR
3. LOTR: TTT
4. Butch Cassidy
5. The Godfather Part II
6. The Godfather Part I
I like them THE SAME. I think lists in general, while a ball to make, really mean nothing...and if I like two movies IN THE SAME SERIES, I have the damn right to place them as a tie. What does one do, when they like them equally? Arbitrarily choose because people are "annoyed" by me liking them the same? I can only chose 10 movies to be in my top 10...I have movies that are a part of one big story, despite the fact that they are released at different times (this particularly goes for LOTR) why not put them together?
I'm not putting When Harry Met Sally and Requiem for a Dream as a "tie"...I'm taking two movies that tell the continuing story of the same character that I can't choose between...and saying I like both in the series equally. If I DIDN'T like them equally, I would put them in separate places. I can't make this not bother you, but, the fact that people like two, three, nineteen movies in a series the same amount is really not a big deal.
I'm not saying that they're the same movie...I'm not saying that the Godfather movies were written together and were not released in different years. But the fact of the matter is, they are ABOUT as close to being a single movie as any two movies can be...so liking them equally and saying so is really not that much of a crime.
There you go...like it or not...
If it makes you feel better, you can also view them as being "interchangeable"...from now on I'll put a little * next to the ONE listing and say at the bottom "interchangeable on a day to day basis"

A top ten is a top ten is a top ten is a top ten, not eleven, not twelve, not forty, because you couldn't decide which of the "Back to the Future" movies should tie with the 2000 version of "Shaft" for third place. Ten is ten.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
Nine.
Ten.
Can't decide which you like best? Chronological or alphabetical (by lead actor, director, writer, producer, studio, title) orders work just fine.
Ten is ten is ten.

Fuck killer clowns from outer space, eh?
This was a nice rant. At first I thought it was about loathing the Godfather parts 1 and 2, but I'm quite pleased with the turnout. Without the Godfather, 1972 would have belonged to the shittiest film of all time, Cabaret.

This just shows you entirely misunderstood me. A top 10 is just a pointless gathering of films that you say are your favorites. Out of courtesy to the basic "top 10 rule" I don't tie Back to the Future III with Shaft (2000) because they are entirely different. I think if you CAN'T choose between Back to the Future I or II, you might as well make them a tie. They tell the same story.
This is truly pointless, though, don't like how I make my top 10s? Don't read em.

Yeah, I mean top 10's are fun to write if you're bored, and are good to help get to know yer fellow schmoe, but you cannot look into them too deeply; ultmately they are meaningless. Look at 4 of my favourites: Fight Club, Metropolis, LOTR: FOTR and Rashomon. How can you decide which of those is best? You can't. They are too different to compare.
I disagree with this rant. A top ten is a top ten? Well, yeah. It's my top ten! I'll do whatever the hell I want with it. Trilogies. Quadrilogies. Shit. I'll slap EIGHT movies together and place them at #5 if I want. Who the fuck cares? Are these rules written in stone somewhere?!
NOTE: In case someone misinterprets this post. It's not directed at any schmoe in particular.

Nope, I'm siding with Randythetool on this one, I don't think you guys understood what his rant was about...
He wasn't bitching about people who tie two movies together on their top ten list, he's bitching about people who say that 2 or 3 films of a series (Godfather, Star Wars, Harry Potter) are ONE MOVIE, just because they are (sometimes) a continuation. They're not, they are seperate entities and seperate stories.
Here's my top ten:
1. Fight Club
2. The LOTR films
3. Jaws
4. Citizen Kane
5. The Godfather trilogy
6. Gigli
7. Star Wars movies
etc. etc. You get my point?
It's plain and simply cheating (you sly motherfuckers), and we will not stand for it. I second his motion to punch people in the head to do this, but I also suggest punching in the head people who don't. That way I get to punch as many people as I want :)
Oh, I get it. I just don't agree with it. If I consider two or three movies as one single film, how is that cheating? Who am I cheating exactly? What does it matter? This is all really silly. Punch in the face indeed.

I understood just fine...I still disagree with the mighty force of one of those really short chicks who hits really hard (not me on either counts). I don't mean to bother you all with how I format my top 10, but, it is how I do it, isn't it?
You can punch me all you want, I will never back down!

This is all just silliness anyhow...how about a "boycott this movie" thread to boot?

A Top Ten list is supposed to be, while ultimately pointless, an exclusive quantification. If your Top Ten list contains eight series in the three through ten spots, it doesn't exactly make number one and two stand out as "your favorite movies." And what about individual movies in the series?
If my Top Ten looked like
1. Annie Hall
2. Singin' in the Rain
3. The Godfather, Parts I-III
4. Kieslowski's Trois Coulours
5. Leone's Man With No Name Trilogy
6. The Matrix Trilogy
7. Star Wars Saga
8. Star Trek Films
9. Indiana Jones Trilogy
10. Back to the Future Trilogy
That would be pretty stupid wouldn't it? You'll say "no" now, but in the event of an actual occurrence, I guarantee there'd be at least five or six people who say "That's not a Top Ten, it's a top 35, dumbass," and I'd look like an idiot.
It's supposed to be an exclusive list, and when you use series to cheat a shitload of movies in there, it's just ridiculous.
Sure, lists are pointless, but so are these forums, movies, and more than ninety percent of the other rants featured here.
Ten is ten.

Lists made by Schmoes are just for fun, so who the hell cares how they do them? I certainly don't.

Being another schmoe who puts both in the same spot, I'm being prepared for you to punch me. Come on, my face is made of rock, you know.
Anyway, I see what you mean. Two different movies. But on difference. My list. My rules. My say. I say I like them the same. I like them the same. Punch me all you want. My list. My rules. My say. I can't choose between the two, actually. Is that a crime? No. Will I ever choose between the two? Possibly. Will I right now? No.
You can also argue that they're one story, so they SHOULD be tied. Sure, two seperate films. Two seperate tapes. Two seperate DVDs. Two Seperate Laserdics. Whatever. Same story. Same story counts as one, if you ask me. When 'Kill Bill: Volume Deux' comes out, I may like one more than the other for certain reasons, but in the end, they'll probably be titled on my top 30, 'Kill Bill'. Same story, you see?
The only time I would seperate them if I don't like them the same. Take the 'Fistful' trilogy, I like 'GBU' more than 'FFOD'. A lot more. Plus, they're not the same story. If I like one A LOT more than the other, then ok, I see your point. But...
My list. My rules. My say.
Now excuse me, I say good evening....

I guess I can see where Randy is coming from. If you're asked to pick your favorite 10 movies, that's it. Ten movies.
For instance, if you were told you were going to be stuck on a desert island, powered with coconut electricity that would only work for your DVD player and television set, and you could only choose TEN movies, what TEN would you choose?
You wouldn't be allowed to say:
1.) Back to the future 1-3
2.) Star Wars Ep. 4-6
3.) Indiana Jones trilogy
4.) Matrix Trilogy
5.) Friday the 13th 1-Fvs.J
6.) NOES 1-Fvs.J
7.) The Stanley Kubrick Collection
8.) NOTLD, Dawn and Day of the Dead
9.) John Carpenter's Apocalypse trilogy
10.) Bad Boys 1 & 2
That's somewhere around 40 films. You were only asked about 10 movies.
Sure, Godfather's 1-3 are ONE story, but the question wasn't "What is your favorite movie stories", it was, "What are your 10 favorite films?" And by films, they are individualistic.
I can also understand the element of "ties" between a certain trilogy and not being able to choose between them. But if the conversation is about ten favorites, then ten is what is expected.
Annie Hall
12-03-2003, 12:29 PM
I just think there's a big difference between having one or two tied movies within a series in your top 10, and having an entire top 10 of trilogies tied to make 40.
blankpage
12-03-2003, 09:26 PM
But in fact, there aren't any rules when posting your favourites list. If you have more than 10 favourites, is that crime? Throw me away with Jacko. Your favourite movies are your favourite movies, whether they're tied or not. I can understand 40 in ten spots, but still, if you tie two movies once, I don't think it's a big deal. But really, this is all irrelevant, there aren't any rules when listing your favourites. If so, arrest me and throw away the key.

My question is: why does it have to be 10? Or 5? Or 20? Or 100?
This has always boggled me. I suppose thats why I have resorted to making up my own number system. not to mention my own system of telling time.
Top 10? Ha. try Top 11-teen . Yeah, thats right. I live by my own rules.

I guess it's just a pet peeve between friends/schmoes. The only reason to bring up your "top ten" is if you were asked for it.
Any other reason, you can do what the hell you wanted to. If it's on your personal website, or journal, or you have made a shrine with trilogies as one film, no one would usually care(except Randy maybe.) But for instance, if a friend asked you your top five, or top ten movies, he expects five or ten.
Just think how suck-ass High Fidelity would of been if John Cusak constantly had ties in his top fives throughout the film.

My last post was merely kidding, as was Dignan, I suspect.
I don't know about your friends, but when I tell them that my top 10 consists of the first two LOTR and the first two Godfathers occupying two spots..they don't say "fuck you, we wanted 10" and then take a baseball bat to my face. Because...it really is NOT that big of a deal...
I'm not saying "My favorite SINGLE movie is Trainspotting tied with American Beauty tied with Taxi Driver tied with Paperhouse...my number TWO movie is The Godfather, Back to the Future and Breakfast at Tiffany's"...I'm saying that on my top 10, that the two Godfathers are interchangeably excellent my mind. Simple as that.
As I said...look at it this way: Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday the Godfather Part II is number 4 on my list and the first is OUT of my top 100. Every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday they switch. Does that make it better? I'm not "cheating" anymore...I'm being indecisive

Ahh, I'm just playing Devil's advocate. If you haven't noticed already, I'm the asshole that's got three movies listed as a favorite.
And the baseball bat thing was figurative. You don't have to describe violence to actually mean it. Sort of like saying "I would kill to see that movie!" I wouldn't really kill someone over it, and I don't think Randy would really take a baseball bat to your face.

Interesting! Wow, the things we rant about..... Ok, its like this- if your Top 10 list looks like this:
1. Being There
2. Brazil
3. The Godfather parts 1 & 2
4. Igby Goes Down
5. JFK
6. Back to the Future Trilogy
7. Dancer in the Dark
8. Howard The Duck
9. The Seventh Seal
10. Bullworth
I'd say first off, you have rather peculiar taste in movies. Secondly, thats not a top 10 list. That list contains 13 movies. You can call it a top 10 list all you want, but that doesnt make it so. You could also wear a 50/50 cotton/poly sweater, and tell people that its made of wool, but that wont make it so. You can tell people you drive a Chevy Mustang, and that there are actually 49 stars on the American flag, but that wont make it so either. Does it matter? Not to me.... it sure doesnt piss me off. But it is in fact, NOT a list that contains 10 movies. If you care about appeasing easily annoyed people on these boards, might I suggest the following.... make your list look like this:
1. Being There
2. Brazil
3, 4 (tie). The Godfather parts 1 & 2
5. Igby Goes Down
6. JFK
7, 8, 9 (tie). Back to the Future Trilogy
10. Dancer in the Dark
No one can deny thats a top 10 list. The movies that you love equally (such as The Godfather 1 & 2), are each entered as ties, in the third and fourth spots. Unfortunately though, Howard the Duck didnt quite make your top 10......
Annie Hall
12-05-2003, 04:50 PM

3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
4. The Godfather Part II*
5. American Beauty
6. Annie Hall
7. Moulin Rouge!
8. Say Anything...
9. Dr. Strangelove
