It had to happen, and it really could not have happened to a better song at a worse time. Gary Jules cover of Mad World - taken from the soundtrack of Donnie Darko - is set to go to the top spot in the UK charts and is the current favourite to be the Christmas number one with odds of 4/1. One of the finest covers, and certainly the best use of music in a movie in the last two years, I cannot help but think the appeal of the song will somehow be reduced by its release. Anyone else think it should have been left where it belongs, or do you imagine that getting the song out to a wider audience is no less than it deserves? I personally think the song should have been left to be discovered by people who watch the movie - not that I am being elitist (well, maybe a bit), but rather it had that aura of being 'found' as part of an experience, instead of being pushed into the public via Christmas marketing: the worst kind of record marketing there is. Any thoughts?

Well I love the song and since I pay less than zero attention to the charts, never listen to the radio, and only rarely watch music TV because it is bad beyond belief, I doubt this will adversely affect my opinion of the song. At least there'll be a decent song at number one at Christmas for the first time since The Pogues And Kisty MacColl graced the top spot with Fairytale Of New York.

Favourite my arse.

Can't see it beating 'The Idol's' meself...but hey, maybe I'm just being CYNICAL.

Fuck Pop Idol...the sham that it is. Give Sam and the fat bint a trophy already and get it done with. Yeah, I'm not bitter about Chris biting the dust like, not at all pissed that the judges choice (White bastard Crimbo) RUINED him last night...despite the fact that his Winter Wonderland pissed on everything else.

Mark should be on his knee's thanking the big JC...Jesus.

Bollocks...I tell ya. Bollocks.

Forgive my going off on a tangent but I don't half get reeled in by this Pop Idol malarkey...;)

Oh, and back to Jules and Mad World.

Yeah, this release doesn't 'feel' right...if that makes sense.

I completely get what yer saying Kaufman.

Brilliant post Reigh I agree 100%.

Does anybody know why its took nearly three years to be released anyway? I don't know why its being released at Christmas time especially with the suicide rate being highest this time of year? As long as those Pop Idol brats aren't Number One I'll be happy. None of them have any talent and the video was just plain cheese. :(

"Mad World" is a great song by the way.

Why is it going to number one? Was it just released on CD or somethin'?

Anyways, yes, it is one of the few modern songs I'll admit that I enjoy. That's pretty much the biggest compliment you can get from me about recnt music.

i love this cover version i loved it the first time i heard it in the movie and still love it now,but i cannot for the life of me understand why it has took 3 years for it to be released,i was talking about this in work tonight when it came onto the radio it is not a christmas record so i cannot see why it has been held back to target the xmas buying shoppers,it would have been very apt when the war was going on but now is a mystery.
