With the star power of Russell Crowe and the impressive praising reviews, it was no surprise that Peter Weir's big budget epic MASTER AND COMMANDER would take the top spot away from S.W.A.T. this weekend. Opening with an impressive $3,078,560 (US $32,968,497), it didn't open as large as Gladiator ($5,927,458), but beat out his Beautiful Mind ($3,009,995). Colin Farrell's police force tactics dropped off 46% in its second week with $1,489,734, taking the action flicks two week total to $5,187,153 (US $55,549,555). Will Ferrell continued to pull in audiences this past weekend with his family comedy ELF rising 11% and adding a further $1,163,416 to its name. The James Caan accompanied comedy has racked up $3,220,287 (US $34,486,260). Jack Black's SCHOOL OF ROCK is also maintaining audience interest. Only dropping 23% in its 3rd national week of release, the comedy flick has collected $5,812,306 (US $62,244,358). Still holding on to the Top 5 after 5 weeks is sci-fi sequel THE MATRIX: REVOLUTIONS, which dropped a further 39%. Though faring worse than its predecessor, the hit flick has still racked up an impressive $17,038,820 (US $182,469,819). Low budget horror flick CABIN FEVER, which has been surprisingly well recieved by the critics down here, managed a #8 placing on its first week in with $298,117 (US $3,192,554). Tobey Maguire's horse racing woes dropped of 45% in its 4th week of release with SEABISCUIT down 2 places and losing 12 screens. It's cumulative total so far sits at an impressive $2,997,524 (US $32,100,677). Poorly recieved kiddie feature GOOD BOY dropped out of the Top 10 in its second week of release, but only down one spot and off 9%. This week it scored $164,472, taking its total to $399,089 (US $4,273,869). I don't think we have to worry about it outgrossing INTOLERABLE CRUELTY like it did in the US. R rated rauncher IN THE CUT continues to perform well with the Meg Ryan vehicle averaging better than the likes of Seabiscuit and The Matrix, despite only a 55 screen count. After 4 weeks it has taken in a healthy $1,343,657 (US $14,389,309). Despite being a documentary about a spelling competition, SPELLBOUND still managed to add $81,971 to its total, taking it to $523,948 (US $5,610,992). George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones's game of love and deception fell a staggering 68% in its 7th week of release, but will go out with an impressive $8,147,236 (US $87,249,274). Also going out with style is Quentin Tarantino's hyper gory KILL BILL, which drops down a further 41% in its 8th week. The Uma Thurman starrer has splattered up $7,869,143 (US $84,271,158). Rounding off the charts this week is the Kate Hudson/Naomi Watts dramedy LE DIVORCE which took in $41,806, taking the Parisian style romance to a 5 week total of $892,511 (US $9,557,957).
THIS WEEK (December 11th): Another month, another sequel. This week it's in the form of comedy spoof SCARY MOVIE 3. The Anna Faris/Charlie Sheen vehicle opens opposite family friendly comedy LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION featuring Steve Martin, Jenna Elfman and Brendan Fraser. Also on hand is (unnessecary) comedy prequel DUMB AND DUMBERER:WHEN HARRY MET LOYD with Eugene Levy and Cheri Oteri.

Both of the previous Scary Movie films went to number 1 in their respective debut weekends, and I expect Scary Movie 3 to continue the tradition. The film has been publicised well, and it's competition isn't going to be much of a threat.
