I was going to submit this link within the Top 100 of the 90's thread, in response to Grebdron's (sic?) reply that all his best stuff was in eighties. But it is a BIG list, with more expert writing and careful selection, so I thought it deserved it's own thread and line of discussion.
Well, here it is Pitchforks Top 100 of the 80's

A very quality top ten... comments?

I looove that site. They have the best taste I have ever seen form a music related review site. I really like the addition of the David Byrne Brian Eno record. It deserves its placement on there.

That is a brilliant list. I like it even better than the 90s one.
THe whole time I was reading it down from 100 to 1, I was thinking.. either Pixies or Sonic Youth should be at the top. And I thought that was just wishful thinking, but I was right.
My favorites:
Cocteau Twins - Treasure (98)
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking (90)
Meat Puppets - Up On The Sun (72)
GnR - Appetite for Destruction (59)
Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom (58)
Pixies - Come on Pilgrim (57)
King Crimson - Discipline (56)
R.E.M. - Document (48)
Kraftwerk - Computer World (44)
The Cure - Disintegration (38)
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (36)
Sonic Youth - EVOL (31)
U2 - The Joshua Tree (30)
Sonic Youth - Sister (14)
Joy Division - Closer (10)
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (8)
Pixies - Surfer Rosa (7)
R.E.M. - Murmur (5)
Pixies - Doolittle (4)
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (1)
"Teen Age Riot" is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Yawn, no Metallica...and as far as I'm concerned they cranked out some of the best records of the 80's.
Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, ...And Justice For All are my 3 faves.
But not everyone will be pleased by every list, and I still have never seen a list that really applies to my tastes is as versatile a way as I like my music. Every genre has something good to offer!

Great list, and I REALLY need to familiarise myself with more SONIC YOUTH (I've managed to download quite a bit, but a shopping spree is on the cards).
I swear I've missed out there.
Standout Choices...
98: Cocteau Twins - Treasure
92: Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
77: The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come
51: Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
45: Prince - Sign 'O' The Times
44: Kraftwerk - Computer World
39: The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
38: The Cure - Disintegration
33: The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour
30: U2 - The Joshua Tree
28: New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
13: The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
12: Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain
10: Joy Division - Closer
8: Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
6: The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
4: Pixies - Doolittle
Not to mention R.E.M and their many mention's.

NO Metal albums? In a list of the 80s, of all decades? Get the fuck out of here. To half-quote them: any 80s list without metal is kidding itself.

They really should have called this the top 100 Best Alternative Albums of the 80's because outside of a couple like Purple Rain, Appitite For Destruction, and Thriller most of them would qualify for alterna. The fact that their is no Metallica or Maiden is pretty sickening. I also wish 1984 was on that list.

You really can't go wrong with the post-college boys of Pitchfork. Good taste and quality, well expressed reviews.

They're fucking high.
I consider myself a fairly knowledgable person in re: 80's music, and there are quite a few bands I haven't even heard of on there.
Some of the things that struck me...
X, Paul Simon and Guns 'n Roses should have been MUCH higher.
Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique is top 10, but License to Ill is in the 60's somewhere?
Fucking bollocks.
