Thanks to my parents, I've been introduced to many great bands and artists. Some from the sixties, some from the seventies and eighties. Thanks to them, my taste in music is now somewhat varied when before I used to listen to such pish like Steps and All Saints.

So who have you discovered thanks to Maw and Paw?

Some that my parents have introduced to me (over the years) are:

~David Bowie
~Marc Bolan and T-Rex
~Steely Dan
~Simon And Garfunkle
~Nina Simone
~The Average White Band

I swear the only band my mom likes is The Beatles. It's crazy. My dad has a much broaded range, though, and he's the one who got me into The Who and Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin, The Guess Who, The Who, Ozzy Osbourne LOL, nothing really that funny about that, except that it is a tad different from my list. I literally "laghed out loud" when I saw that and then thought of mine.:D

I remember my old man's record collection he has. I kinda dig his three favorite artists from the old days: Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, and Bing Crosby.

Most of the bands I like:
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Dave Matthews Band
Green Day
The Beatles
REM
Violent Femmes
CCR
Chuck Berry
The Smiths

My parents like similar music to what I like, so it's pretty cool. I've gotten into a lot of classic rock bands because of them. Also, my parents were into alternative/underground music in the 80s (my dad listened to a lot of REM since their first album, and my mom has their first EP, from 1982. They also saw the Smiths live).

My Mom has imparted to me her great knowledge of, and love for, 60's R&B.

Kris Kristofferson.

My dad is a total fanatic, and I love him, too. His voice is shit but every bit of pain he feels is in there. One of the most incredible lyricists ever.

You like Steps?! And I thought you had good taste in music...

I actually own two of their albums. I would be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy them at the time. Hell, I even saw them in concert! But now I just look back and shudder.

Oh, do you know they split up? I never actually knew they were popular in the USA.

Oh, I loathe them...but...they had their heyday in my eyes. They never got popular here, I found the CD in a trip to Britain...I just recall them from when I was 8 or so...ah, the memories.

Glad to hear they broke up, they were actually eevil

Practically ALL the great classic music I listen to my parents influenced me to, like Pink Floyd, Beatles, and others.

I discovered pre-contemporary on my own, though.

Well, had it not been for our parents, we probably wouldn't know about these bands at all. I for opne owe a lot to my mummy and daddy.

And remember, you're as young as you feel and we can't help it if you feel old! :p

More bands/artists:

The Isley Brothers
Ella Fitzgerald
Earth, Wind and Fire
George Benson
Capercallie (old Scottish band)
Hue & Cry (recent Scottish band)

I saw the spangly shiny fuckers in CONCERT!!!

No word of a lie...:o, 'H' belted out all manner of Erasure covers whilst suspended on a glittery wire.

The shame.

Erm, ok...

Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, The Everly Brothers...and that's about it.

I developed a love for Croce, Lightfoot and Johnny Horton* on my own, but my mom (the same woman who loved and still loves R&B) introduced me to Waylon, Willie and the whole Outlaw vibe, too.

*A guy who does songs about the Gold Rush, the Bismarck and the Battle of New Orleans is an ideal singer for a 10 year old to like

This is an appropriate thread to link to a nostalgic article about why music sucks today.

The greatest week in rock history (http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2003/12/19/rock/index.html)

Thirty-four years ago this week, the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Temptations, Santana, Crosby Stills and Nash, and Creedence Clearwater all shared top billing on the Billboard album chart. There's never been another lineup quite like it -- and there will never be again.
