It's that time of year where the publications wheel out their top choices for the year just past (or passing for those who like to get out early) and it's certainly easy enough to focus on the best, but what about the sewage of the year?

The Onion's AVClub have already done it with the Least Essential Albums of 2003 already out... Least Essential Solo Album? One of the guys out of Insane Clown Posse went solo, apparently. Least Essential Tribute? Mr. Reed's wanky literature lesson on Poe. Check out the list it's foonny.

But what did you find dire in 2003's aural landscape?

Top nomination Britney Spear's Me Against The Music.. that's right, you are against the music, because that faux lesbian beat mess was better defined as turd than music.

And whose idea was the Ketchup Song exactly?

Can I just say most of 2003 was bad? kkthx.

Yeah, even in America, the Ketchup Song couldn't "catch" on.

I have to disagree completely. This year has been a great year for music. One of the best.

I second that. Great year...you've just gotta bother yer arse and look past the mainstream shite.

Contrary to popular belief...the 60's and 70's had their fair share of WANKY stuff too...

Bay City Rollers anyone?

Anyway, that Randy Savage album looks like a keeper.

Shitest 'tune' of '03 goes to...

Daniel Beddingfield - If You're Not The One

Poor Australia, the year Charlie's Angels 2 was one of our top box office films and the Ketchup Song rose to number one on the charts. Both, as I now have to come to terms with, were rejected by the Americans. We really weren't showing our best cultural sensibilities.

I agree that 2003 was pretty tops - a return to form for Basement Jaxx, the dizzy rise of Dizee, Sir Malkmus returns, everyone learns about The Shins - but that doesn't mean we can't have a good old laugh at all the shite.

That one Holiday inn song. If I hear that one more time I'm going to rip my ear drums out.

That would be my pick. I wouldn't even give them the title of 'music', they were more like the worst publicity stunt or something.

I think I'm the only member on here with balls big enough to buy it and it is really funny. Just hearing a 50 year old man rapping about how he is the Ol' G of the wrestling world cracks me up. Even his tribute song to Curt Henning made me laugh because of the opening where he dedicates the song to him. It doesn't sound funny, but I guess you have to hear it. Plus he has the perfect heavy metal voice, he should do that next. Hell, Macho Man maybe the best rapper ever, second to only Joe Pesci himself.:D

I disagree wholeheartedly on this account simply because of albums from QOTSA, Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Pepperf from 2002...each of their albums is arguably their best work. Plus Weezer had Maladroit which I enjoyed immensely

50 Cent tops the worst list for me. I tell ya, I've heard his songs about 'fity' times. Sometimes it makes me want to have NO social life what-so-ever.

My second pick is Sean Paul. Two words: Grammar School.

Mandy by Westlife winning the best single of the year was so monumentally fucking preposterous a crime against humanity that each and every one of the individuals who voted should be tracked down and beaten senseless with a variety of blunt objects. It's things like this that make me pray that the apocalypse is right around the corner.

LEAST ESSENTIAL TRIBUTE ALBUM

Various Artists
The Acoustic Coffee House Presents: A Female Tribute To Creed (Buy It!)
As someone named Bill Lefler strums away on an acoustic guitar with the care and cautious tempo of a first-year student, a parade of emotion-drained, seemingly identical singers with names like "Marmalade" and "Susannah B" work their way through the Creed catalog. Believe it or not, "With Arms Wide Open" and "Higher" can sound worse than they already do.

LOL!! Now that's just plain sad.

Hmmm. I think the worst of 2003 have to be:

First of All Britney Spears: She sucks she Lipsyncs and her music is bubblegum shit.
JC Chazez
Beyonce
Simple Plan
Good Charlotte
Avril Lavigne

I want to hang myself whenever I hear the No Doubt rendition of "It's My Life." It is just grating on my eardrums. Eeeeek.

I also agree with many of the choices in this thread.

Beyonce's album was horrible... (and hell, I kinda like the lady). Worst album that infected my ear drums this year.

Annie Lennox's Bare was a frikkin' snoozefest, couldn't keep my eyes or ears open long enough to get through the entire thing.

Sean Paul and 50 Cent should be run off the face of the planet.

TATU needs to stop making music.... seriously....

A bunch more, but these jump to mind right away.
