To my knowledge there was one but didn't work out. :(

There was one, but the schmoes here screwed over their chances of ever having one again with it. It sounds great at first, but as soon as it's put down, schmoes post stuff that abuses it.

There was one before, but things seriously got out of hand and it was removed.

Unless we have a stricter one, not happening any time soon.

I think that given the new crackdown about the rules, an 'off topic' forum wouldn't be a bad idea. That way the mods can just fire any thread that is going off topic into that forum instead of closing it. There really wouldn't be much moderation required for it, seeing as off topic is the point. And besides, I'm sure a schmoe would be more than willing to take that job, so Jo and the rest of the staff wouldn't even have to deal with it....

I think that the board has been established as 'movie talk only' for long enough now that you wouldn't really have a problem with people not talking about movies anymore...that's why they come here!

Anyone else want to see this?

Within this sentence is the reason why I disagree. Read it through carefully.

Sorry I don't get it. If you're referring to the fact that the moderators have to move threads, then isn't that just the same as closing them, as they do now?

:p

I was around when we had the old MISCELLANEOUS TALK forum. And it just went haywire -- because when you can talk about "off-topic" stuff, basically anything you want, the stuff just tends to go into personal stuff, Schmoes whining about their girlfriend who left 'em, threads like FAVORITE HAIRCUT? getting 150 replies, great long political debates which end with Schmoes flinging crap at each other and calling people names...And that's not what we need for this place.

Sure, each and every Schmoe is gonna answer "oh, bullshit, we'll be responsible and post smart stuff", but you all know that's not gonna be the case.

The MISCELLANEOUS TALK forum is dead, and I think it's a good thing. No reason to bring it back. If you wanna chat about everything and anything, we got PMs, a chat room, e-mails, AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger!...

After Seein what Lynn and his Gang of Schmoes talk about in the chatroom I doubt that it would be a good idea to open a Off-topic forum....We've already got sports, Books, Video games, Etc....And let us not forget how easily offended many people are.....Not opening one would save this board, most of all Jo, a big headache........Dig it

They have those free forums all over the internet. Sign up for one and call it Movie Fans Talk Everything But Movies.

Seriously, it might be fun.

I thought about doing a message board/forum on my site but then I thought about all the fuckwads I'd have to ban because they were fuckwads and decided it wasn't that great an idea.

Besides, I link to this forum.

It is illogical that an off-topic board would have threads shut down for going off-topic.

badberry
12-04-2003, 10:49 PM
No no, the off topic board wouldn't have topics shut down for going off topic, the movie board would. Or rather, like I was suggesting, threads in the movie section going off topic could be sent to the off topic forum.

There could be 101 reasons why there should be one but Jo is not gonna bite. But thats just my theory on it.......

It wouldn't be a good idea. Bump the chat thread and go to the chat if you want off-topic schmoe talks.

Misc Forum caused a lot of heated arguments and just pure hatred between the schmoes. The problem was that these personal problems with other schmoes were also taken to movie forums, people were not able to keep the personal talk just on the Misc Forum.

Absolutively posilutely.

Heed the wise words of us Schmoes who were here back when there was an Off-topic board. It does not work well. Everyone stops talking movies and heads off to the off-topic board. And why do we need one? This is a movie board! If you want to talk about your bitchy girlfriend, go elsewhere.

After all, i joined mostly because of their impressive Mulholland Dr Forum, which is still the best source to get the movie in full. That, or the recopilation of all their info, theories, reviews, and other things (not only from RT) that you can find in the box with "www" below this post ;)

Wow, that doesn't surprise me, Lynn.

And I'm glad you migrated, DM, I did, too.

This place is just better. I had been a member of RT for a while and then noticed that there was a huge gap between OFCS members (who posted rarely or in select groups) and the rest of the "pack," as it were.

I left when things got very personal, ugly, and crossed the boundaries of online pissy arguments to serious, ugly, personally abusive attacks.

I go back to read reviews on the main page once in a while but I stopped posting or reading in the forums all together.

The only movie forum I have ever found that resists the urge to open discussions up in a way that ends up destroying the community is this one. The IMDB, where I once in a blue moon post, but probably no more than a dozen times a year, is full of wackos and snotty kids. RT is just a dumpster of human refuse.

Which is why, when people nitpick about the rules here, I feel like smacking them.

Lynn Minmei

I was there when that group of schmoes decided to leave-They wanted me to go also, but I have standards.

Anyways, the main reason why they felt it was okay to leave the site was because of RT's forums. And this came from the mouth of the one who spent most of his time at RT's forums anyways and rarely posted here.

Back in my day........:D I too was around when the Misc. Non. Movie Forum was around, and it is what everyone says: A Nightmare. We had threads like Coke or Pepsi, Who do you Masterbate Too?, and other crap. I do admit, I spent a lot of time in there, bullshitting, and when it closed, I was mad at first, but then it hit me, What the hell were we talking about in there? Nothing. So we are all better off without it.

Ixnay on the off topicay.

Dude.. that is such bullshit... i would totally be responsible in what i post!

But... i used to want one.. because when a big thing happens it is nice to talk about stuff of that nature. Like when Sept 11 happened, you wouldnt be able to talk about it on these boads (im just assuming that be the case) because these were movie only boards.. but a thing like 9/11 warrants a mass conversation to grasp things that you may not have grasped before, getting 101 different views and seeing which one makes most sense. But in the same breath an OT forum wouldnt work because we would have people getting banned for stupid shit, for example if a 9/11 thread existed, i am more than 100% sure at least 1 or 2 of the schmoes would go off on a rant and rave against Middle Easterners. or in the Coke Vs. Pepsi thread, im sure someone was like "anyone who drinks Mountain Dew over Mello Yellow sucks crucial amopunts of cock"!! I like talkin about movies... because it is what i know... but if thre are big events that occur it would be nice to have a place to go and talk about these things!

Friends washing machine... That wouldn't happen to be your friend's mom, would it? And just so y'know... in some parts of the world, that would get you shot.:D

To be honest, if Joblo really wants to clean house around here, all he would have to do is install that Misc. puppy for a month or two. And if he REALLY wants to scorch the Earth, throw in that politics forum that a few folks have been requesting. It'd be like a nice little "Last Schmoe Standing" game for all of us. Winner gets a volleyball named Wilson to discuss film with.

I hear what you are all saying and all I'm hearing is "Blah blah blah im a dirty ho"

just kidding

If you had thatf orum and popel did want to talk abou 9/11 and what not, when their opinions differenciate (not 100% sure n that being an actual word) people will have fights, some people will agree with bush's antics and think he is right, some will say it's un-neccesary, the punks will jump in with "AMERICA IZ DA TERRORISTS!!!!!1!" and all hell would break loose...

I cn make up nother message board specifically for this though, so you can talk about whatever, and don't go under your joblo.com names so if you do get in any fights nothing will happen... it would ony be for schmoes though... so it is like movie fans tlaking about anything...

if joblo will let me then ill post a link later on, if not, well i just won't make one then will i

Sometimes I think yeah it might be cool to have an off topic forum them I remember why I came here in the first place, which was to talk about movies in a respectful environment.

Jo has been generous in adding other media forums (A certain someone was the one who suggested having a TV Forum at the right time :) ) but he has never strayed far from the purpose of these boards.

My personal life is just that, personal. I come here to get away from all the crap of everyday life and discuss something with others that my friends couldn't care less about- movies. If on occassion I feel like sharing I click the link to the Chatroom.
Just my two cents.

This is EXACTLY one of the reasons why we don't ever want to bring back a NON-MOVIE TALK forum. Things just get "gossipy" and that's not what our board is about. There are plenty of other movie forums that DO allow it though. I believe that it draws PLENTY OF MORE HITS to the site, but we're not interested in just adding hits...we want to keep things focused on MOVIES at all times.

You can read more about why we shut the old one down right here: http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=24405&highlight=misc+nonmovie

Thread closed.
